Is Beat Maker 2 on iPhone wort it?
Hi, I’m moving toward my phone recently as a centre piece. I’m using mostly AUM but sometimes I would like to edit live recordings or add something later. I also would like to make beats from time to time. I love Beatmker 3 on iPad. Used to make a lot of beats on it. Is BM 2 a good option as a daw on iPhone? Is it stable?
Comments
Bought it but don’t have it even installed.
Did not like it.
BM2 works good on iPhone. There’s much better out there though.
I also use AUM/Prism on my iPhone. I would use Hammerhead or OCTACHRON w/ Bilbao before ever considering BM2 or BM3.
Bought it in 2013, never used it much
Is stable, and has lots of depth. No AUv3 of course but implementation of IAA is solid. It does most of the things that BM3 does. Build kits and multi sample instruments, deep audio and midi edition. The midi audio edition is still on the platforms top tier. It ships with a lot of multi sample instruments, and kits and they are enough to make tracks on their own. And like BM3 you can make your own. I like the fx too.
It’s an app from the platform’s olden days so the workflow and gui is old timey. There is a learning curve because it does a lot, and has its own way of doing some things, and like BM3 not all users have really plumbed the depths of the app. With the original NS it was the big deal of its day, and I was well excited when they both landed on iPad. I still use it on both iPhone and iPad,
it doesn't have AUv3 support but other than that i made a LOT of music in it back then, it was great app (honestly i was disappointed by BM3 cause they completely changed architecture of app when compared to BM2 which was in my opinion much more straightforward, intuitive and easy to use)
So yeah. I think even now, when lack of AUv3 is not an issue, it's worth to use it ! It can sample IAA synths into audio tracks and there is still few good IAA synths in AppStore
Same. Amazing app, a linear DAW with a brilliant drum interface. I wish instead of the switch away from linear to pattern Machine imitation hadn’t happened and AUv3 support had been added to the original design instead. Never jelled with dumbed down iOS version of Cubase but I chose Logic Audio by Emagic over Cubase early 90s.
Sorry for dumb question: What does it mean it doesn’t support AUv3? It means it won’t accept most of 3rd party apps?
No, not inside the DAW. You have to transfer sound into BM2 either through IAA or by importing audio clips. Unlike older iOS audio protocols like Inter-App Audio (IAA) which required jumping back and forth between different running apps, AUv3 apps load directly inside the DAW’s interface. The host DAW allocates an independent, secure memory container (sandbox) for the plugin. This keeps processing efficient, drastically lowers latency, and ensures that if one plugin crashes, your entire DAW session will not shut down. It is the standard these days, which is similar to how DAWs work on desktop. A lot of older synths have not been updated to AUv3, and likely won’t be in the future, so I find myself still dealing with audio clips pretty regularly.
I'm not sure Beat Maker 2 would be worth it since, as many have pointed out, it doesn't host AUv3 plugins. You need to deal with audio clips. I'm also not sure if it'd be stable as it hasn't been updated in 8 years.
Stable after all these years (don’t fix it if it ain’t broke?) but weirdly only opens on my device when it is connected to cellular data. Go figure
But yeah what you got is IAA, its own sample instruments and kits, kits and sample instruments you make, record in and copy paste audio clips.
I did have some good fun hosting iElectribe for iPhone on the drum pad instrument.
I’m still considering it. Because what would be iPhone Daw’s which has drumpads, sample loading, editing. And apart from Cubasis? I don’t glue with Koala
Groove Rider 2? Granted GR2's sampler isn't as complete as BM2's, but it's still robust with plenty of warping options and such.
I have to give it a thought, watch some tutorials you linked. It’s three times more expensive than BM2..
Indeed it is, but Jim Pavloff (GR2 developer) is actively developing GR2. So far since its launch in January 2025 on iPad, we got AUv3 effects in IFX slots, an iPhone port, a couple additional IFX (including a binaural panner!), and so many other features and quality-of-life updates at no additional cost.
In short, GR2 is insanely good.
The host app is everything, it's what you use every day, so cut corners by buying fewer plugins, if need be, but don't cut corners when buying your host!
How about Sand.
Thats a really good app with drumpads and audio tracks.
