(Near) Zero Latency Audio on Android at NAMM
2ms round trip?! Looks like the mobile audio platform wars are officially on!
Comments
you still need to encourage developer to release on a platform with a 95-99% piracy rate (according to different game developer) ;-)
No wars here, I will gladly welcome my android devices into the studio.
My brain is churning just thinking about the possibilities for dedicated "instruments" or effects modules that would be possible with a $100 android device and some good apps.
One of the best apps ever created is still there.... ThumbJam. Then there is Caustic and a few other good ones.
99% piracy..... no way!
would freemium and IAP solve this?
Sounds great. Probably not for me at this moment in time. All the yearly updates by Apple are making me dizzy as it is. Thinking of switching platforms and starting from the top at this stage sounds a bit crazy. Competition is surely a good thing but I somehow cannot envisage android getting things right. I'll give it another thought when some sexy android setups start appearing on YT in a meantime I'm waiting for the Masterpiece.

I have no infos about music apps but it's the cold reality for games, that's for sure. And that does NOT mean 99% percent of ALL available devices. It's 95-99% from people who play a certain game.Does not mean it's installed on every android device.
That's just the latest article about this topic:

i'm on the fence.Yes,i would like to see it on ios because i could try before buy (full unlock via iAP) and no because i can't backup an ipa anymore. The customer is screwed If the dev or apple decide to pull an app then...
Well NAMM doesn't officially start until tomorrow but it has already gotten out so we revealed today that the solution is iRig UA - http://www.irigua.com
We also announced two other mobile accessories:
iRic Mic Studio - http://www.irigmicstudio.com
iRig PowerBridge - http://www.irigpowerbridge.com
So the android device almost becomes just an editor since the processing is handled externally. Never would have guessed this.
Kobi-yashi Maru solution.
Now if you had just made the power bridge USB A (better yet 4 of them as a hub)instead of iRig custom mini-DIN - and not limited to your own closed ecosystem, you'd sell boatloads.
More precisely, Kirk's KM solution @dwarman - if you can't win, rewrite the rules ;-)
I'm a bit disappointed as I thought the solution to low latency would be a software solution, on the other hand though having external dsp card is quite exciting, opens up a lot of possibilities going forward especially for some of the other fx from the desktop libraries, I like the idea of external dsp cards taking some of the strain off the cpu, especially on mobile.

For real. I'd be clicking 'buy' right now. I don't own any other IK stuff so it's not for me. Is it currently limited to one IK device and one iOS device at a time? Reads that way but one of the graphics made it look like a hub.
The android 'solution' is cheeky. Still, offloading processing has a certain appeal. Price? iOS plans? Other types of processing offload in the future (ala UAD-1)?
Nice marketing blip-blip....passed....editors for hardware gear are available since years....
Wow,what a misleading marketing before Namm,no?Everybody thought the"near zero latency"is a software feature and not a DSP box...
The clue it was hardware was in it needing OTG
The marketing speak really hurts my brain. "As low as 2ms" sounds to me like "it's not possible for it to be better than 2ms."
At 44.1khz, a buffer size of 128 samples is 2.9ms. 128 samples is fairly small (default for Audiobus is 256). 256 is also the default for Logic on a desktop. For audio processing, there's generally a queue of a couple of buffers for input and output. On a desktop, 10 or 15ms would be considered good, if you're going to do anything to the signal.
2ms? Yeah, maybe for "direct monitor" mode....
Stop by Hall A (big one upstairs, not the basement hall where other mobile products may be found) Booth 6520 at the Anaheim Convention Center to try it directly if there's any confusion. It works quite well. Visit http://www.ikmultimedia.com/show2015 for official news if you can't be there.
The press release should have the contact information for developers interested in getting their apps working with iRig UA and learning more of the particulars, message me if you do not find it and are interested.
It was also just shown and played through on KUSI News San Diego (they visited the booth pre-opening) lifestream, don't know if they will re-run it at http://www.kusi.com
"Selected Android devices" !!!
Be wary, very wary. The OS/function wilderness of the plethora of devices could really mess you up here.
I'll stick to ios thanks.
iRig UA will work on nearly all Android devices running Android 4.0+ http://www.irigua.com
