Is clearing RAM still a thing ?

Hey, I just switched from an iPad mini 5 to an iPad air M4 (wow), and I don't know of to clear the RAM. There was a topic about this but I can't find it.
I just need to make sure nothing will go wrong between the soundchecks and the gigs!

  • Well ... there is a way to do it on devices without a home button, but it involves enabling the virtual home button using assistive touch. I wouldn't do it.

Why not just restart the iPad? It takes a little longer, but accomplishes the same thing.

If you're not using any legacy IAA / Standalone apps, and you force-quit all running apps, there's probably not much to worry about. Still, a restart (after force-quitting all apps) is a way to be sure of a clean state.

    @Etienne
No - you won't need that.
    It's not "a thing" anymore.

    For my setup

I use AUM, AUv3 instruments/effects, and hardware controllers, my routine is:

    reboot iPad
    Airplane Mode
    launch AUM
    load the set
    play for 5–10 minutes
don't touch anything else until the performance

That is considerably more reliable than trying to "clear RAM."

    About the M4 Air

The M4 Air has far more RAM and a much faster memory subsystem than the mini 5, so you're much less likely to run into memory pressure. In practice, CPU load, plugin bugs, or audio interface issues are much more common causes of problems than "dirty RAM."

For maximum reliability before a gig, a fresh reboot is still the best practice.

  • Thanks @wim . My Loopy session is quite big, but no IAA. The thing about restarting the ipad is it takes time, when a lot of times the soundcheck must be rushed and every seconds count

  • Alright @waka_x , maybe you and @wim are right about restarting the ipad. Although, I don't mind having a permanent button for assistive touch if I can gain some time

  • "dirty RAM"

    🤣🤣

  • @evenSteven
    dirty and naughty
    :)

  • You can set things up so that the home button is there only when you want it. I think that you can do that with the control center ... or something.

Sorry, I forget the details. I don't think I've messed with this except on devices ... that have a home button. Probably better to research it yourself or get it straight from someone who already knows exactly how to go about it.

I'd show up at the gig with the device already freshly rebooted and not dick around with it after sound check myself.

I understand, but in festivals I usually soundcheck early and play late. So I need to unplug everything, meaning quitting the apps and reloading them before the line check. Thx for your insight, I'll investigate !

    Etienne:
it takes ( my Air M2 ) under one minute to
    boot and load a project.
not having even one minute- sounds like an absurd situation.
the artist is not a machine... so concert starts when artist is ready and feels like startin'
faster - faster - FASTER. this trend will drive (and already did) everybody mad.

Maybe I overestimated the reboot time because my mini 5 was taking an eternity lol.

Agree on the timing but it is what's it is, sometimes I have all the time in the world, sometimes we have to rush because of x or y ahah

Shutting down with slide to power off then powering up makes certain kinds of strange audio/midi problems far less likely to happen for reasons I don’t understand.

Some weird issues go away (or are prevented from happening) after power-cycle that don’t go away when force-quitting.

I recommend a rebooting from being truly off before any gig.

My 13” Air M2 took 38 seconds to reboot from start to finish 👍

FWIW, my Mini 5 takes less than 60 seconds total to (1) slide shutdown slider, (2) wait 20 seconds, (3) hold power button to initiate restart, (4) enter unlock code and arrive at desktop. It's running iPadOS 26.5.

  • I though the restart by pressing…

    1. Volume Up
    2. Golume Down
    3. Holding power button down, wait until power off screen goes away
    4. Device restarts

Clears some ram, no..? Just curious.

There is a shut down action on Shortcut app, i put the icon on the home page and you can choose to restart the iPad. Two taps and you are ready to go.

That's just a way to force a reboot if the device is locked up. It may do a "deeper" boot, but I'm not sure about that.

There also a shutdown icon at the top-right of the control center (in OS 26 at least). Swipe down and one long press. That's handy for accessing anywhere without having to navigate to the Home Screen.

  • Thank you all. I'll definitely restart instead of clearing the "dirty" ram.

I've made a 1 step "reboot" shortcut since I'm too lazy to do it in 2 steps (turn off -> turn on) :

    1/
    Settings - Accessibility - Touch - AssistiveTouch - Custom Actions - Single-Tap : Restart
    2/
    Shortcut App : New Shortcut

    • Turn AssistiveTouch On
    • Wait 3 seconds
    • Turn AssistiveTouch Off

I didn’t knew this, thanks for the tip.
