Air or Air 2 ?
In the light of the video on the 'good news for Air2 folks' and other comments on the scroll bugs in Auria and Gadget (which I've seen first hand), is the best choice for upgrading still the Air 2, or is the Air original still capable enough ?
Thanks !
Comments
The air 1 is highly capable, enough to do what I need at present . I can not speak as to the air 2.
Some of the complaints and questions as regards Air Two have let me sleep well enough in bed at night without any gnawing need (want) to upgrade. It seems that many folks end up taking the 'every other one' as regards the next new thing in iOS....
No complaints about my air 1 running ios7 here.
My experience of the Air 2 is it's on the edge of glitching the realtime audio every step of the way. I'm hoping the imminent updates to apps like Audiobus will alleviate this, but currently, I think the immense potential of the Air 2 is all but entirely lost when it comes to chaining apps through either Audiobus or Inter-App Audio.
It's my first iPad, so I didn't particularly have set expectations of how it would perform, and I've been inspired by lots of the potential of the apps out there. However, everything I've read or heard suggests the original Air is far better suited to music creation at this moment in time...hoping software updates will soon change that, but that seems far from certain.
Thanks to the OP for posing the question that had been on my mind for some time & the thoughts offered by the rest of you also. Having just about arrived on the fiscal cusp of being in a position to upgrade from the trusty ipad2 (hanging in there with ios7), I had set my eyes on the air2. Thanks to the numerous comments on the forum alerting me to apparent problems with the audio processing I've been having a rethink. As I use it in all of our live sets can't be doing with unwanted glitching, thankfully the ipad2 has been pretty solid on that front & only dropped the odd clanger when I've really pushed it.
If you manage at all with an ipad 2 you would be blown away my the air 1. I moved up from the mini and wow it sure blew that clear out of the water.
I upgraded from iPad Mini 1st gen to Air2 and have no regrets. Have not experienced the glitching others mention, and REALLY appreciate the extra RAM and much faster processor. Cannot speak about Air 1, but these two benefits separate it from Air 2.....
I have an air 2 and almost everything I gained by upgrading from an air 1 ie:ram & cpu boost is lost by the scroll bug or whatever it is...
..The only real gain from upgrading was moving from 64gb to 128gb....
...very dissapointed to say the least...
....it's just like Apple added another year on the wait for a decent ipad anywhere near desktop class music production...
I don't think air1 vs air2 is the issue IMHO. More like 7 vs 8. Since there's no such thing as air2 on 7 I'd say air1 over air2 anytime but I'm a heavy audiobus user. I can't really get my head around IAA. I'm using my mini retina as a test station for IOS 8 periodically and every time I run back to IOS 7 tail between my legs.
Many thanks for your suggestions (and on my post regarding is 16GB enough for iOS music making)
I compromised on both counts and bought a 32GB Air. I haven't really explored it yet, but it does seem rather 'smoother' in operation than my iPad 4th gen.
Yes and wait until you have a go with Korgs Gadget on the Air1 all of those available tracks really brought gadget back to reality for me!
Upgraded from Air1 to Air2 and really haven't had any issues myself. Lighter, thinner, slightly faster feeling in most apps, I can have more apps open without it being a problem, the glass feels better and I like the anti-glare, and you get more storage for the same price (assuming you go above 16GB). I don't really drive Auria that hard in terms of CPU usage (mostly recording an editing raw audio), so the scroll bug isn't a problem for me.
Air1 user here ...and very happy.
Same as Mister Thomas. I am a tart for the latest/greatest but haven't felt that pull for The Two. I think the relative thrill of going for the 128 this time has kept the usual stirrings at bay. For now.
Air 1 here. I bought a refurb from the apple store, I forget the exact price, but I got a 64gb for the price of a refurb 32gb. The price was enough for me to forgo an air2. I'm very happy with it. And savin my pennies for the Air 4.
I love my Air1 on iOS 7.1
Only wish I could actually use Korg Module - which i've paid for (in their 50% sale) but never used .
If I could find a b-stock air 1 with more than 16G running ios7 I'd grab it. They do not seem to exist. So I sit with my 3.
Going slightly off-topic here,
I've noticed some people don't want to update to the latest versions of iOS because of compatibility issues etc. Naturally, that makes sense to me, but what about potential security issues running an old version of iOS ? As I understand it, Apple releases security related 'fixes' in each update - just a thought.
and what about Air1/ios8 ? same issues as air2 ?
No issues with air one that I am aware of.
After reading the Air 2 feedback on here I'm still clinging to my prehistoric iPad 2, and keeping my fingers crossed for the rumoured iPad Pro release later this year...
I think the Air 1 will be the standard until the Pro comes out-
i got an air 1 and I "do no" upgrade to iOS 8.x. everything seems to work fine.
I found a grey import from eBay UK about 2 months ago. Exactly 7.1.2 I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a 16gb though.
Thanks. Yeah, 16gb kills it for me. Your post prompted me to look on Ebay again and I found a few that might be 7x. We shall see! Cheers.
It's really tricky @Syrupcore. All of the second hand ones are on 8 as sellers think it's an asset (what do they know!). I've sent countless messages to grey import sellers asking about IOS but the best answer I'd get was 'should be on 7' which is a bummer. This was my second attempt, first being a UK version bought of some woman who got it in John Lewis but it was already updated out of the box. I sold it for the same price on Gumtree. I'm glad I found it on second attempt as I already started questioning my sanity whether there weren't better things to do than buying and selling iPads in search of a lost IOS. This is where I got it from, maybe you can ask what supplier they use? Blind date I know. Also the more you wait the less likely you are to find the old stock. Good luck and....FY Apple!

got air1 32 today, with 8.1 preinstalled
Just bought an Air 2 on ebay, so I will be able to compare it with my Air. Am looking forward to trying it out.
I upgraded from an iPad 3 to an Air 2. What sold me is the hardware. The iPad Air is 40% faster and has 2.5 more graphics power than the Air 1. The biggest improvement is that Apple doubled the RAM to 2 GB. RAM is very important when running music apps.
Yes I'm aware of similiar figures, but cheers anyway.
I'm more interested in real world performance differences. I know it's off-topic here, but I watched some Youtube videos where the guy switches the Air and Air2 on / loaded up some games, Safari etc. and then said - obviously the new one is better !
