Different Drummer update
Most notably, AudioShare support added. That's great for bringing samples into DD and getting DD recordings out to AS. The other cool add was tempo increased to 960bpm, which allows for some very interesting droning.

I sense a cake for everyone en famille @funjunkie27 this afternoon...
Someone else will have to bake it though, since my time is spoken for ;-)
Is it only me? I can get used to DDs interface. It's so uncomfortable to use. I can never remember what does what and it doesn't make full use of the touch interface. Was hoping for an update there.
(Aha, at last I can log in - last time it let me in was weeks ago due to the long-standing fault where clicking one these buttons simply fails to ever log me in.) (…but back to the topic.)
I can get used to it too. I wasn't comfortable with it when I first got it some weeks ago but I've been using it lately and I certainly am getting used to it. For someone like myself who regards drums as a tedious final layer of production that needs doing before the song is regarded as finished and mastered, this is ideal. I also spend more time in oscilab than I should (considering that I can’t get midi results out of it) and the general sample+hold additive harmonic way of sequencing has fitted me well for many decades.
Have you read the user manual or checked out the YT vids @gkillmaster?
Nice bass groove there Flo. Was this entirely within DD?
funjunkey27, I watched the yt vids but haven't read the manual. Yes, I should do that!
Yes...the manual should clear up most questions, particularly when coupled with the vids and dissecting compositions in the community.
Glad to hear DD got ACP - that should make it more practical. I should revisit it. I bought it and thought it was a very cool app but could never find the time/patience to figure out how to use it musically. Watching some of the aforementioned demo videos may help.
Here's something I did with DD at 900bpm and Swoopster, recorded through IAA in AudioShare..
900 bpm
(push for 1k!)
@funjunkie27 that is very scary. The National Anthem of our robot overlords.
What's the best tutorial for this app?
Look for Techne Media's channel on YT. I also have one...
Flo's right. The vids, manual, and user compositions will help get you started, but DD really requires putting the time in to fully get it.
Here's a track, DD only- recorded into DD and trimmed in length...
Best with headphones...
Some interesting grooves in that @soundklinik. Were you using the ABA to chain it all together? Have you spent much time with the operations panel? I've gotten some really interesting results with that, even though I still don't fully understand it.
Thanks Russ, part ABA and some randomizing...
Most of the operational panel features are still beyond me...
Lately I have been trying to make "simple" stuff, like a crescendo snare roll...etc, to have more control and understanding what's going on in the complicated parts of DD.
I posted ^^^ to show what DD is capable of and I'm just scratching the surface:-)
Thanks for posting all the cool experimental and groove jams, guys! I've got some really fun stuff coming up in v3.3...I welcome any suggestion on UI enhancements or where you feel touch interface isn't being maximized. I will be incorporating suggestions from the in-app "forum" too. I wish I could have simplified to interface more but it's hard to reign in "infinite possibilities" so at least what's there has a logical reason and once you learn it it does make sense. The best tool is an open mind. Cheers!
Glad to see you reaching out Peter.
I've posted some requests on the forum already, but I'll add them here, so others are aware.
I would like to see midi in to allow CC's for controlling tempo, pitch, etc. on ext. hw or other apps.
I'd like to see the user manual cover the operations panel in more depth.
I've had problems with the timed recording reverting back to 0 measures when I start recording.
I'd like to stay in the progression screen to test new progressions, rather than committing them and exiting out.
I'd like to see the keyboard highlight the notes of a chosen scale in the progression screen.
I'd like to see an option for DD to receive clock.
I'd also be interested in incorporating WIST or some other manner to allow DD to sync across different devices. That could extend the tracks to 16.
I'd like to see an IAA panel when using DD in an IAA chain.
I'd love to see the ability to run individual tracks through different AB chains.
Soundcloud export from DD would be handy.
Some of this is already done such as: Receive clock; Not dismissing Progression panel.
I'll look into others and could have DD look at note in to change key but need to create a toggle for this. Tempo should be working with Clock In.
Looking at SoundCloud but last time I tried it broke the app but will try again.
Plus I have more surprises on tap with a new "Jamming Panel" but you'll have to wait for that one to develop..borrowing from a HyperChord feature on the Amiga ;-)
Tease!
That sounds great Peter. I'm not familiar with Hyperchord, although I was an Amiga owner for several years. A jamming panel sounds really interesting!
I realized my wish list had little to do with the UI, so I'll add that it would be good to have a bit more real estate for the track lock icons and the visualizer mode icons. I often struggle trying to hit those.
Soundcloud isn't a big deal...just a nice to have sort of request.
@Techne, what do you think about templates for different time signatures?
At least 3/4, 5/4?
Maybe just basic ones for BD, SD? The rest in usual fill in 1/4, 1/8 1/16 notes?
Soundcloud isn't a big deal...never use it with DD...+1 on that as Ross said
I'm working on some new Wave Defaults for the different Time Sigs...something I wanted myself many times. There's so much overhead with implementing soundcloud that I deem it not worth the memory, especially since it's easy to share it with a program that has soundcloud support already. Plus it's one less thing I have to maintain as time goes on and their API breaks!
Easy. No need for SC here. Audioshare covers that most of the time anyway. Better keep DD clean. Thanks for your awesome updates
Agree on soundcloud. Besides, I usually record in another app anyway.
@Techne said:
Why do you even bother with soundcloud????
If you polled it, I wonder who would care for SC implemented?
Just what John and PenutC said^^^
And thanks for the updates, especially with AudioShare:D
As I mentioned, SoundCloud isn't that big a deal.
I thought of some other enhancements that I would like to add though...
It would be great to have IAA for effects on a per track basis. I'm thinking that an IAA tab in the mixer might be the best place for that. That could be in lieu of the ability to run individual tracks through different AB chains.
I'd like to have more management control over the samples. I'm thinking of user created folders. That could allow for better control of the sounds with automation, if the folders could be selected. I'm envisioning something where samples could be moved and copied to the folders, including the factory samples.
Thought I would mention that it is really cool to set the tempo to a very high value (I used 900bpm) and then set the automation to morph all parameters. If you only use 2 or 3 tracks, you can get some amazing drones. Anything more than that gets a bit busy though. I have the automation to reset after every 12-16 measures to allow enough time to hear the changes, and it never returns to the original.
