Novation Audiohub fail, Akai EIE (red face) win?

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

So I went to the PMT Uk music shop today to check out the novation audiohub. I plugged all of my existing set up 2x mpk mini and ipad via cck into the thing. All fired up as expected so I started getting excited but then I realized that audiobus will only see the main output but 3 and 4 (which I was hoping to use to send the click to the drummer) did not appear. Anyways, after a phone all to Novation it turns out that only the stereo out is supported when used with the ipad. I found it strange but I guess they'll know what they're talking about.

Since I was actually undecided between this and Akai EIE red face I have ordered for it to be brought into the store so I can try that. I know that EIE seems to be quite popular here. Have people been successful at using all four audio outs? Any other stuff I should bare in mind when I go to try it out in store this Wednesday?

Thanks

I've been able to use all four outputs in several apps. IIRC, you can't split pairs...that is, if you're using ch 1 with balanced XLR, you have to use the same with ch 2. In that case, you can set ch 3 and 4 to either TRS or XLR, but they both have to match.

  • Cool thanks. There doesn't seem to be a more feature packed interface that this so I think I'm going to go for it. I'll be looking at doing proper gigs soon so it only seems too right to upgrade. One thing that really worries me is the weight but I used to play bass in my last band so nothing can really scare me. Also the salesman when asked which one to choose between this and novation audiohub really shitted the akai saying he's had a lot of returns. Mmmm, I guess I'm buying it in a physical shop so will drop it right back should shit happen ;)

  • Thanks for the info @funjunkie27

  • No worries @supadom. I hope it works well for you. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it after you've run it through the paces.

  • Did you go To PMT on Cowley Road supadom? (-:

  • I've had the redface EIE for almost a year and not a single problem. Really. And I wish I knew how the mic pre's stand up to the higher priced Focusrite stuff.

  • That's brilliant news @Martygras Some people on the net report that it has very low signal level with the akai drivers and even akai has Asio4all download link on the product page. I guess that's mostly windows folk.

  • I've not had any problems either, but I'm using mine strictly with iOS devices.

  • Can the Akai EIE be powered by a battery? I kind of doubt it but wondering nonetheless.

  • Nope @miguelmarcos for that you have behringer uca222. Neither audiohub will work off the USB port if you want to use built in usb hubs.

I personally prefer the Music Box further down cowley but they're not great for electronic stuff, more like hanging out and talking about the good ole days.

I believe it uses a dc 6VDC (center pin positive) needs to be able to handle 3amps though. So, yes, and thank you for the idea.

I know it's probably a silly Q but will audiobus see all of the outputs of the EiE or will I need a daw in the output to take advantage of them?

  • I really look forward a second hand AKAI EIE interface to use with my ipad.
@supadom "Neither audiohub will work off the USB port if you want to use built in usb hubs"
Can you confirm me that the 3 USB Hub ports located at the back of the AKAI EIE are actually recognized and can be used to send/receive midi if the interface is connected to an Ipad ?
    Thks

I think MiMix just got updated. With output matrix. Check that out.

  • I can't check now if AB recognizes them @superdom, but I seem to recall it does, however @Macao95's solution should too.

@Johnba - I use the three USB ports with midi controllers all the time. It works great.

  • I'll add that I also use the 5 pin DIN midi at the same time with the three USBs with no problems.

  • The baby is here! Tomorrow I'm expecting reloop keypad to arrive which alongside upcoming samplr update should pretty much wrap up my Christmas!

  • Looks sexy in your setup!

  • That's awesome! Can you send different audio to the different outputs with just audiobus?

  • Nope, just via mimix, loopy still can't do it according to @Michael and audiobus relies on output apps to handle that, I believe.

  • Thanks @funjunkie27 I think it would look sexy in any set up! I think it will look fab next to the reloop keypad, and a lot simpler with one keyboard and about million knobs!

  • We're expecting updated pics then @supadom.

  • For sure, you made me curious about your set up @funjunkie27!

  • I'm using my setup mostly for when friends come over for very informal jams. Obviously the fireplace isn't getting any use, but I'm in Atlanta, so it's mostly for looks anyway.

The music stand works great for my iPad4 and mini retina.

The PA is on loan from our drummer, and the drum kit is a mix of the drummers Roland head and pads along with my Alesis head and pads (FrankenKit.)

The keys are all M-Audio (Oxygen 49 and 25 and Soundstation.)
