DM1 (iPad) Updated to v. 5.0 (01/22/2015)

Just saw a notice of this fairly significant update to the iPad version. I've always loved the U.I. of this app, but some of the samples are crap and it had some other annoying things about it. Curious if the "new Audio Engine" and changes to WAV exporting actually make a noticeable difference. I'd like to use this app, but never really have for anything serious.

The iPhone version was not updated and remains a bit of a trainwreck.

What's New in Version 5.0:

  • Brand new Audio Engine with nice, crisp, clean sounds

  • 64bit architecture

  • iOS8 and iOS7 compatible

  • Accurate volumes for Mixer Effects

  • New Pitch ribbon algorithm (smooth and glitch-free)

  • Live Waveform display for FX pads

  • New export WAV and AAC algorithms

  • Minor fixes and UI improvements

  • Removed WIST support (current SDK 1.0 is not compatible with iOS8)

  • Removed “Synth” effect (not compatible)

  • Love the UI and song mode also. For those of us (me) who have trouble focusing enough to connect the dots of verses and choruses (etc) into structure, song mode is our friend.

Agree on the sounds, but one of my central loves of AB is going back to something when the landscape has changed. In this case, ran DM1 into Flux last night for the first time and suddenly was getting noise I actually want to use.

  • I always thought the crap sounds were that way on purpose. So many other good sounds on this app.

  • Yeah this is a very promising update. I may use this one a bit more now (their UI for the grid sequencer is probably my favorite of any app).

  • edited January 2015

The grid was my favorite as well. I still can not get over how much cleaner it sounds also. I never stopped using this actually, I will use it a bit more now as it will be a nice compliment to Rock Drum Machine in my little drum app lineup. On that topic, RDM should be having an update very soon with song mode as well as other great improvements. Luis says any day now.

  • how does it function on iOS 7 ? I'd like the cleaner sounds, but not going to update if there are performance issues.

Yes, when Luis puts song mode into Rock Drum Machine, that will take that app to a whole other level. That last update did some sneaky useful things, like expanding the number of instruments to 5 and with the interval fill generator, which is AWESOME.

@Martygras - Some of the "crap" sounds were that way on purpose - there's lo-fi and vintage machines that fit that description. But I'm talking more about the 808 and classic drum machine stuff. The samples in DM1 didn't sound nearly as convincing as the samples of the same models in other apps.

You can import your own with DropBox, but I recall it being a bit more of a hassle in DM1 than it was in some other apps. Also, unless it changed, it only per-step velocity control using an accent, so it gets pretty mechanical sounding.

Nah, just need to flux-it-up mate....

Yay and then straight into Sparkle :)

  • It's per-step velocity but it doesn't use an accent track like the old Roland stuff. It's all in the mixer section, there's a button that looks like a bar graph, click on that and it allows you to manipulate the velocity on each instrument, per-step.

I LOVE that section. Took me a while to make use/figure it, but the fact you can change per note length, velocity, pitch per step...esp. for tuned sounds/bass....++

My bad - I had obviously abandoned the app for some while and did not explore that feature. Still not a huge fan of grid/separate interfaces for velocity, as opposed to being able to do it on the same grid, but I was incorrect to indicate that it lacked that feature.

  • Nice update - sounds better, new effects, new kits......lovely jubbly.

Ooh didn't know that, I'm going to muck about with some cellos now then look

  • @monzo I demand the first DM1 Concerto for the Humble Novitiate...

Ah. I have messed around with DM1 a bit since it seems to be popular, but I couldn't figure out why. Now I know... (sigh)

  • I'm guessing the bulk of DM-1 users don't know about the 'automate everything per step' feature because it's in the mixer instead of in the grid where it orta be.

@CalCutta it also has accents, separate from the volume automation. Double tap any step for moar power.

DM-1 is pretty boss. Glad to see it's still alive and hoping for more solid sync.

  • I don't know whether it's just the big buttons that fit my fat fingers, but I find its complexity perfectly simple.

  • "its complexity perfectly simple"

Hmm, smells like a lyric in the waiting.

  • I agree. First about the lyric potential and also about how well they did at making a pretty feature rich drum app simple in use.

Somethings are made too simple though: I forgot about the damn autosave just now and clobbered yet another song. I want that feature to go very far away.

  • Wow... went to see how long it would be before the iphone version made it to version 5. Looks like its on version 2 something. By my calculation, that should arrive sometime between never and when people in hell have to start worrying about frostbite.

  • Is it me or is the choke group not working?

  • Yeah choke groups don't seem to work for me either, iOS 7.1.2 and then 8.1.2

  • edited January 2015

Anyone else still getting crackle on the first step of every pattern ... maybe I need to update iOS again
    -_-

  • edited January 2015

I would see some improvements, like subdivisions, and the layout of the "Song" screen is some...chaotic....

I mean, manage files are, in one hand on the same row like song title (to the right), but Export and MIDI are on the bottom...left. And you have the Play/"Unplay" button on top left, but rewind and loop...on the middle right...

Ok, not a big deal, but you know...and finally, is good you can change time signature along the patterns but, on the "Song" screen you can see bpm, kit, but not if it's 4/4, 6/4...

By the way, every update is welcomed.

    No crackles here, iPad4 64Gb, iOS 7.1.2

I had a go but it was rubbish. The results sounded like a drunken Bill Maynard from the 70's show The Gaffer, tumbling head first into a bunch of broken violas whilst shouting madly for more drink. And that actually sounds better than what I did.

  • edited January 2015

IF i have to get a full screen add in a payed app (IK style) then make at least the stuff you are advertising available.Thanks.

    /rant off

Looks as though I will have to step into the one minute and ten second breach...

  • Updated again to 5.0.1 to fix IAA issues and a few other things, including Choke groups.

But to me this last problem still doesn't appear to have properly been corrected. Are choke groups working for anyone else now?

  • edited February 2015

Choke groups work (for me, iOS 8.1.3, iPad mini retina). You can put something in a choke group on the mixer page, underneath the solo button, hold down the little white button. Although if you put, say, a ride cymbal and closed hat in the choke group and play them at the same step, it won't silence the ride. If you put the ride on one step and the next step is the closed hat, it will silence the ride.

    Updated - 03/09/2015

Since this last one, FX are a mess on iOS7.1.2

No mark on XY pads, on/off switches and dry/wet controls showing wrong values, effect selection switches showing wrong values, automation behaving strangely, etc.

Anyone with the same problems and any news on a fix?

  • same issues on 8.2
