Need expert advice from Sampling experts
Guys, here is what I want to do:
I want to create keyboard patches consisting of sound or mix of sounds from various IOS synths, such as Z3, Thor, FM4, etc. What would be the most efficient workflow?
I have BM2, ThumJam, Sample, Samplewhiz, Elsa.
Preferably, I want to be able to select the created patches on the fly while playing live. So I know that Thumjam gives me this option.
Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing most folks would recommend Thumbjam for this, and TJ should do the trick. I would personally recommend BM2 as I like their interface for this purpose more, and I want a keyboard layout.
Yeah, I thought about BM2 but if I recall you can't switch patches fast. Its a open browser, select patch, procedure, where I need to be able to select created patches or presets on an open browser screen. Just like Z3 and Thor. So TJ might do the trick. So is there a way to have all three synths playing at the same time? If so, then that's what I want to do cause I could make really nice sounding patches made up of various synths.
You might want to test how dependable your desired set of synths would be in an Audiobus setup. If this seems to start up and function well, you might want to consider adding the MiMix app to get the right mix. Alternatively if you can control the synths' volumes from within each app you could run them all via midi from another app and/or midi hardware without Audiobus or IAA. A third option would be to reduce the number of synths you use by creating patches or getting patch sets that will allow you to do what you want which reduces both midi and iOS device headaches. There are some apps like Magellan that can run more than one synth at a time.
It might be less work to make or acquire patches in fewer apps than trying to create samples and load them in some setup as played samples. The sampled results might not be as good as how they were when you performed them with the synth. An added benefit of the make your own patch approach would be acquiring more knowledge and command of the apps you already have.
You could have 3 instances of the keyboard sampler running at the same time via-different tracks. Only downside is you'd need controllers on different channels for that.
+1 for Thumbjam. I might make the recordings in AudioShare first. Edit and name them there and then use TJ's Audioshare integration to move them into the app.
Awesome ideas guys. The reason I want to have all three synths running is cause I want to create a unique patch, sort of what you would get on a Korg triton in combi mode. Where the patch is made up of various patches, each making the sound unique.
Mm I love my Korg m50 for those combis for sure and when I karmify them it takes things to a whole new level! Did you ever try karma for the triton?
@Musicman4Christ Mitosynth allows you to add your own samples and add additional synthesis in addition. It has several types of synthesis, might want to check out some of the videos out there for it. There's also the option of creating a sound font from the amalgam of synths but this would have to be done on a PC as there aren't any sound font editors on iOS as far as I know.
I don't own a triton but a Korg Trinity. I mostly use it as a controller now. At church we use a Motif but I totally bypass it and use my iPad running Z3TA. It really blows away everyone at the sonic power coming out.
Reg: Mitosynth, gonna take a look at it. Sounds really interesting.
@Paulinko, good call forgot about Mitosynth. Did anybody workout why certain soundfonts load and others don't, is it down to RAM? Just thinking it's possible to multi stack soundfonts, to create multi-presets on one midi channel, and this way you could mix and match soundfonts at whim, upto 16 if you wished, but that maybe OTT. This could then be played live.
@knewspeak There are a couple of different soundfont formats out there so depending upon which app you're using, that could be an issue.
@Musikman4Christ another sample based approach would be to use the sampler in the Sunvox modular app where you can assign samples to various midi note ranges. You can then use several different samplers to layer your sample sounds but play them all from the same midi channel. Sunvox is free on Windows and OSX plus there are quite a few tutorials online for various aspects of the app.
Thanks Paulinko, I am hoping to use the soundfonts on both iOS and also with my Desktop Plugins, quite a few use SF2's as waveforms, seems like the most interchangeable format to use, your other suggestions I do hope to look into, as you state Sunvox is on the desktop too, this may be a viable option also.
Thanks guys, yeah Sunvox also sounds like it will work. For playing live I need to switch my presets fast. So I hope Sunvox allows this.
I usually don't mess around with knobs it stuff while playing live so as long my patches are the way I like them, that's it. I'm thinking of Sampling my Korg Trinity as it has amazing pads with all kids of stuff playing in the background. The strings and voice pads are amazing too. But its a pain to find time to do that. That's why I wanna be able to it all on the iPad.
I am not 100% sure on this as I've never tried it but am thinking you could switch fast between sample sets created in BM2. You could potentially create a bunch of "Instrument" presets all set to receive on a different midi channel and add them to a new song without any data. Then you could just quickly flip through midi send channel on whatever controller you are using live to switch between up to 16 sample sets (maybe less if your using some channels elsewhere)
