WAIL - Expressive feedback synthesiser - Testers needed
Hello, I'm Ant, long time lurker here looking for some testers on a feedback synth I've developed. A bit nervous to show something I've worked so hard on so be gentle please!
WAIL is a feedback synthesiser for live playing on the iPad interface (works on iPhone too). No oscillators, just two signals of delay fighting against modulation. The apps 12 parameters are played by moving 3 knobs and 4 xy pads around (work that out)
Video here gives a good sound test
As you'll see and hear its wild, very loud and harsh, but controlled chaos. Very industrial and won't be for everyone for sure. I've deliberately left the XY pads unlabelled, I want it to feel like its own instrument, users get to experience the sounds and figure out for themselves. I'm also purposely putting no presets on it (although there is a portable save state feature so you can save your own)
It creates Rumbling bass through to fizzing high pitch noise at the swipe of a finger (or four). A formant filter hidden in there can give some fuzzy harmonies or screams from the pits of hell. It can be left creating textures in the background or played as a lead instrument.
Standalone and AUV3, I've tested in AUM through many FX and just cannot get enough of it. I can see uses for it in all genres of music, cinematic scoring, soundscapes, sound effects etc. I'm currently recording some performance videos with other developers AUV3s to showcase it.
For a bit of background, amongst various other things I run a niche DIY electronic music label called NOIDED, releasing underground electronic acts on short run physical media. I'm using NOIDED to brand the apps, keeping to the underground and DIY ethic and aesthetic of it all. The UI elements are made up mostly of photos I've taken myself around local industrial areas in my home town of Rochdale, England.
I'm a longtime iOS twiddler and developed the app for a live act that I'll performing as later in the year, hopefully with 1 pad and one midi controller. There's 3 further instruments in the series that will follow this shortly. The apps aren't fancy, purposefully nuts and bolts-simple controls (literally). I've had them in development for nearly a year now and I'm really happy to be sharing them finally.
Anyway enough blah, beta test link below - I'm particularly looking for feedback on midi functions, automation etc. It's not something I do a lot of in my practice to looking for help from the community. Logic / Cubase / Garageband folks and whatever else feedback please. I run it on an old ipad 4 and it max's the DSP out in AUM on it's own but doesn't on my iPhone 12pro max with other FX, so i'm looking for memory performance please. I've noticed problems with Koala now getting the sound so that's on the list already. Any other bugs I'd be grateful to find out about, plus your thoughts on the app in general. Hoping to get a little testing team together to work out the niggles in the other apps also.

I like this a lot @NOIDEDANT. Can pitch only be controlled by the dial though? It doesn’t seem to accept MIDI notes in?
Looks interesting but what else would you expect from the birthplace of the Co-Op, Gracie Fields and (almost) Lisa Stansfield 👍
Just over the hill in Saddleworth 😊
Wouldn't mind joining in but the beta is full @NOIDEDANT
This is right up my alley! If any beta spots open please message me. 😎✌🏼
Hey thanks, glad you like it. Are you trying by keyboard? It's not built for keyboard tracking, pitch is knob / automation only at the minute.
Ey up lad awa th'ill!
And yes, although I always point to Autechre rather than Lisa Standfield for the towns respectable musical lineage.
just added another 15 slots, be quick
just added another 15 slots
Audrey meets Lyra. Love it.
I’d be interested in the dates and locations of your shows as well.
@Philandering_Bastard thanks! And yeah thanks, might change your mind when you hear it ha! But it’ll be north west EMOM nights to start with in Sept . I’ll be active on the group here going forward .
I LOVE THIS
Super cool!
Thank you!
Great stuff, only loaded it on iPhone standalone and in AUM but works perfectly from what I can gather. A portrait layout would be great for phones btw, but usable as is (on a max sized phone anyway)
Also nearby btw, bridge over Hebden water here, but a Darren lad originally so not one of those glum Yorkshire types😂
Thanks for clarifying @NOIDEDANT. I’d suggest that an optional MIDI input/keyboard tracking mode would be an obvious addition then.
Got it! Thanks. It’s great! ✌🏼😎
Would love to be added if possible.

Appreciate the kind words and feedback so far. I’ve made improvements based on some of what’s come back, about to upload a fresh release. Has anyone used it in a DAW other than AUM at all? Logic , Cubase etc? Can someone check audio output, crashes, dsp or anything please.
Ey nice one local(ish), glad you like it
Darwin or Darren @Krupa ?
Just tried a quick load in GarageBand and AudioBus 3 @NOIDEDANT and it loads fine, no crashes but after that I don’t know enough about either to test anything else ☹️
I played with it a bit in the latest Logic Pro version without issues. I’ll try it a bit more. Also having the app respond to midi input would be very helpful.
Darwen 😅
Seems to be OK in Cubasis…
Correction: automation curves are not working at all in Logic Pro. They are completely ignored.
Welcome @NOIDEDANT
Congratulations on the work so far.
@Poppadocrock thanks, much appreciated.
Thanks for all the help so far folks, just booted everyone from the public link because i'm not really sure what i'm doing here ha sorry. Latest build is on now on the public link with 20 slots available. I'm getting it ready to release now so appreciate any installers have a good play today / tomorrow and come back to me with any feedback.

This already has no slots even though you posted it only 5 mins ago! I doubt 20 people have joined in 5 mins at this time of day haha, so maybe there's another problem?
Good spot, I hadn't added the build! As I said not a clue ha, learning as I go though. Should be there now thanks
