Favorite Sound Fonts
Hello everyone. Thanks to the great people on this board I discovered a new instrument. I just downloaded the bs-16i and was wondering if you could recommend some good SoundFonts that you use in your music. It's a bit overwhelming because there's a million of them on the web.
The Archano collection is good:

I have some good General Midi soundfonts, will post links later on for you guys to enjoy.
Hi,
Here’s a link to “SGM128 v1.17.sf2” in my Dropbox:

Thanks...
Now we just need to convince Steinberg to include sf2 support in future update of Cubasis
Samu, what about bs 16i into cubasis via audiobus?
@Tritonman2 said:
It might work but adds overhead and there is no way to use multiple instances at once
Sure it's possible to send multiple midi-channels to bs16i but audio returns on one channel.(If there was multiple IAA-Generator outputs in bs16i it might work).
The 'built-in' instruments inside Cubasis can run in multiple instances, that's why it would be optimal to have SoundFont support built-in.
If you use midi on all the Cubasis tracks, you can record bs-16i then set Cubasis to enable midi out to play back through bs-16i. You'll need to drop the master volume, in Cubasis, if you don't want the Cubasis sounds added in. AB isn't needed in this config.

@Musikman Great library. Thanks for putting it up on your Dopbox.
@Maarten Thanks for the link.
@SpaceDog Wow I didn't know there were SoundFonts of old synths and romplers. It would be great to get the whole Proteus line.
I have an old EMU cd I got when I bought my EMU soundcard. I know there's a virtual synth in there with tons of patches but will check if its in Soundfont type.
This "grand" piano from Z-Doc sounds awesome ... At 184 mb it should! Great velocity control, even from the bs16i's onscreen keyboard:

Sampled from the $20,000 Yamaha YUS5, which is actually an upright:

Wow! So awesome! Thanks!
@eustressor Thanks! Can always use another high quality piano.

Hi,
Can someone tell me if/how I can get these SF2 files into Thumbjam?
@Sonosaurus - if you have a moment?
For instance - trying to get:
http://www.freedrumkits.net/sound-fonts/pianos/857-stein-grand-piano-sou
in, I just get 'the import failed' message.
It's the same with every SF2 file I try to import in the 'Import/Export' area of TJ when I choose the "->Inst" button and try to pull in from itunes shared docs.
Am I doing something wrong?
I've never heard (or read) that TJ can import SF2's - where did you get that info?
Oh. Thought I'd seen it somewhere. Be good if it did
.
How does one create / import an instrument in Thumbjam?
Any advice appreciated.
You can import Thumbjam instruments directly through the import feature, that you or somebody else created.
If you wanted to import SF2's into TJ, you could extract the .wav files from the SF2 and then import those into TJ by creating a new instrument. You might need to know some things about the .wav files though, such as what note they were associated with in the SF2 so they can be correctly assigned in TJ. You also may need to set the looping points and some other parameters, if they were not already defined in the .wav file. Bottom line it it takes some extra effort, but goes pretty quick once you get the hang of it. I've created hundreds of custom instruments myself in TJ from wav files.
OK, thanks @Coloobar. Very useful to know.
Do you know if there any TJ instrument 'out there' for download other than the factory ones you can download from the app? I'm really after some good horns and brass instruments, strings and also good pianos.
I just love the playability of TJ (the scale lock and slide of the keyboard, the vibrato on the finger move, velocity control etc.)... particularly for 'real instruments', rather than, say Caustic which does import SF2 files.
I guess i'll start working out how to make instruments out of decent soundfonts I find. Starting with how to get wavs out of .SF2 files.
There's surprisingly not too many 3rd party instruments available, other than what Sonosaurus has already provided. It's a shame cause they're pretty easy to make... much easier than trying to make your own soundfont! I think if people realized how easy it was, more would be making them. I should try to put together a tutorial video on how to do it.
The biggest problem I've run into with making my own instruments is you need source .wav files that are sampled across multiple octaves, preferably with more than a few samples per octave. Many of the free samples out there will provide a sample of just one note, which is worthless for creating your own TJ instruments. This isn't a problem with soundfont source .wav's though, since many of them are not only samples across many octaves, but with multiple velocities as well. I haven't tried making multi-velocity instruments with TJ yet, as that's a relatively new feature. I'd imagine that you do it the same way, but you have to define the velocity of the wav file too, which would be one extra step.
Easiest way to get at the wav files contained in a sf2 would be to convert it to sfz which stores the wav files separately from the config file. You could try this free one: http://audio.clockbeat.com/sfZed.html but I haven't used it. Otherwise there are some paid converters.
Hi. Thanks.
Actually I just had some luck using the Polyphone desktop application which is free. It's pretty cool. It lets you extract all .wavs - and shows you the loop points on each sample.
...and have had success now creating a TJ instrument.
Didn't seem to like importing the zipped sample set from wiFi or from iTunes but it worked importing from audioshare.
So thanks for your help.

Matt, do you have a link for the polyphone app?
When you extract the wav files are they extracted with same quality?

I'm pretty sure the wav files come out at the same quality, yes...
@sonosaurus
sf2 import, did you think this would be happen sometimes?
Awesome! Thanks man. I found a website with some amazing Korg synth soundfonts by after extracting them they take up about 400 megs each!
Wish I could turn them to wav files. But my old PC is not in great shape.
Will share them later.
Need help with soundfont guys. I have many soundfonts that i would like to convert to a single file to use in bs16i. Just like the default built in soundfont containing many presets. how do i go about doing that? I downloaded Polyphone, but i wonder if that will not do what im trying to do. Any ideas?
