Phantom - iPad/HW Studio Track

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

While waiting for the most opportune moment to upgrade to iOS8 I've been using the iPad alongside my hw studio set-up.

I've also cured my iOS app GAS for a while by dropping a load of cash on a new PC and Cubase 8 Pro. I got the new studio set-up running a couple of weeks ago and this track is a the first complete piece to come through. The iPad is in there, connected through an iTrack Dock, playing a supporting role - iMini provides the deep bass that sits under the main sections and holds it all up. The rest is a combination of my hw synths and a few of Cubase's native VST Instruments - the idea being to test getting all possible sources working together.

It works for me - of course YMMV - feedback/criticisms (especially on how it sounds on different systems - or the production quality generally) much appreciated.

If they remake The Warriors this should be in there.

Being a words kind of guy, I liked the vocal samples but probably would have preferred to hear them / been given the clue etc earlier in the piece.

To my discredit I tend to bring some structural 'rules' (there are no rules) to music from writing and in pieces of almost ten minutes there's a part of me that wants to be led along, if not precisely in three acts (beg/mid/end) at least in something like that....but that's an editorial thought. The sound was certainly very full.

Congrats on putting a system together, may it get the hell out of the way and let you produce plenty over the coming year.

Cheers for the feedback - both points good and valid. Once I'd got the arrangement completed, the first half of the track just didn't quite sit right and if I'm honest, it could lose 32 bars from that section, but I also enjoyed the build and couldn't quite decide which 32 bars needed to go!

You're also right about the vocals, another point I ummed and ahhed about. However, I am working on getting as many tracks through an end-to-end process (trying to break a bad case of loopitis that was developing - it can get nasty if you let it take hold!) as I can and trying make creative decisions and sticking with them. All good points to work on for the next track.

The system is working well - so far so good. I've got a few days away between Xmas and New Year so I'm planning on getting some loops together with the iPad ready to bring into the main set-up and turn into tracks in the New Year.

Thanks again for taking the time listen and comment - appreciated.
