Cable questions

I have a couple of cabling questions which I would appreciate any input on.

(1) I was looking for a quick way to output the sounds from my iPhone into my iPad. I might do this for an app without Audiobus support, or where I want to control the interface on two apps at the same time. I purchased a short mini-jack to mini-jack cable where each end has "mic" capability / four bands. This works but I can't monitor the sound as it is being sent back out the cable from the iPad to the iPhone. Is it possible to monitor the iPad's sound via its speaker even though a mic/headphone is plugged in? If not, is there a similarly easy way to input a signal which can be monitored? I could use my Apogee jam for input but I am trying to have a solution which I can carry around at all times. (I was thinking of getting a short stereo mini-jack cable, then short cable which splits the iPad output to stereo / mic.)

(2) I wanted to buy a couple of CCKs, but they retail for $29 in the U.S. I was wondering if anybody had tried using a standard Lightning-to-USB cable, then plugging it into a female USB-female USB connector. That would seem to provide the same connection at both ends. The USB adapters sell for $4 which is a much better deal.

Thanks,
Michael

  • hi there,
no, there's no way to get a speaker-output out of the iPad, when you have a 3.5 TRRS connected.
However, as sonn as you connect an output through a CCK, it will be possible to monitor your sounds through that (careful to get an original Apple-CCK, though..). Short: whatever you connect LAST, will be active, thus if you have in and out on TRRS and connect a CCK with in and out, also, only the CCK will transport in as well as out!
Another possibility would be something like the Tascam IXZ, which gives you XLR/TRS input (with battery-powered Phantompower, if needed) and at the same time an 3.5TRS line-out for monitoring. There might be other cheap gadgets to do the same, I got myself the IXZ, it's around€ 40 .
    Good luck, cheers, t

  • and: I haven't tried the USBUSB connection, but don't believe it will be possible... .Let us know, how you fare with that. t

  • If you're even remotely serious about using you iOS device to make music, don't dick around and just get the official Apple CCK. There "may" be a device here or there that will work, but you're going to waste a lot of money and time trying to find it. I say buy cheap when you can, but that is one thing you just need to pony up the cash for. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy headaches, because that is most likely what you'll get.

  • Thanks for the advice. Having tried a bunch of knock-off Lightning USB chargers, all of which eventually failed, I agree it is simpler to buy the Apple CCK product, which I do own. I was just thinking about something to throw in a couple of small cable bags I have in my briefcase / car which would get only occasional use. @animal: thanks for clarifying the no-output issue. I'll either live with no monitoring or just do this when I have my Apogee Jam around.
