Do I have to update to IOS8 ?

edited January 2015 in General App Discussion

Just bought a new ipad Air 128gb first generation. It currently has IOS 7.0.3. My previous Air was running IOS8 and I hated it. I'm thinking of staying with IOS7 but was wondering if it is possible to update to IOS 7.1.2 as I believe this was more stable for music apps. Is this possible or do Apple only give users the option to update to current IOS 8.1.3 ?
If so, would I be better staying with 7.0.3 ?
I personally only came to IOS music about 2 weeks before IOS8 was introduced but I believe previous versions were much more stable.
Thanks for any help.

  • 7.0.3 is a pretty early version of iOS, if you had 7.1.2, I would probably have tried that with the apps you've got, but 7 was transition time to 64 bit, so has since probably been updated with this in mind, thing is some apps will work better under 7, some under 8, really depends on what apps you've got, also what you want to get, some may only work with 8.
iOS 8 is getting 'better', if you have a fairly empty iPad, may be a good time to update, given some of the hassles people have reported about having to restore the device from a backup. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks knewspeak. If I could update to 7.1.2 it would be awesome. Not sure if 7.0.3 will be better than latest IOS8. It is getting better, so I've heard. May just update to 8.

I never updated my old iPad mini for the same reasons however after getting an iPad Air I updated to 8 and so far have encountered almost no problems at all but a couple problems were fairly large. Sessionband no longer works with audiobus for example but that fix is coming to the App Store as I type this. At the top of the forum there is a Sticky that goes over known issues you may want to check out prior to any updates though.

  • Thanks Tritonman. I will check that out.

  • You can no longer get updates for iOS 7. If you truly hated iOS 8, I would stick with iOS 7 for now as you can likely download a compatible version of all your apps.

  • I don't believe it's possible to update to 7.1.2 without a backup. Maybe someone out in the whole wide interweb has a file to download? I know it's a difficult decision being stuck between a rock and a hard place...because I'm there too! Best of luck!

  • Oh, my brain hurts.....

  • Don't think having a backup would solve it, Apple 'signs' the latest version, sometimes allowing crossovers between versions, as when 8 came out, you could go back to 7, for a limited time because Apple was signing both versions, but under normal circumstances they only sign the latest release, if your device was JB and you copied the signed blobs, etc. for previous versions, you could have gone back to that I think. Other than that it's stick with what you've got or get the latest version I'm afraid. Think this is how it stands.

  • Thanks to everyone for your help and advice. I've bitten the bullet and updated to IOS8. I would have lost too many of my apps by staying on 7.0.3. Fingers crossed that things will stabilise on 8 in the near future.
Telecharge, your link helped me decide!

  • @telecharge I think that's an excellent blog entry you gave us. I tend to feel fortunate with iOS as I'm not trying to recreate a PC based DAW setup on my iPad. I enjoy the spontaneity and ability to connect a wide array of apps to each other, music hardware, and instruments. I remember the days of punch cards and waiting a few hours to be able to get a printout of your program so the current frustrations with iOS relative to what I can do are relatively minor. For people who want a finished product and the power and stability of PC based systems, I can see how it'd be a different story.
