Is there anything that Genome can do that Cubasis can't?

Wrestled unsatisfactorily with Genome more than a year ago, then forgot about it. Six months later got Cubasis but didn't get into it until recently. Have seen Genome come up fairly frequently on this board lately..

So, is there anything that Genome can do that Cubasis can't?

  • More likely there is a lot that Cubasis can do that Genome can not. I am not using Genome but It was more of a controller than a daw from what I remembered.

    Genome is a pattern sequencer with a piano roll editor for the pattern blocks. You string concurrent patterns together to build songs. You can trigger the patterns individually a bit like Ableton, no audio clips though. Genome allows you to use finger sliding to re-trigger notes or phrases within a pattern while it is playing. The patterns can be of different lengths. Genome has 16 track lanes assigned to channels 1 - 16 but that can be overridden.

    Genome 2.0, much teased, appears to have a built in synth and drum engine. Genome 1 is strictly a controller.

  • @tedBphx gave a great description of the differences. Main one I'm aware of is as he described: genome is a pattern based sequencer while Cubasis is a linear sequencer. One thing though:

    You string concurrent patterns together to build songs

    They don't need to be concurrent. Each song step in genome can combine any set of patterns from across any track (one per track). You can just build a bunch of loops and bits and put them together in song mode however you like.

    We'll see what happens in V2.0 but otherwise I think @Tritonman2 is right: it's more of a question of what cubasis can do that genome can not.
