OP-XY and iphone

Hi, to all owners of OP-XY past current future. Is it worth to invest in it? And if it would cost €1500?

I make music occasionaly, mostly in AUM on the phone. Will incorporate Beatmaker 2 for editing, and I came across good price for this OP-XY. Was always curious about it. Is it fun easy playable like making music in AUM with dozen of apps, or is it redundand?

Best wishes

  • I used to have fun with an OP-1 Field, but sold it 6 months after buying it. First of all, to make ends meet, and secondly, once the "honeymoon period" was done, I found it a little redundant. However, it was a lot of fun to use, playable, and I knew my way around it like the back of my hand. I'm just not sure it was worth the $2000 asking price.

That all being said, there are many groovebox apps in the Appstore that work on iPhone such as Groove Rider 2 (the latter which recently got an iPhone port). And though Groove Rider 2 is $35, that's a fraction of the cost of an OP-XY. Of course like an OP-1 Field and OP-XY, Groove Rider 2 has some limitations built in, such as three IFX per track (which can also be AUv3), 16 tracks total, etc. But it has a playability factor in that it has a clip mode, you can mix between two projects like a DJ, etc.

Then again, it all boils down to what workflow preferences you have and what you're looking to accomplish with music making (as well as what genre(s) you wish to produce). Are you looking to make projects to perform live? Are you looking for just having some fun in the studio?

  • Hi @jwmmakerofmusic :) I just watched a lot of OP XY videos and it seems uninspiring imho, or people makes uninspring tracks. The only thing that I still can’t get of my head is punch fx and maybe cool sequencer. I was thinking of it as another tool to make music. Maybe more apart from iphone than topic suggest. But my temperature is cooling. Maybe it’s better to save for some innovative hardware synth.

  • Get a iPad, that will open your world to many more apps and real estate.

I love my OP-XY, but I' don't pair it with my iPhone/iPad, It will be different when TE will bring a update with USB multi-out. I'm sure it will come, the OP1-Field already has it. In that case you can stream 8 tracks in to AUM, that would be awesome.

Look at the OP-XY creations of this guy, he is really good :

  • Can you try it out? I think playability is the whole deal. If not, I would not. Playability can be so personal. Also, check out the bad gear ep, i never buy anything that hasn’t been reviewed by bad gear.

  • @ecou I have an iPad, just recently gravitaited toward phone, as is more portable

@Pierre118 Nice, even if it’s not my style. But he is mostly using OP-XY as a sequencer in this video..

    What you love about OP-XY?

He is not using it as a sequencer but with the internal sequencer and a external midi controller. All the sound is coming from the OP-XY.

Lol, usually it's the latter where, a majority of the times, people make tracks that are uninspiring, lol.

The only thing that I still can’t get of my head is punch fx and maybe cool sequencer. I was thinking of it as another tool to make music. Maybe more apart from iphone than topic suggest. But my temperature is cooling. Maybe it’s better to save for some innovative hardware synth.

I would say Punch-In FX alone wouldn't be a good reason to spend all that money, even though it is also tempting to me. Drambo has a really cool sequencer which, if I'm not mistaken, can be used in AUM (although I haven't used Drambo in a very long time lol). There are also plenty of cool sequencer plugins in the Appstore that can be used in AUM. :)

I'd say if you have the money, sprint for an iPad with at least 512gb storage (although these days, 1TB is the minimum I require for all the rompler apps I have as well as for my myriad of drum and audio samples totalling over 100gb). Or if you're satisfied with your iPhone and have some extra money to spend, try out Groove Rider 2 after watching @sfm 's wonderful tutorial series about the app.

And of course there's @jakoB_haQ 's amazing long-form video about the app as well.

It definitely has a more "hardware feel", and spoiler alert, there is "chance" in GR2's sequencer (where you can set the probability of a note playing back).

Don't mind me. I'm obsessed with GR2 at the moment and trying to steer you away from a possible 1500 quid mistake. Sure you may have GAS now, but may have buyer's remorse later, lol.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic Jim, I think it's a matter of liking hardware knobs and encoders to control a music device and create music with it. I don't like the touch controls and swiping capabilities of a iPhone/iPad. Of course we can discuss about this but it is a personal preference.

I admit, the OP-XY is not cheap and not for everyone but it can do a lot. Horses for courses :)

That's fair to be honest. Then again, there are many hardware controllers out there which can be used with iPhone/iPad via Bluetooth and USB-C. :) That could be another option @Mateusz could consider.

That's the true, there are always will be choices. @Mateusz asked specificly about the OP-XY in combination with a iPhone and at this moment I would say no, but when multi-usb will be available it could be a great combination using 8 tracks in AUM. I think he is triggered by the 30% discount for the OP-XY, so I can understand his question.

  • For what it's worth. Since buying my OPXY I havn't used my ipad for anything else then recording vocals and even that is shifting to my OP1F. Mixing is still an ipad thing though. I just really like sequencing and sampling my other hardware and software synths. I guess working on touchscreens isn't doing it for me like it used to.

I wouldn't buy it for just the punch in fx though. They get gimmicks fast, at leest for the fairly simple song arrangements I make.

  • Just one opinion from my experience with it- I bought the OP-XY thinking it would be the perfect partner to my OP-1f. But I didn't like it and it didn't really pair that well with the OP1. TE's field system is not a system, just different objects that share a few design ideas. Luckily, I bought it when TE had that big sale and put it on consignment after the sale was done so I didn't lose any money.
It does a lot but I found it fussy to use. They have since come out with updates that address some of the annoying issues, like sample management.

I found the step components and punch-in effects surprisingly unimpressive and awkward. There is a decent screen but the font is tiny and the screen gets used as much for funny animations as it does for information. I wished for way more feedback. And also wished for more processing power, it felt underpowered to me, I kept seeing the little icon that lets you know you're reaching its capacity. It didn't take much effort to light that up.

I didn't like the included synths or samples as much as the ones on the OP-1f and I disliked the lack of effects. I found out that my iPad is the perfect partner for my OP-1f.

I'm sure great tracks can be made with an OP-XY and I think it's polarizing- you'll either love the workflow or hate it. I read the manual several times, I worked hard to get to know it but I never got inspired by it.

Right. That 30% discount is tempting to me too to be honest, but then I remember all the great apps I have on iPhone and iPad, and I'm solid for the time being. :)

I can understand it's tempting, my good friend. But you make awesome music with your iPad/iPhone, fight the GAS :)

I already did, and I'm helping Mateusz fight it as well. 😂 No man is an island after all, haha.

  • Ok I’m probably biased cause I make soundpacks for the OP-XY but it’s super easy to sit down and come up with something quickly. I do wish they had one onboard synth that was super complex instead of just having a few knobs to tweak and only one LFO. I guess having the parameter locks is like having multiple LFOs, but still have just one super deep synth where you could go crazy with sound design would make this synth a 10 for me.. Also it would be great to get the OP-1F effects as the ones on the OP-XY are a little basic. Finally having one audio track would be something I would welcome 💯.
I’ve been working on Trip Hop Soundpack for over a year now and it’s getting super close to a release.
Here is a tiny teaser I put out for it the other day..
is it worth 2000 dollars? Not sure but with the 30 percent off sale going I would say grab it!

  • Buy a used OP-Z and consider it a demo version of the OP-XY. I've never used the OP-XY, but people say the OP-Z does 80% of what it can do for 20% of the price. I have the OP-Z, and it's the most inspiring gear I've ever used.

    I recognize your dilemma.
This is my thoughts ( maybe wishful thinking)

I’ve got every sequencer made for the iPad.

Never gelled with any of them. It is stupid, but that’s how it is for me. I envy those of you who master Drambo, Grooverider, Prism, Koala etc.

I’ve also invested in tons of great sounding ios synths, and somehow I enjoy the iPad as an amazing SOUNDdevice. Rompler, sampler, innovative synths, replicates of classics - for a fraction of the hardware price.

I have just ordered an OP-XY (sale).
My wish is to compose on the go, play the keyboard, sequence patterns, make arrangements - search for happy accidents.

    A sketchbook.

Then hook up the sequencer to the iPad, and route the midi from the OP into 100’s of amazing synths and FX’s. Record stems into AUM, and transfer the files to the MAC for mixing. Best of all worlds.

Im taking a risk - the OP-XY minus 30% is still a lot of money I don’t have (🫣), - but if the setup works as intended, I’ll have a lot of fun, my output will expand, and the value of my iPad/apps will become much higher.

….then I just need to sell all my old hardware collecting dust…why is that sooo difficult?

@128BPM I can feel you, I hope it will be even more for you, than you wish to. Please come back and share your thoughts. For various reasons as the end of today, I’m not going to buy OP-XY (but the sale is still next few days 🫣)
    @jwmmakerofmusic
Thank you for sharing your experiences and helping me fight the GAS. I had Octatrack in past, used it for few hours. Couldn’t force myself. I had Akai Live III- the same. I’m only coming back to ios music making. Maybe because it’s more intuitive and instant?
The only hardware I do own and love is Waldorf Wave XT but it has knooobs, and there is not much menu swaping.
But I have GAS for two other hardware synths now, and need to fight it too, me so… weak

Cheers mate. :) If you're gassing for anything, perhaps it may be better to get a hardware controller (whether bluetooth or USB-C) with a lot of knobs and not much menu swaping. :) Hopefully you can overcome this GAS.
