Battery Powered USB Hub
My father-in-law gave me one of these.

I cannot find anywhere to buy them now but it seems pretty cool, and it works. He said he ordered it about 3-4 years ago and never opened it. It takes 4xAAAA batteries. The ones that came with it were 650mAh. I am not sure if they are old, although they are NiMH batteries, but having my Axiom 49, Avid Fast Track Duo, and Novation Launchkey 25 plugged in it seems to last about 30 mins to an hourish. I have only tested it once so far. I am currently testing some 800mAh amazon AAA batteries. I plugged them in at about 12:15. I will post later to see how long they last.
Has anybody tested to see how much power USB keyboards draws while in use or standby?

So it lasted about an hour and a half using my avid Fast Track Duo. I was streaming music from spotify most of the time. I did have my Axiom 49 and Novation Launchkey hooked up and played along with a few songs.
I looked for a more current version of this approach and couldn't find one. As a result, I have use rubber bands to hold together a small powered USB hub and a battery pack via a USB-to-barrel connector. It works but is pretty ugly. An integrated unit would be better, if anybody has found one.
I remember I researched this about a year ago. I believe there may be something in the USB spec that doesn't allow this kind of configuration. Don't ask my why, but I recall that being the reason that such an animal is hard to find.
I will post a reference if I find it.
I only ever found one, it is no longer available, and it only holds about 1000 mAH. It looks like a coaster beause it as a PV cell on the top.
But I use a USB battery charger to power my hubs when I'm mobile. 12 AH lasts forever. Just be sure to get a hub that takes the small barrel style USB charging cable. Belkins do, for example.
i use these things (purchased in germany):

i hope you will find similar products in the us-shop.
this battery pack plugged into the usb-hub lasts up to six hours when i have connected
to the hub: kmi softstep2, alesis io2, korg pad kontrol and an ipad air (no, it doesn´t charge the ipad...)
there are several of these battery packs. I use one of these cables from the battery to the hub.
