iOS 8.1.3 Out Today

Anyone tried it yet? I'll probably update overnight tonight.

The updates include:
1.) The amount of storage required to perform a software update has been reduced.
2.) An issue that prevented some users from entering their Apple ID password for Messages and FaceTime has been fixed.
3.) iOS 8.1.3 addresses an issue that caused Spotlight to stop displaying app results.
4.) The iPad issue which prevented multitasking gestures from working has been fixed.
5.) There are new configuration options for education standardized testing.

Doesn't seem like much.

  • Got impatient and updated. Took 15 minutes to update. Did simple test with AB, Auria, bs-16i, ChordPolyPad, and Crystalline, so far so good. Also played with Gadget a bit, no new issues.

Bummer for me this time(iPad Mini, 1st Gen, previously running iOS8.1.2).

Had access to WiFi, downloaded the update, had about 7GB free on the iPad and now it needs to be connected to iTunes and i don't have access to the machine where my primary iTunes with backups are located until tomorrow.

The update worked perfectly on my iPhone 5...

  • 'no new issues'

Hahaha, so these days we cheer not when Apple fix something but when they don't break it. If that describes the state of IOS we're in a pretty shitty place, I tell ya.

Oh,this is not the first time i read about this.2-3 users wrote it on the macrumour thread ("needs connection to itunes after update").Not want to spread panic but they said they had to restore the iPad from a previous backup http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1841646

@supadom:you are absolutely spot on unfortunately.

My iPad 4 did NOT need a connection to iTunes after update. I just updated, from 8.1.2, unconnected in under 15 minutes including download and started using it.

Also I had 1.4GB free when I did the update.

  • Each time I update these days I repeat a religious mantra, helps with the tension at least, trying not to watch the progress bar, then a sigh of relief if it's successful, if not probably an explosive expletive fit. Think I'll wait till tomorrow.

Updates "bricking" idevices is far too common. Happened to me 3 times I think, since iOS 7. I'm just gonna hold my thumbs really f'in hard this time, I don't even have any ITUNES installed anywhere at the moment. :/

Bricked my 5 on the upgrade to 8 initially. Bricked my iPad on the update to 8.1. I don't mean the old school version of "bricked" where you had to throw the thing out, but they both required not just a restore, but some finicky button presses I had to look up to even make them available to me. And while i'm not an "apple fanboi" as folks call those who think Apple can do no wrong, I am still pretty brand loyal. I'd say my loyalty breaks down like this. 30% Love of hardware, 247% Investment in app ecosystem. While I'm not going anywhere any time soon, the quality control at Apple has definitely made me have some thoughts that I would have laughed at just three years ago. If the music apps start to flourish over on Android, who knows what the future holds. Steve would have been kicking ass and taking some names a long time ago, and that's clearly missed there.

Oh, right, moral of the story for me is; I don't touch updates anymore until there is a REALLY good (and thoroughly public tested) reason to.

  • The big question: Does Alchemy still work with it?

  • Me too. If it ain't broke.....

  • Yes it works.... at least on my iPad Air and iPhone 5!

  • so then some devices are needing iTunes after the fact and some devices are not?

  • Updated my Air just fine, took 5 min or so OTA. Phew! Waiting for the phone now, that one is a wee bit more important. :)

  • It DID brick my iPhone. Fuck u Apple :(

  • It went well and works on my iPad Air, but my USB to Midi-in/out cable (via CCK and powered hub) still doesn't work... (it worked fine with IOS 7).

  • In about 10 months time if this version of iOS is stable by then, don't think I'll be so eager to upgrade to NINE.

Are you serious? Shit I was downloading it on 5s but your comment stopped me in my tracks. What are the symptoms?

  • Just been posting on the forum and my Mini Retina, quick rebooted 4 times, I haven't updated yet, me thinks an evil portent, never happened before!

  • oookay...got me.I'll make a backup before i update ._.

A red iTunes icon with a cable underneath.

I installed ITUNES on my PC, connected the phone, and this time I "only" had to re-download the update and re-install it via ITunes. Didn't have to mess around with restoring the whole phone, which seems like a new minor safety guard thing Apples implemented(?). Had I aborted that procedure, I would have had to do a restore as well (like all the earlier times).

  • Scary man, I my PC can't even install iTunes anymore. So I wont take a chance.

  • I loathe updating apple devices, I only ever do it nowadays if there's an app I really want.

    iPad Air: Ios 8.1.2
    Ipad3: ios 7
    iPhone: ios 7

I think the iPad and iPhone will stay on ios 7 for good. The air for any new ios 8 apps

  • Still on 7.1.2, iPad4 64. If it works, don't change anything...for now.

  • edited January 2015

Yeah wise words but if you buy a new ipad you have to deal with the preinstalled iOS ;)

  • @chrisg that's awful. does the same device keep bricking?

  • I may have to update so I can take advantage of those exciting multiple choice tests.

  • I updated my iPhone 5S and iPad Air 2 from iOS 8.1.2 to iOS 8.1.3 with no problems.

  • edited January 2015

Right. But last saturday it was impossible link my BT Logitech keyboard to an iPhone or iPad running under iOS8 8.1.2, so actually I have no choice.

    Nope, seems random
