Listening now to "Opacity". This is absolutely gorgeous. ❤️ So some questions...
Which elements were HALion Sonic Play? Which elements were not, and what else was used?
Which app did you use as the host? AUM this time? Koala Sampler?
Which reverb(s) did you use?
That's all. ☺️
Thank you!🙂
It’s almost all HALion, sequenced by GlitchStep. The only exception is the female voice that is heard intermittently. That’s a custom patch that I made in Outgrowth.
AUM.
My old standby, Eventide Blackhole.
Nice! I may have to give Glitchstep a go soon, or wait for Glitchbreaks 2. ❤️ Nice custom patch!
I should've known. Lol.
About to download the Eventide reverbs to my iPhone and iPad. Great reverbs, but I always forget I purchased them. 🫣
Okay, next question. Your Ambient music is always so subtle. Like in that elements rarely "stick out" in the mix, and yet the piece as a whole evolves so gently. I'd love to achieve Ambient in such a fashion.
I admit that my Ambient tends to be more "heavy-handed", where you can tell when an element comes in/fades out, and it brings the listener's attention to it. Not that there's anything wrong with that type of Ambient, but how do I go "softer" and evolve things more subtly?
I must say I feel a bit diffident about setting myself up as some kind of pundit on this topic. Anything I say here will just be the by-product of my meandering experience.
I usually limit myself to 2 or 3 instruments. I find that more than that tends to lead to mud.
No sharp edges. An app I use a lot is Attack Softener from Blue Mangoo. It’s a one-trick pony but it does that trick really well.
In addition to Blackhole the other reverb I use is Velvet Machine. A trick I use in that app is to put a short melodic passage through the Max Cloud preset and then slowly dial back the time and the mix. I’ve made some really nice pads like that.
I find that when I have a choice of scale quantizations I will almost invariably choose either the mixolydian or the lydian mode. The lydian, with that sharped 4th, can be a world of its own.
I will often send the whole mix through the Infected Mushroom app Wider. Set to about 80-90%.
My favorite BPM is 20. I wish AUM went lower than that.🙂
Before I do a final mix I listen one last time for anything that could be eliminated. This is one case where less really is more.
I hope this helps. I look forward to hearing whatever you do!🙂
Sweet. This insight does help me. ☺️
I will add one more observation. I tend to avoid distortion of any kind.
Lovely work and some useful info.. Attack Softener is a great little app and I totally agree about distortion…
Btw you do know that in AUM you can set the Clock Ratio and Clock Factor for individual apps so you can go down to 1 or 2 bpm (assuming the app is coded correctly).
