Best MIDI connection
I've seen threads about audio interfaces and guitar connections, but what's the best way to connect a MIDI/USB keyboard to an iPad?
I've got a little Korg Microkey and would love to hook this up. I've read in some places you can use the camera kit to do this, but the bod in the Apple store said it wouldn't work as it won't power the keyboard.
What I'd like is a connection for my iPad 2, that will also include an adapter for new iPads as well so I don't have to buy the connector twice.
If there's an audio-in option that's great, but not essential.
Would an I-rig type connector be the best option, or is that overkill? Sorry for the noobish query but I value the experience and expertise of you lot on here so thought I'd check here first before buying the wrong thing!

There's no way around needing to get two connectors I'm afraid as they're the only way to get USB info into an ipad and the iPad 2 and the new ones use different ports. I guess you could plug the Korg into your computer and then try to use WIFI or Bluetooth MIDI.
If the microkey has a USB connection and works on your desktop computer without the need to install drivers ('class compliant') then it will likely work with your iPad. You might need to power it via it's wall wart or by plugging it into a powered USB hub and then into your iPad.

Thanks for the reply, it's USB powered so if need to go via the PC route. I'll have to wait and see what funds I'll have available next year.
powered hub can work wonders for cheap. You'll still need a CCK though and that CCK will not work with your next iPad. FWIW, the 30 pin connector was around for 10 years. People shit a brick when apple changed to lightning but I reckon it'll be around for a bit. And you can of course continue to use your 30pin lightning connector with your iPad 2 when you upgrade.
Mikrokey is pretty think and is compatible with ipad, dont worry.
From korg web
"You can connect the microKEY to your iPad and use it to control apps (※2) such as the Korg iMS-20 via MIDI (※2). If you're using the 25-key model, Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit and a USB cable is all you need (※3). For the 37/61-key models, you just need to connect them via a USB hub that can supply power."
So if you have 37/61 model, buy powered hub.

Oooh that's the one I've got - cheers!
@monzo Works easy here with a microkey. Amazing how much (considering I have other 'full size' options) I end up reaching for the baby board. And it fits in the messenger bag.

Brilliant, thanks for the confirmation, I'll get myself a camera kit! It's a lovely little keyboard, the action's really nice. Look forward to using it with my apps.
