Casio CZ Synth for iPad Demo and Tour

The more I play it, the I like it, some really great lead sound, still pricey though, and needs loads more presets.

  • I agree Doug, I've been busy today so not spent hours with this but the more I play the more I like it - some really nice sounds with a bit of tweaking. I'm going deep...

    Down the Rabbit Hole

  • I know you aren't pleased with the small number of factory presets, but the original CZ series had a very limited number of factory and user presets. Is there a limit to the number of user presets in the app?

  • Thanks Doug, awesome video! Really like the layering facility. I can imagine making some really interesting sounds!
I wonder if there is a polyphony limit tho.

  • Nicely demoed but nothing much here that seems to justify the price tag or that makes it that different from many other synths out there. I think I'll pass for now.

  • Anyone using this with older-than-recommended devices? Ipad 2 (not air 2) was reported as viable elsewhere, though iPad 4 reported crackly in same source (?)

  • I was pretty pumped about this release, but somewhat underwhelmed after hearing it. Maybe I'll spend the 20 on Gadget instead, it seems to be more bang for the buck...
    Thanks for the demo!

  • If you do not have gadget do not even consider buying this first. There is absolutely zero comparison and Korg wins hands down if you only bought it for the sounds alone not to mention the brilliant sequencing.

  • Well I was more than happy with iMS20 I got on sale, so I'm guessing Gadget will be worth it for the money too.

Yes with gadget even though the synth parameters may not go quite as deep as their stand alone products, the sounds are all Korg or in other words some of the cream of the crop. And there are a lot of those great sounds too. Hell I paid this much for IMS20 and Gadget will give you so much depth to work with in comparison. Gadget is resource intensive though I could only get 4 or 5 tracks on my old ipad mini but the air has no such problems. Still those 4 or 5 tracks can sound extremely good.

  • I'd really like to get this and have been holding out for it, but won't actually be able to grab it until I update to iOS8.

The things I want to know:

    1. Given the hardware suggestions, how does it fare on an iPad 4?
    2. Are there any limits on the number of user presets? The original CZ series had some real limitations there (16 on the CZ-101, 64 on the high end CZ-1, 32 on the rest of the series). I like the idea of a modern equivalent, but I don't want to be crippled in that way.
    3. Most importantly, how does it compare sonically to the original CZ series? I'm wondering if some of the grit is lost from the DACs of the OG. As far as the features, which CZ is it closest to?

The originals are still fairly inexpensive for vintage synths, but $20 isn't a great expense compared to the $150-$300+ you'd pay for an original if it nails the sound and doesn't have some of the limitations like storage. At the same time, there's some stupidly cheap FM/PM apps out there, so it's less appealing if it doesn't have enough of the old school cool.

  • To be honest I'm a slight bit disappointed with this, I would have felt the same if FM7 had preceded DXi, I would have felt let down by DXi, hope Casio give it some TLC, the ability to import CZ sounds would be nice. On the plus side playing live via iPad is better for my back than strapping on my old CZ1000.

I already mentioned the sound comparison between the CZ iPad app and the original CZ synth on the other CZ app post on here yesterday. IMO it is very close to the sound on the original synths.
