Non CC Workaround

Okay let's see if I can articulate this. What hardware and software can I use in conjunction to create a workaround with a non-class compliant hardware and my iPad?

Can I send a midi command to a program on my computer which will then send it through iCconnectmidi to my iPad with little to no latency?

Comments

  • Midibridge app, the streambyter feature?

  • No, need Class Compliance just to get the driver active in CoreMIDI. YOu would yes have to use your computer and and iConnectThing+ or the recent MIDI mirror App (uses just the sync cable and mirrors all ports on both ends), although I'm not sure how one would manage audio with the latter hookup. Latency should be OK though not zero.

Maybe instead of trying to articulate an abstraction you could articulate exactly what you're trying to do and the gear/software you're trying to do it with.

  • @dwarman great thank you! What is the Midi Mirror app? I can't find it anywhere.

@syrupcore I intended the question to be general so it can forever be preserved in thy holy forum for reference.

I'd like to use a Line 6 FBV MKII to change presets and transport controls etc. Example: FBV->Comp midi software(?)->iConnect->iPad app.
    Ya feel me?

  • Yep. Just reread mine and it came off harsh. Wasn't the intention, sorry. I just didn't get the abstraction.

    What @dwarman said.

iConnectThing+ would make this easier but if you have two USB interfaces and a MIDI routing app (or a daw that supports it) on your computer, this should work:

    FBV->MIDI In->Computer->MIDI Route to->MIDI out->MIDI in (second interface)->CCK->iPad

If the FBV doesn't send the type of message your receiving app needs, you can use @zetagy's solution to change the messages received before sending them on to your app.

I don't think the MIDI Mirror app is out yet. Was on CDM a couple of days ago.

  • Ahha! Good thinking..I'll try that! Thanks a million @syrupcore

I didn't see your post as harsh and I most certainly didn't intend to sound snappy. I thought about cutting to the chase at first but decided against it. Funny how text is so open to interpretation. I use way more exclamation points here than I do elsewhere just as a feeble attempt to show my enthusiasm and appreciation!

  • Think this is the app David was referring to but perhaps there's already another in the wild. http://createdigitalmusic.com/2015/02/soon-ipad-will-wired-music-studio-midimux/

    Looks very cool.

  • Now we're talking! Midimux looks incredible

  • The only problem I see with MidiMux is that it does not have digital audio I/O as part of the solution; one is left with only the headphone jack on the iPad.

  • Oh, right. It plugs directly in to the iPad, removing access to a hub+audio interface. Wonder if will work via CCK+Hub but simply introduce some latency.

True. Or an interface with usb connectivity?

  • hi, midimux just went live on the app store!

@TGiG I think I know what you mean in your opening post....

For me, and its not perfect but works for synching:

(Using dongle of course to a USB hub) iPad Pro USB out to Behringer TD-3 (class compliant) USB in, then TD-3 Midi Out/Thru to my Roland TR-8S, which is not class compliant. Then you can keep daisy chaining from there.

The TD-3 acts as a Class compliant translator in a sense. This works for synching the TR-8S, I don’t try to sequence it on the iPad in any software/apps, as i just program all of its music right on it.

But this way, and using the “Link to MIDI” app on the iPad (to convert the Midi Link clock to regular midi) can send my start stop etc to all the outboard gear using the TD-3 as my intermediary class compliant “translator” until i get a real solution like one of the iConnectThing+ things or such equivalent.

Ps - the “not so perfect issue” is that the TD-3 then sends midi notes back to my iPad and messes up my Korg Gadget App’s ability to function in “simple midi” mode. This normally doesn’t matter as i just choose a mini channel in Gadget that is not the same one the TD-3 is sending on, but it does screw me from using my KORG NanoKeys Studio in that native mode that’s just better in Gadget. But this is a whole other thing.
