The Silver Apples!

Wow! is all I can say about this band that I had never heard until now.

Comments

  • That’s interesting. I’ve got a Silver Apples CD somewhere (my only exposure to them) that’s far more experimental than this. This is a normal song, by comparison. I forget which album it is I have (in the attic) but it reminded me of the less accessible parts of The Residents, only more synthesizer skilled.

Long time fan here. Pretty cool seeing as they made electronic rock in the pre-synth era. Groundbreaking stuff. Just two guys I think, a drummer and electronics guy. Also check out 50 Foot Hose for some more groundbreaking electronic rock from the '60s.

  • I've been a big fan since the late 70s (well after the first incarnation of the band ended). In the mid 90s I was lucky enough to hang out with Simeon and the new edition of the Silver Apples when they came to my city. During the sound check I got to go on stage and check out his gear and give it a quick try. FUN!

  • @u0421793, I listened to a few other songs like "Oscillations", "Ruby" and "Seagreen Serenades" and they definitely have some pop hooks, but that is probably a good thing as it the only way to bring in listeners to hear the more experimental tracks. I think they needed to eat as well!

@pichi, I will check out 50 Foot Hose as well. I would have never checked The silver apples out, if it wasn't for someone recommending them in the comments section of a Moby Grape video. I immediately thought The Silver Apples sounded timeless and not relegated to any specific music era post late1960's.

@MrNezumi, I was reading a bit about their instruments and some of the synths were homemade or modified audio oscillators, interesting stuff. That's cool that you got to see and meet them and also check their gear out. A band that deserves more credit for their contributions to Electronic Rock IMOHO.

In jealous awe of that band name...

They get a lot of high praise these days actually. Here's an article on them in Sound on Sound:

I was thinking previously of naming my band 49 Foot Hose, oh well.......back to the drawing board!

Great article, somewhere in the back of my mind I'm sure I have seen the name of the band mentioned somewhere, but never actually listened to their music. I am glad there has been a lot of recognition from artists who have been influenced by them.

Now, which Developer is going to take on the challenge of making an app to recreate the"Simeon"?

  • Thanks for the recommendation. I'm listening to them on Beats and they have some epic songs for sure.
