Load Loopy project from Songbook Pro?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone has already solved this.

My live setup is:

  • iPhone: Songbook Pro (lyrics and set lists)
  • iPad: Loopy Pro (performance engine)
  • APC40 MkII
  • Morningstar MC8
  • MOTU M4
  • Pop Drummer AUv3

My goal is to keep Songbook Pro on the iPhone and Loopy Pro on the iPad. I don’t want Songbook on the iPad because Loopy is my live instrument and I want the entire iPad dedicated to it.

I’d like selecting a song in Songbook Pro to automatically load the corresponding Loopy project on the iPad.

From what I’ve read, Songbook Pro can send MIDI events when a song is opened, and Loopy can load projects from incoming MIDI using a Global Control Profile.

However, I haven’t been able to establish a MIDI connection between the two devices.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • USB through a powered hub (the iPhone charges but never appears as a MIDI device in Loopy)
  • Regular Bluetooth pairing
  • Loopy’s Bluetooth MIDI browser (the iPhone never appears)
  • Network Session 1
  • I’d prefer not to use midimttr or another MIDI routing utility if possible.

My questions are:

  1. Is this configuration (Songbook Pro on an iPhone controlling Loopy Pro on an iPad) officially supported?
  2. If so, what is the recommended transport method?
    • Bluetooth MIDI?
    • Network MIDI?
    • Something else?
  3. If it isn’t supported, what architecture would you recommend for someone who wants to keep lyrics and set lists on an iPhone while using the iPad exclusively for Loopy?

The reason I’m pursuing this is that I’d like to be able to reorder songs in Songbook Pro before a performance and then simply tap the next song to have Loopy load the corresponding project automatically.

    Hi. Bluetooth MIDI ought to work, but you will need to run a connection dialog on the iPhone, as well as on the iPad. If Songbook Pro does not do this, you might be able to route the MIDI through something like AUM, which does. The pic shows the AUM dialog; basically, one side needs to advertise, then the other side can connect.

    The free midimittr app is all that is needed to advertise the iPhone. (Since OP has Loopy Pro, it could also be used for doing the advertising but that seems like overkill).

    The details of how to set it all up depends on how songbook pro is set up.

    @Mtumney: for Bluetooth, use midimittr to advertise the iPhone as a Bluetooth midi device. Don’t use regular Bluetooth pairing. Once you advertise the iPhone, loopy pro’s Bluetooth midi panel will show the iPhone as an available midi device you can connect to.
