  • Im just trying to find a work flow and at the moment am messing about with everything to see where it could fit in.
    Then along comes something else..

  • @Sebastian - sorry I know this is the audiobus forum but any tips on how to record loops from djay into loopy? I've tried recording a few loops into it and while they're in sync, it's not smooth as I think I'm not hitting the record button at the right time or stopping recording at the right time so it's messing up the loop length? Am I right to assume that loopy automatically beat matches so as long as we can put in some proper loops with a definitive downbeat, they'll loop fine?

    Thnx in advance

  • I'm really sorry but I don't have this depth of knowledge about Loopy and syncing it to other stuff. I would suggest going over to the Loopy forum (looks almost the same, has almost the same nice people) and asking Michael and more importantly other users over there: http://forum.loopyapp.com

  • Thanks Sebastian!

  • Hey guys, have any of you experienced this problem with djay? I think I just need to get some sleep but I can't figure out the solution to this. There is a track that djay is just not detecting the proper tempo. (For reference, its a new Depeche Mode song Alive) and when I try to choose a loop, even though I can specify the loop points, if I try to sync it with another song's loop like say led zeppelin black dog, they won't sync because its got the wrong bpm down. I'm really saddened by this as it means this app isn't as valuable as I thought it could be to my workflow as I often like to match loops together to see what fits and what doesn't, filter out certain sounds and record into a daw. But if the bpm analysis is shit, then I've got to rely on another app just for accurate bpm analysis (or else an app like Glitchbreak won't match up) or like stokastik where even though its not ab compatible, I want to play it side by side to hear how both grooves sound together. And then another app to cut and paste the loops like Hokusai/audio share then send to loopy, ugh....

Thanks in advance and sorry for any negativity that might be present in my post.

    Must sleep... Sleep is good

  • Have you tried setting cue points at the start of the loops?

  • edited April 2013

Hi Dave, yeah I pick the exact start point of the loop but the problem in my opinion is the BPM analysis. because its detecting a 93 bpm, its cutting the loop short. to be fair to the app, the song doesnt have many loud downbeats so its possibly not picking that up well as say some dr dre hip hop song or any song that has a strong downbeat. but traktor picks it up easily and this new app, dj player that noisy ninja recommended analyzes it correctly. i also imagine that the song along with many songs in general have intentionally been mixed without a prominent beat to allow djs to lay down their own beats under the song. once again wouldnt be a problem if you could adjust the bpm a lot on djay but it looks like youre limited to like 10 bpm (the songs bpm is at 124 but im maxing at like 101)

djay is still useful but because its not accurate, makes me not want to rely on it as much.

    thanks for chiming in though

  • Since you're just using a loop from that track, have you tried trimming it down manually thru another app then loading the loop in Djay? That way, Djay has less to analyze?

    @jackfancy

    two thoughts:

    1) I think it can only play songs from music library

    2) At least for me, part of my initial love for this app was ability to avoid that part of my workflow. im not a dj but i do like sampling drum beats and general sounds from songs, mangling them up to work with original ideas ive created. so the ability to just plop in a song in djay and listen to diff sections in real time alongside my ideas helped immensely. but if i now have to go in and surgically cut every part of any song i wanna try out, theres really no need for djay anymore. might as well plop the loops directly into loopy or daw which is what ive done in past.

  • @gjcyrus if you hold down on the '+' button, it will allow you to paste from the audiocopy function....

  • @jack thnx! That's a great trick and really convenient. I never knew that. It's just the bpm analysis for certain songs that's causing problems for me. It's still in my workflow process but now I know that if something's not smooth, to double check the bpm on another app

  • Did you try the tap function that pops up when you hold down the bpm display above the pitch slider ?

No sure if this would help improve the looping function some how ?

  • gjcyrus said " once again wouldnt be a problem if you could adjust the bpm a lot on djay but it looks like youre limited to like 10 bpm (the songs bpm is at 124 but im maxing at like 101)"

In general settings change the speed slider range to 75% and you should be able to add a lot more ?

  • @jackfancy thanks for the awesome audiocopy/paste tip!

@dave - thanks! it worked! its not perfect though as ideally id like to be lazy and just let an app figure it out for me down to the decimal but your tips have helped a lot. especially until more djay apps become audiobus compatible.

    thanks again dave and jack!

  • Have you seen this app...

    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/anytune-pro+-music-practice/id478293637?mt=8

Has similar functions to what we discussed...may be of use.

  • @DaveMagoo - yes i did buy that app after you (or someone else) recommended it on the other thread. Thanks for reminding me though as I forgot it was in my arsenal.

Although when i just opened it, it looks like bpm can only be whole numbers, not decimals. might not be a big deal in 99 percent of cases but for me, im trying out tons of loops and the less editing and thinking i have to do, the better as i can focus more on having fun and focusing on feel. that last one percent can end up being a buzzkill to an otherwise creative jam.

have you tried traktor? ive been spoiled by that app. bpm analysis. the layout and view of the waveform. if only traktor and djay could have a baby :)

  • No i keep checking Traktor it looks really good may get it but djay will do for now ;)

I hear you about the workflow I'm still not set yet..less musical admin the better hehe

  • Haha musical admin, totally..

got another djay musical admin question that i havent been able to figure out yet. say ive got two songs playing at the same, accurate bpm, chosen the start points but one might be 4 bars while the other 8 bars. is there a single button i can push so that both loops start at the same time?

  • I cant find anything to sync start the loops sorry.

You could play one loop and cue the other one up then with it running in the background you press the opposite end of the cross fader(to its current position) and it cuts the loop in to the mix so both play at the same time and to release just let go and it cuts back to the original loop.

Not exactly what you wanted but it may be useful if you don't know about it already.

  • iMashup is free for 24hrs. Its not on the bus but has copy/paste, thought it might be of use to some of you.

@noisyninja - thnx for the heads up!

i actually paid for that app when it first came out but truthfully forgot about it until you mentioned it. whats really great is the bpm analysis and layout grid when you zoom in. But the copy/paste is only within the app, not audiocopy/paste unless I did something wrong. So what I did is if I like a certain loop that I want to paste in another app, you have to delete all the other parts you dont need, press home button and export via email. once you get it via email, you can now open in audioshare, remaster, loopy, multitrack and djay.

Still not entirely smooth but is a nice medium between djay and traktor.

@dave - thnx, will give that a try. to give credit to djay, its forced me to improve my timing on really listening to beat and when to hit loop. ive pretty much got it down.

  • Ah right. I downloaded it as it was free this morning and will probably find use for it someday. Havent played with it yet but saw the words copy/paste and presumed it was between apps

@Dave - Thanks man! Just bought it. Now to see what it does haha

Oh dude! this thing is great man! thanks dave! It detected the right bpm for the song that djay initially had problems with and it set the exact loop times perfectly!

  • @davemagoo - they also have an ipad app remixer2 where you can have two songs and eq. Highly recommend but it doesn't have audiobus yet. If it doesn't detect downbeat initially, just click double arrow twice and ur set. Huge time saver for me. Thnx again for letting me know about this app.

  • On the bus now too....you have been spoiled this week !

    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/remixer2/id505234111?mt=8

  • Btw does remixer 2 have audiocopy/paste into the app or 'open in..' as I keep my songs on a nas drive and import them with filebrowser audioshare ?

  • Oh wow! its been a good week.

I'll have to double check later after work but i dont think so since i tried playing around to see how i might get audio out of it. credit djay in that they have that feature to copy audio into it.
