Decades old and still alive - which synths have ‘made it’

A thing occurs to me lately, there’s still a stream of new synths just as there always was, but if you look at what has been released about a decade ago, 15 years ago, 20 years ago or more, it’s actually interesting which one just got buried, nobody has heard of them today, and conversely, which ones are truly just as alive today as they were a decade or two ago when they came out, and are popularly still being sold new as well as secondhand.

In terms of hardware boxes, which synths would you recognise as being in effect, in spirit, a ‘current’ synth, even though it might be a decade or two old?

Which ones disappeared without trace?

It’s an interesting perspective, because some of the older ‘winners’ that have stood the test of time are also less expensive than they were back then (not always). Why restrict yourself to the latest synths?

    An obvious one to start off with is of course the Novation BassStation II

    I’ve never had a Volca but I believe they’re just as popular now as they were on release (although a few have moved on to a ‘V2’ revision)

    On the flipside, I predict that the West Pest and East Beast will not become ‘classics’, they’ll disappear from the ‘public’ consciousness within some years and won’t be re-stocked

    Similarly, the IK UNO series of synths are now seen as ‘old’ and aren’t talked about much any more, or seen much in retailer’s lists.

    I predict Korg’s OpSix (any of them) and the Multi/Poly will become long-term classics, whereas the Wavestate and Modwave not so much.

    MicroKorg (mk1) is an obvious one. 24 years and still available.

    Yeah, this was my first thought. It's had a refresh recently, but I don't think much changed.

    The latest Electribes have been about for quite a while now. They didn't get a lot of love compared to the earlier ESX & EMX, but they are still selling, still well-used, if not universally loved.

    Every Friday on Top Of The Pops recently (it was 1999 until a few weeks ago) there’s often an act with Kawai K5000-related gear, and I keep posting (we post on the fediverse while we watch #TOTP hashtag) that the Kawai additive synths were really underrated. I think it was a case of those that know, know.

    I suppose Virsyn’s Addictive Pro is a bit of that.

    Not everyone's cup of tea, but the 0-Coast is exactly a decade old now. It's still a great "best of" collection of modules, which many regard as a gateway into Eurorack but I think of it as "this all the hardware modular I need".

    +1 to this. minifreak and Opsix I think are some of the recent stone-cold classics.

    Also I don’t have any experience with it, other than watching a couple of vids, but I predict the Moog Messenger will be the classic of classics, and possibly will be the one remembered given a few generations, maybe grandchildren will not remember the Minimoog or if they do question why it’s so important, but the Messenger will last (maybe turning into variants that are eg strongly built, or larger keyboard length, or rackmount, etc)
