Offbeat venues

edited January 2015 in General App Discussion

What is the most offbeat 'venue' you have ever done your muso thing at? My 'muso' rig consisted of my XP-50 & floppy disk box, a Crate keyboard amp & a Midnight Blues mic; mostly I did it for fun, but also being an amateur astronomer I would head to the Keys and the Winter Star Party annually & one year I decided to offer some musical entertainment with songs having themes that evoked space stuff; one song in particular was a lyrics re-work of 'Southern Cross' (part of which is visible from the Keys during the WSP) telling of the magic moments of being there. So here I am on stage, out-of-doors, along the Florida Straits, in front of a half-disinterested array of late afternoon risers (these people stay up all night!), belting out my best... but my cover of 'Changes In Latitudes' got the 'raves'!

You?

  • Ha. That's a hard gig to beat @Brain. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to play very many offbeat venues just yet. One of my more unique gigs consisted of playing bass in a band at a wedding reception. The bride and groom had their reception in an old, repurposed warehouse (which had the most persistent reverb). Anyways, the strange part was the groom's love for all things Muppets. So, when they walked in and were announced, we played the Muppets TV theme. It was a blast! No Rainbow Connection, though :(

  • Nice! I play bass in 2 wedding bands and played at a venue in Pennsylvania a few weeks ago with ridiculous reverb too, luckily it's a performing arts center so even though excessive, it was a good reverb.

And rainbow connection was my wedding song.

Weirdest venue I've played though? Many, but two that stand out are in the produce aisle of a supermarket doing a wedding catering showcase. We were trying to get our singer to say "cleanup in aisle 5" over the mic but he wouldn't do it.

Another was a pheasant farm near Saratoga, NY. it was under a tent, which wasn't so weird, but the loadin was through the woods on a golf cart, that was interesting. And the guests brought dessert, many pies, etc, which is probably not strange to some but it's something a wedding band from NJ doesn't usually see. NJ is known for very excessive weddings, not beautiful simple things like that.

  • Not so much an odd venue as it was an odd occurance. My wife and I are walking in downtown Atlanta when she decides to go into a shop. I wasn't interested, so I hung out with a street musician who was playing an electric violin. I saw he had a guitar and he asked if I wanted to jam a bit, which we did. The look on my wife's face when she came out of the shop was priceless.

  • We always booked our own shows so on tour a few years ago in San Diego it felt strange as we approached the "venue" because we seemed to have passed through the city and started heading to the southern suburbs. Finally we arrived in at a mansion in Chula Vista. It ended up being a bunch of rich, Asian, kid, pop punk bands! Haha totally random! They were very nice and they had a huge Hawaiian Luau, including a whole roasted pork. Very cool! We were decently fed and payed, however, because all of the bands and "fans" were litterally in high school we had nowhere to crash so we ended up sleeping on the beach. We thought it'd be cool to do it on the border so we did. Woke up in plain sight of Tijuana.
