Only model air or air2 synths?

So what's this new trend with new synths with specs minimal model air? Take casio cz and the roland sound canvas ios model. These synths/apps should run perfectly on a model 3 ipad. But no. Is apple forcing us to upgrade by changing the developersoftware?

I think it's got something to do with 64-bit compatibility.

The Casio CZ App runs fine on my 1st Gen Mini, but the Roland Soundcanvas can't even be 'purchased' due to incompatible hardware, i have no devices that qualify for purchase yet.

I also have a very strong feeling that iOS9 will be 64-bit only...

  • If I were a dev I would have to make the choice to compromise on features, (for compatibility with older OS's) or put out the best damn app that takes advantage of the latest tech improvements so it does whatever it does better than any other. IDK. Just the way my mind works.

  • yep the question is "how many sales will I get out of the hours and hours of work required to include compatibility for older hardware" You can't blame devs for being practical. I don't think it is at all an Apple conspiracy, just the nature of developers with limited resources.

But honestly I prefer the apps that are built around efficiency "I built this to work on the iPad 3, cause if it works on that it will work on any iPad" I forget who admitted to doing something like that.

Id heard on discchord that someone was all good with Casio CZ on a iPad 3, I wish I could get confirmation - I'd know my 4 is sufficient.

The Digital soft and hard -ware development/obsolescence cycle is just a function of the movement of capital, more of a natural law than any particular company's scheme, no? Human driven yes, with a diversity of human drives in play, and certainly not all of them bad. Though greed is a big one.

  • I'm running Casio CZ app on my 1st gen iPad Mini iOS8.1.3. 2-3 parts play without hiccups.
The 'Demo Song' does stutter in few places, but for me 1-2 parts is more than enough.

  • I think it is wierd that something like Roland Sound Canvas requires a higher iPad when surely the original had a fraction of the computing power of any of today's tablets. I know they also need to run the screen, background tasks, etc. but still it seems odd!

  • When it comes to Soundcanvas for iOS i think it's more to 'future proofing' the app by making it 64-bit only.
The small memory footprint is a bonus and allows for more apps running at once.

I do have to say I'm very tempted to get a new iPad Air 2 to just make things run more smoothly than on my iPad Mini which does have it's hiccups (even some patches on iSem make it stutter), and i do love Korg Gadget but dislike having to freeze tracks, and well, sometimes apps crash due to lack of ram...

Considering how fast the things are moving nowadays i feel it's only natural for new apps to require and take advantage of more modern hardware and at some point legacy support has to be dropped.

I think there would be no bigger problems in making the Soundcanvas run on legacy iOS devices, heck it ran perfectly on my super old PowerMac G3/266Mhz with 32MB of ram, but Roland decided to 'look forward'(with a re-release of an old product) and focus on newer devices...
