Sunrizer xs saved the day

I had a gig last night where I played synth bass on "dress you up" by Madonna and "stand back" by Stevie nicks, among other songs. I have patches programmed into my xio that resemble those sounds, but not exactly, a little too "pointed." I had programmed them into sunrizer for iPad a while ago as well and those sound very close, however I need my iPad on this gig to control the digital mixer.

Last night my daughter found her iPod touch in a drawer, unused since she got her phone. I installed sunrizer xs and used the irig keys with it since it has the 30 pin connected, which works on ios6, where this iPod remains. I emailed my sunrizer bank from my iPad to my daughter then imported to sunrizer xs. One problem- my patches were crashing it. Looks like any patch on sunrizer that uses the multi oscillator option doesn't work in xs. So I copied the patches visually without unison. It worked great, now that iPod will remain on my setup for the songs that need the "Roland" type synth bass sound.

Oh, one problem though, the iPod was very low on battery because it had been dead for a number of months and didn't charge up that much. So, the battery literally lasted until just after the last note of dress you up, then shut off! I played stand back, which was in a medley with it, on my xio. But I'll do it next time on sunrizer.

Just thought I'd share. Sometimes you forget about tools that you already have when a solution is needed.

PS- playing the synth bass part to "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode is a major challenge when it's not sequenced- I have a cheat sheet with the 4 bar rhythm taped to my xio...my brain still can't keep up!

  • Great story, dude! I love stories like this where you have a crazy fix to the problem.

  • When they make a remake (again) of the A Team and need someone to make a special guest appearance as MacGyver I will pass along your agent's information...

  • Done! Didn't an A Team remake happen already? Or maybe it's being made. Nobody ever got shot on the a team, only punched, even though they brought a whole arsenal!

And yes, the band is an 80's band, I'm having a lot of fun. I thought I knew 80's really well but they're picking some good ones that were less known, at least to me. I'm 40, so in the early 80's I was still pretty young.

  • Oh they've re-made it already (hence the again), but in another few years someone will look at Batman and Bond and realize there's always room for a dark and gritty reboot.

  • Great story.

Wonder if that would work with the griffin 30pin dock thing that sweet water has on the cheap? Would let you charge.

If you have a clock or at least a known/fixed tempo during enjoy the silence you could definitely program that pattern into Sunrizer XS' arpeggiator.

  • No clock, played free. It's a challenge, and I need those to get better! Stand back is pretty crazy too.

  • We want proof, where's the audio? :)

  • On my hard drive. I'll post it when I get a chance to mix it. Thought you had me, huh? ;-)

The qsc mixer is very cool, you can multitrack to a USB drive while doing sound. Also can be controlled by iPad or its own touchscreen, so I had the iPad on my keyboard setup to mix while playing. Not my favorite multitasking job, but it needed to be done. I have a generous bandleader from another band I'm in who lets me use the mixer on other gigs. We'll see if any if the gig was worth recording!

  • @mrufino1 what do you use to play the bass sound? Do you get the filter moves going?

For any doubters, it is actually worth bragging about. :)

Wow, thanks for posting that. I didn't play that! That's a wicked sound, I'll be working on that this week. I used a heavier sound without that filter movement. I'll have to see if the lfo might help with that or something. I took what I did from a live version they did, so maybe they layered in another sound as well, but I'm going to try to get that sound you just posted.

It sounds to me like that variation may be oscillator sync and some movement in pulse width phase? Or I could be way off... It's a good challenge!

I used my novation xio for that song. If nothing else at least I programmed a cool heavy bass sound with some punch.

  • Looking forward to the end result. It almost sounds like a random LFO on the filter to me.

  • I found this posted under the video you posted:

It looks like he's got only half the rhythm as it's a 4 bar repeating phrase, but the sound seems dead on. I only saw it on my phone so the picture was small but I'm going to check it out later on a bigger screen.

Also this one, the audio is not the best but he breaks it down. I didn't know Flood worked with them, but the sound is not surprising knowing that now:

I never really knew any Depeche mode until recently, but I'm liking it, they're interesting. Cool electronic sound is always neat, but in the context and support of a great song it's awesome.

Flood did a bunch of records with them. I dunno about them so much these days but the synth sonics from Black Celebration through Violator are pretty incredible.

The Moog video is cool but s/he seems to glance right over the modulation that makes the octaving and the filter dance.

  • I watched it this morning I my iPad and I saw the filter down all the way, resonance up, and LFO mapped to pulse width of osc 2, that would make sense that the waves changing I interaction coupled with resonance would make that sound, at least in theory...I haven't had a chance to try yet.

  • Flood ruined the Sisters of Mercy (we decided back then behind all of our mascara), We turned our faces away, never mentioned his name again. He became the Macbeth of Chiswick High Road.

Which Sisters of Mercy record did Flood work on?

Side note on the side note: There was a (largely tribute) band in DC called "The Sisters of Morrissey." Still one of my favorite band names.

Dunno. I think a 12 inch, but then I also think it was after when 'they' (he/Eldritch) was just 'The Sisterhood'. Many folks (in New York) seemed irked at him for what was talked about as U2's slide down the slope. I think that was more a matter of that game or time being over and kids in the software and fashion industries that I worked in there finding someone to blame. I first heard of him in London viz The Cabs who are responsible for everything, but that only means for some of us there and then they were our Velvets or New York Dolls or whatever the moment requires. Happy, bleak and speedy times. I still hear 'Sensoria' in my head some nights, squashed and pulsing its way up through the pillow.
