Something like Loopy, but for MIDI only?

I'm looking for small MIDI looper app. I just want to record MIDI notes over a few bars and loop it synchronized to a incoming MIDI clock. I don't need more than one channel or any other bells and wistles. But iPhone compatibility is essential and record quantization would be great.

Is there any app out there which can do that?

  • Good question.

BM2 will do this. But it's not 'small'.

Pro midi is worth checking out. Pretty sure it has midi in and out and you can sync it to an incoming clock.

    Try also genome.

Ah. Pro midi and genome not for iPhone sorry.

MidiSequencer? (Might not have midi in though).

Nanostudio will do what you ask. But you can't send that midi out again live (which I assume you want to do).

It might be BM2 is the answer.

  • Little Midi Machine?

  • Little Midi Machine, also FunkBox has a Bass Sequencer. Also look for MIDI Editor

  • Or Xynthesizr!!!

  • Xynthesisz, great suggestion. Didn't know it was universal.

  • think LMM, Funkbox and xynthesizer will all quantize to 16th notes. Maybe 32nds in xynthesizer with the correct tempo settings.

If you need higher resolution and for the midi to come back out of the all, I think BM2 is the only solution. NS is definitely made for live recording/looping of MIDI but doesn't support MIDI out.

  • Wow I had this exact question this morning, except something to sync up with Loopy. Will Genome work well for this purpose on an ipad?

  • If Auxy gets midi implementation that might be best solution. (Haven't picked that up yet though so could be wrong)

  • I do not have it but I. Think Genome might be able to

  • Thanks for the suggestions ... but: These apps are all no loopers. Little MIDI Machine, Funkbox & Co. are step sequencers. I also don't want to use a DAW to do this. My definition of a looper is: Hit Record, play some bars, hit Stop. Now, the playback starts automatically with quantized notes. One knob operation, same as with audio loopers. Nothing more.

Changeling Sequencer can pretty much do that, but it isn't a specialised looper as such.

edit : ugh, not for iphone sorry.

  • I think BM2 might be your only answer on iPhone. (I know it's a DAW but maybe you could pretend it isn't a daw).

    Genome and ProMidi on iPad.

  • As an aside, now would be a great time for everyone who wants this sort of functionality to request it of Michael and the Loopy Masterpiece edition. Personally, I want Loopy to record both audio and MIDI (when present) so that you can commit with audio if you want but edit MIDI later if you want/need.

@klangsulfat an Alesis MMT-8 will do it. :)

@alldevs seems this is market opportunity. Has been requested on the Loopy forums repeatedly since I joined several years back. cc /@midiSequencer

  • Not an app .

But this sounds like it would do what you want

Exactly this thing reminds me to look again for a MIDI looper app ;-)

  • Michael has already described MIDI loops with the same functionality as audio, in one of his design videos. #3 IIRC. But 2016 at least ...

  • 2016 really? Damn - I thought he said in a video that it could take several months, to a year and he hoped to have it out by Xmas next year?

  • I'll try making a patch in PureData (free app) within next 2 months but the problem is I'm sure someone else will catch me up with a dedicated app... if anyone with PureData skills is interested pm me! ( I consider myself novice, but I'll try for the glory!)

  • This all sounds like something @adamkumpf of Fiddlewax fame could sort out. FWPro's looper acts like an audio looper, but is recording quantized midi in the background for export out. Maybe he could be talked into making a FWPro Mini for iPhone if he thought the interest were there. I'd be onboard.

The only thing about FWPro is that it relies on the onscreen keys (no external keyboard) but I think he's working on adding support for that.

yep, it seems this will be a while in the making. Likely 2016 for the iPad version of Loopy Masterpiece, and I don't recall if he might have mentioned later release for an iPhone version.

In the meantime, there are folks around here who have gotten pretty good at the PureData patch creation. Maybe this mobmuplat sequencer could be turned into a MIDI looper? ...maybe I'm making it obvious that I have no idea what I'm talking about lol
