Help & advice for hooking up MIDI controller keys

I've been trying to hook up my Doepfer LMK2+ MIDI master keyboard to my iPad Air using a Line6 MIDI Mobilizer II. It's very frustrating because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't no matter what app I try. I never have any trouble hooking up a Korg Micro key keyboard with the Apple CCK. But I can't get the Doepfer to communicate with the iPad reliably.

It seems random whether it is going to want to work or not. Maybe I'm goofing something up, but I don't know what. Here's what I do: I close all the apps and restart the iPad. Airplane mode on. Then I plug in the MIDI mobilizer II that's coming from MIDI out on the Doepfer that is powered up. Then I launch an app such as Korg module or Thor. And it's a crap shoot whether or not the Doepfer keyboard works to play the app. It was working fine last night and this morning it's not. Very frustrating!

Any ideas or suggestions I can try to trouble shoot this?

  • Additional info: I'm using the Apple Lightning to 30 pin adaptor to get the MIDI mobilizer II into my iPad Air.

Does anyone have some ideas for this perplexing issue?

  • Some questions:

Did you previously use the LMK2+/MIDI MobilizerII combination with a previous iDevice successfully (or did you buy the MobilizerII + Lighting-30pin adapter for the iPad Air)?

Even when your target app (eg Thor) isn't responding to you pressing keys on the LMK2+, does the 'MIDI In' LED on the MobilizerII flash?

Have you used the Line6 'MIDI Memo Recorder' app and updated the MobilizerII firmware to the latest version?

I'm not sure it's important but I would set things up in a different order and do it that way every time, i.e. make sure LMK2+ and iPad are turned off, connect all cabling and MobilizerII between LMK2+ and iPad, turn on iPad and when live, turn on LMK2+, test MobilizerII LED responds to playing keys, launch iPad app(s).

    Over to you... :)

  • Thanks washboy. Your procedure worked OK several times in a row.

I previously used the MIDI mobilizer with an older iPad and bought the Apple lightning to 30 pin adapter for the iPad Air. But I wasn't using the Doepfer with the old iPad.

It did seem to work consistantly so far using the start up sequence you suggested. But it is not real reliable and the communication link is lost if the iPad goes to sleep, so I need to remember to turn the auto lock to "never." When I wake the iPad back up, it no longer works and the MIDI in LED does not light up when I play the keyboard.

Haven't updated the MIDI Mobilizer firmware yet, but I plan to as soon as I can get the iPad back from my grand daughter.

    Thanks again for your help.
