On Selfishness (Røverb)
I have a tendency (perhaps it's common) to get a new app and flog it past eleven. I tried not to do this with Røverb, but am still trying to figure out exactly what I want it to do for me. The lyric is one I'd like to be used one day in a rap style (not my usual thing by any means and not at all the style of this short take), full of self-aggrandizing chatter but with a whimper at the end:

My favorite JGY jam yet. Love it. Had trouble understanding all of the words but loved the feel and the sounds.
I also love the cut at :053—just as his back is about to hit the ground, cut to the woman laying in bed. Moved me both times.
Cool video and a great hypnotic piece of music.
Thank you. Was a late evening throw down. Very rough around the edges, but the putting aside of final perfectionism is getting me further along the trail so going to go with it for now. Always time for polishing, more than finishing. The words were stolen directly from my filing cabinet:

Ugh, the turn around in the last two stanzas. Gut punch. I was reading along... "What an arrogant twat...What an arrogant twat...What an, oh wait, that was all him trying to make himself feel better because he's miserable and lonely... cue eyes."
Always enjoying. Cool stuff
Wholly autobiographical, of course Albeit of a younger twattier version of myself...
Funny. For me this is, being honest (hope you don't mind), my least favourite of the recent JGY music/film posts (which are all extremely interesting/innovative/musically and cinematically good). I just didn't really 'get' this one so much. Maybe I need to watch/listen again more closely.
I really, really like the Orlando one. Just watched this again. The footage is freaking awesome (is that all shot with an iPhone? Surely not?) And the music is really great. The whole thing works so well together for me. I personallly think that's far and away your best piece. But they are all extremely impressive.
I must get back to actually finishing something and posting it!
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 Thanks for the honesty Matt; no point in coming out of the changing room if all your girlfriends are going to tell you it's another skinny dress
FWIW, I think the vocals are the letdown mostly on this one. Not clear enough, not good enough. But that's fine, it's the one obvious part that can always be redone and better (use a proper mic for one....)
As for the little thing done in Florida; all iPhone, only wish I'd had an iPad with me that day, but then it wouldn't have been the same I guess. Better, but maybe not as good as whatever it is, if that makes sense. Actually, not only all iPhone, but also all via the app 'Cinamatic' which is -weirdly- a bit like Beathawk to my mind. Limited to 15 or 30 seconds shots, some filters, but focuses the mind on what your taking and that almost edits the piece for you. Great little app if'n you're ever in that market
Personally, I hate The Disney Experience, saps whatever's left of my husked-out soul, but I made a point that day to give myself a task (steal pictures, make music, edit them together) and was grateful for the distraction. Ended up being a good day and I didn't bite anyone
Nice work. First I've heard, so I', off to find the rest now. So you shot all of the video for this?
@boone51 Not for this one But yes for the Orlando thing.
Thanks. I'm getting cinematic!
Did you edit it on the iPhone or in Premier?
Powerful stuff. Very well done.
Premiere. But make no mistake I am an utter n00b. Just put the pictures in and slice. Determined to get some value out of this damn Adobe CC mortgage
I've been discovering Cinamatic thanks to your tip. It's amazing.
It's led me to also discover Pinnacle Studio (used to be Avid) for a full iOS video editing solution (iPhone as well as iPad). This too is pretty amazing. iOS DAWs could learn a thing or two to be honest.
I'm half way through my first 'pop video'.
It has it's limits (Cinamatic), but is a blast to use and I love the fact you just haul it out and hold the button and off you go....like the 'widescreen' option, especially on the phone. Helps the coolness factor significantly
Looking forward to seeing what you make with and of it....
EDIT: I do have Pinnacle on the iPad as well, but (for shame) have yet to open it. Got bored with iMovie (a bit like GB perhaps, a pale shadow of the laptop version) and so jumped into Premiere, but would value your input/thoughts on Pinnacle.
I have tried pretty much all of the iOS video editors. I have my roots in video editing, and the one I found that actually allowed the most freedom compared to what I was used to is a little known editor called Cute Cut. The interface isn't as pretty as some of the others out there, but the feature set is the most complete in my humble opinion. Worth a look.
In short, Pinnacle is fricking amazing.
Only thing it can't do well is decent text. Especially over moving images. But I suspect that's a limitation with iOS.
It miles and miles ahead of iMovie.
If you like pinnacle, you'll love cute cut.
Cute cut does text very well. One of the big selling points for me.
Oh yeah, and its universal.
@boone51 Thanks for the Cute Cut thought, will take a look.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 The text thing is interesting. You'd think it'd be a breeze, but I notice even in Adobe tutes you have their Grandmasters dipping over to After Effects to work on text....
What was the video clip at around 0:10 sec with JK Simmons? Big fan of his work, but I couldn't place it.
Thanks @boone51
Cute cut is very cool. Certainly in regard to layering a number of semi transparent video clips and images. And the text (which is great) over moving image is awesome. And so is the ability to create custom transitions.
I'm caught now. Use Pinnacle (which I've paid for) or Cute Cut?
Pinnacle feels more pro and has a nice backup project feature plus very flexible video speed settings. But doesn't have the features above and appears to snap to 10ths of a second which is a bit annoying for cutting to a beat.
Do you happen to know what size movie cute cut exports?
Maybe I'll use cute cut for certain special effects on segments of video and import into Pinnacle where I'll have the main project.
Mmm juggling lots of apps... That sounds familiar!
I haven't really pushed the limits with Cute Cut to find out how long of a video it exports. I did find that it rendered those final movie faster than pinnacle (and a LOT faster than iMovie). That doesn't really mean it's doing anything better though. I just find its more flexible than any of the other editors I've tried, and you nailed one of the other big ones. It has no snap. In iMovie or Pinnacle that's a real problem. Don't get me wrong, I think think both of those are very well done, and they defintely win the "best looking" superlative, but Cute Cut wins on functionality for my needs. And the fact that it's universal just seals the deal.
And as far as the file size goes, that depends greatly on your project settings when starting out, and then again on the resolution you choose to output to. Both are configurable between standard/hi dev, and export is configurable between the familiar "low, medium, high" options. And like Beatmaker 2, if you spend a little time with it, you actually start to like the ui better than some of the other guys like iMovie. Pinnacle is pretty cool ui wise, but iMovie feels very canned and restrictive to me. Cute Cut feels like they'll give you as much creative rope as you'd like.
Thanks - yes - I agree. Am starting to really like Cute Cut.
Oh dear - there goes another £5.
Actually on video size I meant the resolution. 1028 would be nice (which is what I think Pinnacle does). I see no way to check other than outputing to a computer (way too last decade for me )
Shame you can't go out to Dropbox with Cute Cut...
Ah, Cute Cut outputs at a max of 1280 × 720 (which is what I meant). That's very cool.
@boone51 @Matt_Fletcher_2000 I see a lot of recent complaints in the Cute Cut reviews about trouble exporting. Guessing this might an 8 issue. Any thoughts?
Haven't experienced those problems here, but haven't exported more than a couple of times since upgrading honestly. Will try it out again tonight.
