Getting the audio from YouTube

I'm assuming this is impossible to do directly on the iPad. that is, I would love it if I could pipe in the audio from YouTube into audiobus to play along with it on my guitar or bass.

Chime in if you know of a way that is also plausibly legal.

Thanks,

  • Joe

P.S.yes, I know this is not hard to do at all on a desktop computer.

  • Anytube used to be able to do this but Apple made them remove the feature. I haven't found another way to do it through iOS since (other apps also had to do the same).

  • You can leave the background audio turned on in your guitar app ect and play along with youtube videos right? Another option would be to record the video from an external source like another ipad or your pc.

  • Beat Time! was the popular answer to this question on FB.

  • What about Beat Time. I haven't tried it yet, but isn't it supposed to do this?

  • I'm still using the old version of anytune and it is super quick to use but I'm not sure if it will still work on ios8. Beat time sounds interesting. I expect its days might be numbered if the feature is a copyright infringement.

Wow what a great app. Thanks for this! I have been looking for an app that allows both speed and pitch control of YouTube videos forever and this is the one. Only thing it is missing so far is a rotary dial for fine tuning the pitch control (similar to what is already there for the speed) for songs that are tuned in between semitones.

Simple. Works. Easy import from youtube, strips away the video if you wish, saves and 'open in' AS amongst a bunch of others....shhhhh.

Anyone know how to quickly navigate between bookmarks? Double-tap or tap and hold on timeline creates bookmark, swipe to right on video part of screen toggles play/pause, tap and drag on the waveform selects loop points, triple-tap on loop start/endpoint bar removes loop selection, but I haven't figured out any other quick commands.

Edit: A quick response from the developer stated that tapping on the waveform near a marker will automatically snap to it. You can loop between markers by tapping and dragging on waveform near markers and they will also snap. If Apple really is pulling the download features, be sure to get Beat Time! with this feature while you still can!

  • Look at workflow.is there are workflows to rip audio from YT :) (there's a sub reddit or trawl Twitter for links)

  • Thanks, folks! I continue to be amazed at the useful audio content available on YouTube. and I am moving away from the desktop as much as possible right now. BTW, I also use anytune pro. You guys are not saying that I can run YouTube from that app, are you?just to be clear, I want to run YouTube live while I am using other music apps.

  • Didn't know about this one, looks useful. Is it possible to grab small parts of a YouTube vid audio or do you have to download the whole thing and crop it afterwards?

  • Beat time doesn't work so don't waste your money like I just did. I tried 5 different vids and they all look like they are downloading but they just get stuck and the app turns gray. So sick of buying shit and have it not work like people say it does!

  • @Mezzanine It might be people but it might also be you (or some aspect of your set-up). In this case, all I can tell you is that I bought, installed, downloaded, transferred, easily and quickly. And I'm stupid. So, presuming that, unlike me, you're not stupid, I'm guessing it's some other variable in your equation. Might want to take a look. In the meantime, people here are pretty good about sharing information honestly. Might be because they're decent, but might just be game theory, either way, politeness is always in order.

Once the video is open in the YouTube window (after any ads) press the Beat Time! Logo button in the address bar. After it does its preparing and opens in the dedicated player, be sure to press the play button in the lower right corner.

I've only had 1 video so far that took unusually long to prepare for playback (maybe 1.5 minutes), but it still worked. Never had a gray out like you described. Using iPad Air 2 iOS 8.1.2

This is what I like best about it, you don't have to download it to your hard drive to adjust pitch like other apps I have used in the past. It just processes it and opens in the player.

Once in the player, you can export entire file or just a selection in either audio/video (m4v) or just audio (AAC or WAV) formats which is really nice.

  • I'm sorry. I just needed a reboot.. I haven't had my coffee yet. My bad.. Great app...

Brilliant, thanks for the confirmation :) This will be great for grabbing sound effects and odd samples.

  • Love this forum, and so glad I asked, thanks!

I will mostly likely get it this weekend.

    Cheers,

  • Bought this and it works really well. Haven't quite worked out how I define an area to loop or export, but have managed to 'open in' AS to trim, then Electrify for the weirdest, most awful sounding pile of noise I've ever made. Hours of fun!

  • FYI, I bought it on my iPad min (from fall 2013). Opened up YouTube from inside Beat Time. Signed in, found a Beatles video on my playlist. Used top bar to open the video into Beat Time's functions. Exported to an audio file. Then opened the audio file into Anytime Pro... an AudioBus compatible app. (Other AB compatible apps, including AudioShare, work, too.)

All done pretty quickly. I'm happy. All the time and pitch features is icing on the cake IMHO.

  • Does anyone know how to get the markers to appear, so I can just export a small section? The 'help' option is useless and I've tried tapping and selecting everything on the screen but nothing appears, and I only get the option to export the whole file.

It's a useful app but I hate having to second guess how to use it.

  • Double- tap on the timeline to create marker. Double-tap on marker to rename or delete marker. NB: It seems you need to tap a little amount below where you'd expect to - as if the 'hotspot' is misaligned. It does work.

  • Thanks Washboy - I've managed to get the markers to appear and created two, they don't seem to do anything though and I still only have the full track export option - how do you define the area to export?

Is there a tutorial online anywhere? This thing is doing my head in a bit here...

  • Tap, hold and drag in the waveform area to make a 'selection'. When you export, you can opt to export 'Entire File' or 'Selection'.

The only Help I saw was superimposed on the opening screen on first use. You acan make the help reappear one time via a switch in 'Settings' (accessed from the Home page).

  • Thanks - just worked it out before I saw your reply! The help overlay doesn't show that option when you load in the audio, but a different overlay appeared when I re-opened the file from the library telling me how to make the selection.

Good app, I wish they'd just write a few lines of documentation on their website though.

  • Glad you're up 'n' running :D Yes, it is a good and useful app.

  • Newby, pc refugee, ipad4 8.1.2. I can capture and trim files with Beat Time alright but am stumped at how to get them out into AudioShare or such. I can't trigger the Open in. Option and the files open in Beat Time. Also I have that pc insecurity and am looking for an app that shows or finds files on the iPad like where is that atmos.mp3 I just trimmed.

    great community here ....

    TIA

  • Beat Time is great! Had no idea about this one...

To get the audio to other apps, when you have the video playing in Beat Time, click on the 3 horizontal bars logo and choose "export". Choose the format and export it. From there, Beat Time! is set to automatically open the "My Files" screen, and it will show the exported audio. Click on the blue arrow icon to the right of that file and choose "open in".

  • ....and there it is! Wasn't pressing the blue arrow enough or something.

    tanks fer dat
