Korg Volca Sample

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

Anyone here get this nifty little sampler from Korg?

http://www.korg.com/us/products/dj/volca_sample/

It uses iOS to import samples. There's a Caustic editor for it:

Just curious what peoples thoughts are. I am looking into it, but also don't have an interface for my computer and so would have that added expense. :(

  • Haven't tried it yet. Looking forward to it arriving locally though!

Why would you need a computer interface?

  • I think it interfaces through USB on computer. Not entirely sure how via iOS.

Do you mean to say that the Volca sends its audio down the USB cable?

I think what @1P18 means is that in order to record the Volca he would have to get an audio interface for his computer

    Volca --> interface --> computer

Volca --> computer via USB would eliminate the need for that...

  • The headphone jack of the iOS Device is used for communication with the Volca and those familiar with modems will know what kind of noises it generates...

    Oooh I see. :-)

    Clears that up. Thanks!

  • Now I want a Volca Sample. :-))

Yeah, I'd want to get an interface with midi too, because the Volca Sample has midi in to keep evrything in sync. Pretty sure midi interfaces start at around $100. :(

The Volca Sample is pretty darn cool though. I guess they added song mode too, compared to the other Volcas which don't have song mode.

  • @1p18 Nah, cheaper. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/mio is $35. You can get a 2in/2out for 70. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDISport2AE or the iConnectMIDI2+ (with ios port and audio pass through stuff) for $90. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/iConnMIDI2L Plus, there's always craigslist.

all of those will work with you computer or your ipad. I think the last one is the only one that can be used by both simultaneously though.

  • Turns out the stereo mini jacks also sync, and are not just for audio or loading your own samples. Not sure about compatability, but the manual does say DAW sync:

    http://i.korg.com/uploads/Support/USA_volca_sample_OM_2.pdf

It says pulses are sent and received through these jacks, and if input is used then the internal clock is off. I was under the impression that midi was needed to sync.

I think @1P18 is "lamenting" that (he) would need an interface with audio AND MIDI to work with the Volca and his computer which would add on to the cost of owning a volca.

now might be a good time of year to troll the sales and clearance bins for a cheap(ish?) interface that does both...

Yeah that's what I was saying, but if it syncs through the mini jack from a DAW that would mean I wouldn't need a midi interface.

I was kicking around the idea of buying one of the Volca devices, but it would be a totally gratuitous toy. Given that I have $10 sampler and synth apps that I love, but often forget about, a $150 hardware investment just seems like a more complicated and expensive way of ending up at the same end result.

They look damn cool though - I probably would have looked at Volca Beats or Keys first, but the editing apps available for Sample grabbed my attention.

Ah okay, so the mini jack sync is dependent on an audio signal, and will advance the volca just one step with each audio signal received by the Volca. So obviously it's going to be less reliable and not a true sync, in the sense that it's not really syncing with a clock.

(edit: I think this type of sync is mainly to sync the Volcas together, because the manual also says the Volca will output a signal with every step)

This video shows Volca Beats syncing with an MS-20 mini, and when it starts you can see the Volca advancing just one step at a time, as an audio signal is received from the MS-20 mini:

  • @syrupcore I should have clarified, I'd need one with audio too, because my laptop only has one mini jack. I suppose I could mix and match, rather than getting all in one, but even then it would start getting up there in price.

One other thing, I guess the Volcas don't come with AC Adapters?! Not a huge deal, but just another thing I'd have to buy.

Not sure what you're trying to do at this point but there's a free app that lets you sync the volcas to your iOS device via the headphone jack. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/korg-synckontrol-for-monotribe/id438617344?mt=8

And pulse sync, for me anyway, has almost always been more reliable than midi clock sync!

    I'm not even sure myself.

My psychiatrist... He tells me I'm crazy. I say, I want a second opinion. He says okay, you're ugly too.

No respect, no respect I tells ya.

  • Here's the midi chart for the Korg Volca Sampler. There's some very useful information on the Korg Forums for the Volca Series.

  • A new firmware (1.3) is out since yesterday. Finally, the parameter locks are working as described in the manual ;-)
