Hi I think there is a pc version hidden somewhere on the developers site that you can try out, not sure why he has no ios demo version . It sure looks similar to Orion
Ok thanks I'll check that out.
Has both pattern and full length song mode piano rolls for all tracks, all instruments. Automation too.
Check out Caustic videos on YouTube. User videos and excellent dev tutorials.
No demo version because Apple doesn't want demo versions on the store (they rejected my submission). I'm hoping to convert it to a free + IAP unlock option instead.
The free desktop version (PC/Mac) isn't that hidden:

@Rej Any news regarding MIDI sync? Can't wait to sync my Volca from Caustic.
Cool looking forward to trying out the freeware version .
Just a terrific app. Much like with SunVox's free PC version, there are some times I like to use it on PC, particularly when it comes to importing external samples/content. However, it has very robust "open in" capabilities, so you can get new beatbox files, for example, from the website, or create your own VERY quickly on a PC by attaching 8 drum samples and saving the .beatbox file to AudioShare.
Just bought caustic yesterday, instantly fell in love with it and quickly got some ideas down. It sounds great and is easy to use so what more could I ask for, I also installed tithe pc version which appears to be identical.
Loved the ease of Caustic, but tired of the sounds pretty quickly. While very different, I feel about it a little like I did about Auxy and hope, like Auxy has recently, that there will be a good way to use your own sounds in Caustic moving forward. The environment is very fluid and conducive to the increasingly important 'get things done' mantra.
Tired of sound pretty quickly? There is a wealth of options out there to really maximise the capabilities of Caustic.... cool video : )
Everyone's got toast, right?
Caustic is very cool. I like the sounds, and EIP's sound packs for it are great. However, I can't seem to get the hang of the sequencer and haven't gotten anything going. I'm not sure why that is. I recently got gadget and it just made sense to me.
I rember when they both came out for IOS, and I had just purchased caustic ( used to have it on android way back when), so I skipped gadget. Plus , I love supporting good indie developers. But I this case, when I got gadget last month, I find it really easy to get ideas going. Nanostudio used to be my app for that but gadget just clicks for me and I love the sound.
Anyway, as was said, everyone has their tools that work for them, which is really the important thing. Caustic can be incredible with the right musician using it.
@mrufino1I have no doubt that's right, just too chippy for me. Although I admit lack of skill with the PCM and accept that running it through, say, PUSH and FLUX as I have just been doing brings another level of something or other. I love Gadget, and I want to be a snob and say it's because it's more sophisticated, but really it just lets me get at more of what I'm after quicker than Caustic. Probably a style thing more than anything.
And Salzburg.
Yup gadget is just better and faster and not sure why, plus the synths although not complex, sound freaking awesome!
I agree with you both on the ease of gadget to get what I want. I feel bad saying it because the dev of caustic is very open, has great ideas, and has really done a great job on caustic. So, I respect his approach and his work tremendously. It just doesn't seem to click with the way I think, and of course if he had to please every single musician in the world, well, it can't be done!
There are definitely some "chippy" sounds, but there's also some amazing sounds in it. When I have an idea I need to get it down quickly because I can't remember anything for too long, so gadget is, in some sense, instant great sound. I think there's less options than in caustic, and that helps me tremendously.
Anyway, as usual I've derailed a thread, so I'll just say that the tools we have are incredible and in the right hands, any app can produce great work. People made amazing things with far less equipment, but great skills. The same great skills with "better" equipment can now yield even better results.
I bought gadget in the Christmas sale but never really clicked with it. It does sound really good and is great for getting ideas down fast but I just never go any further with it, but I am like that with most programs so my issue really. I have just sort of clicked with caustic and after watching the tutorials especially the modular one I realise that this could be the one to help me crack on and finish some tunes. The bottom line for me is that I have been having fun whilst using it and I think that is the important thing.
Interesting...I can be way more productive with Caustic than with Gadget. I don't even have Gadget on my iPad any more. To each his own I guess.
I used to have Caustic on my old IPad but now with Gadget and the air1 I no longer have any desire or need for Caustic. I would agree it is quite good, it is just not anywhere near on par with gadget I find.
Yes mrrufino I too feel for the developer of Caustic , pretty hard to compete with the likes of Korg on this one at least. That said I now know two people who prefer it over gadget so I am sure there are others out there and some may use both, but yes for most I know ,Gadget rules the roost. Gadget requires more power and storage given all of it's strengths and with an older or smaller storage version of the iPad I can see the why apps like Caustic are used in some cases. I could only get 4 tracks out of Gadget on my older mini for example!
Both apps have one thing in common: Development is sloooow and drawbacks are mostly in details (MIDI stuff, sync, user sample management etc.). Because Caustic is thwarted by the compatibility to Android, I think Korg will deliver the missing stuff faster.
This (small and well-mannered debate reminds me of one of the things I value most about this forum and that is the occasional reason to go back and reassess previous conclusions/judgments. When I (unknowingly) gave up on Caustic my iPad had far fewer resources for effects and sound development than it does now. I also approached Caustic as a stand alone solution or nothing, and thus found it lacking in terms of quality (to me) sounds compared to what else is out there. However, having now spent some time revisiting it, I realize that if I think of it as an instrument or rhythm developer (as I do Figure for example) rather than a quasi-DAW it has a value and a part to play. Brought it back out, dusted it off, we'll see.
I've found myself growing tired of the synths in Gadget recently and have been thinking about getting Caustic. Any more comments on Gadget synths vs Caustic?? I read that many of the Caustic presets that come with the app aren't very good - but there are lots of extras you can download (both free and paid) that sound much better... I love the all-in-one approach of Gadget - and the sequencer - and the synths do sound good ...but like I said - it feels like I've used all the sounds that interest me too many times. And I've tried making my own presets - but found that whatever I make sounds not that much different than any other presets (it's like the scope of sounds you can program in the Gadgets is quite limited) Importing samples into the samplers helps a bit - but half the time it's more trouble than its worth.
@Halftone there are a wide variety of synthesis methods in Caustic and a lot of videos online about how to use them. If you have an interest in rolling your own presets, Caustic might be worth considering.
Same here. I've been looking for an all-in-one since I decided recently (for the time being) to give up on Cubasis + iOS synths. After three days with Caustic I'm really liking it. Gadget? Meh. However, I'm going to give Gadget one more red hot go after seeing all the love it's getting here.
I really like Caustic. Especially the Sampler synth. But I really wish there was a way to preview each patch without having to load it. That would give it a huge push on my list. It's something that makes me wonder how hard would it be to code that. At least in Gadget you're able to listen to each patch instantly. That makes workflow easier least for me.
Yeah the loading thing is a bit of a hassle.
Do you know that when using the PCMSynth, if you long press on the preview button when in the 'select a sample' window (gets an orange ring around it) , the samples preview as you press them? Makes sample preview super fast.
Also in general, when on a machine page you can move from preset to preset by swiping left or right on the preset name - makes preset diving fast
Cheers
Jed
Thanks Jed, super useful.
Nice to hear all your thoughts on caustic (and gadget), I think the bottom line is that it's going to be a very capable app for me either self contained or as an insert in AB.
Great tip for browsing presets jed, thanks.
