The Arturia Microfuse audio interface looks excellent

Arturia's announcement about an audio interface caught my attention last month. Today they announced it and it looks superb but is not cheap. iOS-compatible, onboard USB hub, high quality preamps, direct monitoring. Importantly, for me: "... AudioFuse can be powered by an iPad..." $599 makes it nowhere near cheap but the box is so featured that it works fine as the main audio interface for a desktop. Hoping for a review from someone reliable soon.

14 Input, 14 Output channels
2x Mic/Instrument/Line inputs
2x Phono/Line inputs
4 analog outputs
2 analog inserts
ADAT In & Out
S/PDIF In & Out
Word Clock In & Out
MIDI In & Out (looks like it's USB MIDI only)

  • It looks awesome, and it can do eveything that I want and stuff I don't really know what it is. But it should power an ipad, not the other way around....

  • Yeah it's awesome but a bit much aye?

  • Does it charge ipad?

  • Since there's no mention of that I assume no but that's an assumption on my part. Disappointing.

@miguelmarcos it does in fact have standard midi in/out ports (via 3.5mm jacks + cables)

  • Wait - weren't they trying to get rid of breakout cables ?!?!?!? According to their keynote that was a bad thing!

    No space left I suppose....

  • Ah, thanks for the clarification, @busker.

  • I guess it's a nice enough interface - need to look at the specs a bit more closely, but, IMO it doesn't meet the hype given it in the keynote videos as being as radical as I and I guess others thought it would be. Expected something more / different.

Think this will be the undoing of this interface: who is this for? People who need ADAT IO don't generally need things like two mic preamps. People who need a 4x4 interface don't generally need talk back mics. People who need a RIAA preamp don't need Word Clock IO.

It's an impressive bit of kit but I'm guessing almost every customer will be overpaying for features that they have no use for.

    Syrupsays: Meh.

The BeatStep Pro however... Holy want.

  • BeatStep Pro looks cool. I wander if it could control a few iPad apps at the same time. not everyone has all this hardware they need to control.

sounds like arturia got too close to retronyms and some of the wej wtf has rubbed off on them :(

You raise a good point @syrupcore. Often people who need ADAT want a set of rack mountable gear too not the smallest box that doesn't really fit neatly anywhere in such an arrangement. Plus, there is some elegance in having cables spread out, not all compact together.

Where's the firewire or maybe now thunderbolt interface? That's where Focusrite might be scoring with their NAMM announcements for example.

Can I hook up both a Mac/PC and an iPad simultaneously?

These are issues that some in our realm might find made this new wonder technology more appealing.

I agree about the talk back mic too. I have one on an interface. Highly useful in the studio where I have a separate mic room. Not so much in a hotel room :-)

Same with the A/B speaker. It's a studio feature, but not in a studio interface :-)

  • Not sure about simultaneously. It has a USB hub on the back so maybe.

    More on the box.

  • Agreed. What a motley assortment of features. And is anyone else tired of this longstanding practice of completely misleading I/O info? If your product is advertised as 14x14, I expect to see 28 holes, dammit!

  • It's more like a hi-end portable solution than a generic multi IO interface. If I could afford it,I would buy it. But for most of us there are cheaper more practical solutions.

Yes, should be totally possible. And it will have bi-directional sync (current is master only) so we should be able to sync it with midiSequencer or Auria or whatever.

  • Thanks syrupcore!

Being a hardware guy, this interface really intrigued me when I heard about it a couple months ago as I got on the iPad bandwagon. I have lots of optical and other gear that can use every port on this sucker.

I've been on email contact with random people that respond to my questions about an ETA and the latest I was told was late February/March. The rep also suggested guitar center would be the best place (here in the US) to course one.

Not much hype around for this almost vapor ware box but if anyone hears or sees it at NAMM, kindly let me know ...

It does, no problem, I own it. It can work as a master or slave. I use mine with USB connection to CCK into iPad, others use the MIDI connection.
You can run 2 synths and a drum machine and it has a midi controller.
Their updates take for ever, I don't know if it's for everything they make or just the BSP...
