At wit's end regarding live loop triggering

Hello everyone,

I'm a guitarist and I got an iPad yesterday for the sole purpose of using it with Beatmaker 2 or Loopy for loop triggering (with a KMI Softstep) going into effects such as Turnado for live manipulation.

Why does nothing quite get there? Beatmaker 2 seemed like it would be perfect but alas its x-groups behave strangely (strangely meaning, I read the manual, thought: "this sounds like exactly what I've been looking for!" only to be met with disappointment).
This user on the BM2 forums explains it best and is of the same opinion of me regarding the x-groups:
http://intua.net/forums/discussion/3383/choke-groups-and-auto-loop-behavior-fix/p1

Why can't triggering another pad in the same choke group just stop the other one(s) altogether, instead of doing this strange jumping back and forth behaviour? :(

Loopy is ok but it doesn't have any kind of individual loop quantising, so you always have to wait until the end of the current loop for the next to start, also it's just not really precise enough, loops that loop perfectly well in any other piece of software I put them in always seem "off" when imported into loop, requiring some extremely finicky readjustment.

I've spent the best part of 6 months researching apps for loop triggering but it just seems there's a huge case of close-but-no-cigar with all of them.

Is there an app I'm missing? Can someone offer up any advice? It would be much appreciated as I'm sort of losing it here!

Cheers and merry christmas everyone!

Louis

  • p.s. Am I simply looking for something that doesn't exist? Sorry to bump.

  • I asked a question about this several months ago. I went down the same path as you. I got frustrated with beatmaker as well. It's great for one shots but not for loops.

I ended up getting a launchpad s and using the launchpad app with the IAP. It works really well. The HUGE downside is that it won't work with other controllers. So, the soft step is out, I'm afraid. One plus with the launchpad s is that it does function as a generic midi controller in other apps so I use it to trigger single shot pads in Beatmaker.

I really wish either electrify or protein der klang would add controller support. These are great looper apps, but I, like you, really want to use a controller.

Good luck. I hope you find something that will work for you. If you do, please let us know.

  • Instead of triggering the loops, you could use your controller to toggle mutes (or send vol=0 and vol=127 for loopy). That way, all of your loops are in time all of the time. Might require two presses to 'switch' loops though (a mute and an unmute) which might be too much for quick switching via foot controller (easy enough with fingers).

I think you could very well be looking for something that doesn't exist in a single app. I moved to iOS from a PC/Ableton setup using Softstep to trigger one shots and loops, and ran into similar issues on the iOS side. I've had to change my workflow and mindset a bit, sometimes using app combos to pull things off I could do with Ableton alone.

  • Hello lads,

Thank you for the replies, much appreciated!

@conformal To me it seems there are lots of apps that do EVERYTHING AND SHINY THINGS AND PHYSICS, except one of the few smalls things I actually really need, and that one small thing differs on an app to app basis, it's quite unfortunate. Happy to hear you have somewhat solved your problem. I've decided to persevere with beatmaker, I can make the auto-looping work for me with the softstep I believe, something I need to test today. It seems to be the best (only) solution.

@syrupcore This is the approach I'm going to use for Beatmaker 2. I'm leaving the x-groups alone because they won't work properly with actual drum loops for cancelling each other out, so... I'll just set a loop running, and then to switch loop I'll have to tap the previous one off and tap the button for the next one (fortunately it quantises to the master tempo so I can queue my taps).
It may be one extra bit of tap dancing I have to do but beggars can't be choosers! And I don't know if it's iOS 8 (it probably is) but I've been having nothing but grief from Loopy HD. I had a full complex midi setup with the softstep for loopy, set up on my dad's iPad with iOS 7, but it's just too flaky. The beginnings of loops will sometimes get cut off for no apparent reason when queuing and switching between them... then play fine the next time... then stutter the next time.
Not to mention when I import loops it doesn't seem to set the beginning correctly. It just doesn't loop as smoothly as Beatmaker. Can't wait for the Loopy Masterpiece Edition though, that seems like a real solution to my problems!

@rad3d I've ended up sticking with Beatmaker (with it going into Turnado via Audiobus it seems stable so far, did some stress testing last night), so hopefully I can achieve what I need with just Beatmaker for loops, and then I'll see what other effects will work (as an added bonus).

Cheers again everyone and merry christmas again!

    Louis
