Magellan IAP?
It's on sale. Anything worth getting?

I like the 'gloomy atmospheres' but -as ever- a subjective matter. I always get the feeling that I could make all of these if, like a monkey and a typewriter, I got lucky, but it's worth a few dollars to me to benefit from the work of others.
For all of that, when was the last time you recorded anything with Magellan?
So, my long-winded answer would be: Worth it if you use the app a fair amount, but won't turn it into something it's not if you don't.
2 cents etc.
Thanks, JG. Are you saying you have all of Magellan's IAPs? Anything non-gloomy that stands out?
I'll admit to not recording much with it, but I still like to experiment and save any interesting sounds I come up with.
I thought the Mandrakonian free patches were full of great stuff - so if you haven't already start with that (and Paul Beechams). I think with the randomize feature of Magellan I don't need to pay for patches. Spend 30 mins hitting Randomize patch - save any that you like. In 30 mins you're bound to come up with several useable sounds. Magellan doesn't have the best sounds out there as far as synths - but it's my maybe my favourite virtual keyboard for playing. And great midi!
I have them all. As it's just us two here in the hall please bear witness to my weakness etc.
I will also rationalize my decision by blaming The Spawn Button. I love The Spawn Button. And therefore (you'd think) I'd never buy anything, just spawn instead etc. But, well Doctor, it just seems, for the most part, that their spawns are better than mine. Their lottery tickets are luckier etc (but let me buy just one more....).
For the price of a few dollars here and there I still think they're a good buy (especially discounted).
Favorite Magellan IAP Sound of the Moment: [14] Dolly (from the Atlantic pack). Simple but can be used for so very much. Well, it was today.....
I bought the New Wave Mega 1 IAP for $2.99. It has some good sounds (leads, basses, appregios). Worth the 3 bucks I spent on it.
Thanks, guys.
Hello, this is Jesse from New Wave Presets.
Thanks for your purchase mkell424! And everyone else who bought my packages for Magellan.
Just to let everyone know, I rarely use the spawn feature for the sounds I make. Not that it isn't a fantastic feature, it really is. Most of the time it's just so much faster to make a sound from an initialized state. I like to make a bunch of sounds in all the different categories for example, keys, leads, pads, FX, and drums. Then tweak variations from those templates. And I often find a lot of nice experimental sounds along the way. This is just how I work, but I'd like to hear how you all go about sound design.
One thing that is fun to mess around with is to experiment with cranking the tempo up to max along with the arp speed and modulate the comb filters with the LFO's for cool effects. This makes some interesting sounds
By the way the latest preset package I made for Magellan 'Mega Pack 3' is by far the most 'gloomy' and dark of the 3 packages. 'mega Pack 1' and 2 have more standard sounds. And although it's not out yet my upcoming package 'Drone' is the most experimental and strange of them all.
Thanks - if I get some iTunes gift cards for Xmas I may well consider picking up a pack.

I do this, but...
...more often than not I audition presets or spawn/randomize until I find something close to what I'm looking for and tweak from there. I hope to get to a place where starting from INIT is faster.
Cool tip. Thanks.
One other thing I wanted to add. Many times I find Magellan most useful for generating sample content for other music apps to mangle. And it's not really that each preset has to be so complex and evolving to be useful. Something fun to mess around with is the synth 'couple' feature. If you take one low evolving pad and couple it with a higher pitched simple tone and sample it, the sound can be great fodder for something like 'Sector' or 'Samplr'. The 'couple' feature is great for mixing and matching all the free and paid for sounds.
Man, I have way too many synth apps, I forgot I even had Magellan. Guess what I'll be doing tonight? I just opened it to see what expansions I already had and fell in love again with it!
@Jesse Good contributions, both in-app there and on-screen here. Appreciate your straight-forwardness.
