Free Midi Designer template for scratching in Gadget
[Edit - thought I'd change the title since I got number 2 and its attached below].
Hi,
I'm planning to create a Midi Designer template for some crazy modulation of Korg Gadget.
Was thinking about 2 possible functions and wondered if anyone had any thoughts/ advice / knew if this would be possible
- Most gadgets don't have an LFO built in - but I figured I might be able to create an LFO in Midi Designer which I could set at a tempo which matched the track in Gadget (or just have no-synced) and send a midi cc or two that I could assign to e.g. cutoff or pitch or bit crush or whatever, depending on the gadget - and then record this modulation in Gadget. Good for long sustained pad notes. Possibly I could also tie it to a note trigger (so could be used for shorter wobble sounds) - it need only trigger one note since I can change the note played later in Gadget's piano roll. Would be nice to be able to change the wave shape of the LFO (and the rate). I know Jacob Haq has created something similar for Thor.
[edit: I got this done in the end using TC Data and you can get the template in this thread: http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/8034/lfo-midi-ccs-from-tc-data-into-gadget ]
- I like modulating the pitch of samples in Bilbao and Abu Dhabi - you can get some nice record slow down/stop type effects - and it's good for pitching up hi hats and breaks etc... However, it's a bit of a pain to do some things because each sample has it's own individual pitch setting (i.e. 16 pitch settings for the 16 slices in Abu). So my idea is to have a kind of touch screen pitch wheel (the y on an x-y pad in Midi Designer probably) which simultaneously automates all 16 midi cc's up and down and sends this all 16 of Gadgets pads/slices (in Bilbao or Abu, or London for that matter). I'm thinking this could allow for some pretty cool rhythmic or precise pitch effects on samples. For example it would be able to slow down a whole pattern playing in Abu quite smoothly (I hope). You could also only hook up 8 of the ccs or whatever. Last thing is that i'd like the X-Y pad to snap back to the centre (cc 64) on release like a pitch wheel - leaving all pitches 'normal' after the effect. Basically it would be a bit like scratching a record (without the reverse).
Any thoughts/experience appreciated .

Hey Matt, just wondering how midi designer turned out.
well, MIDI Designer doesn't have LFOs! It is on the dev's list of features to add in the future. And he's a very active dev, on a steady update cycle every few months.
So I think that's why Matt went with TC-Data.

Great thread, thanks. With TC-Data running on the same ipad as Gadget, there's still an opportunity to run Midi Designer on a second device. Just wondering what worked, as I'm looking to add it back to my workflow.
Hi @solador78 and @Hmtx
Exactly... I went to TC Data for number 1 since there is no internal LFO in Midi Designer.
But no 2 works an absolute treat in Midi Designer. See attached for screenshots...
I have a multi-page Midi Designer template that lets you kind of 'scratch' (like a record scratch) Abu and Bilbao by slowing or speeding up all 16 pad pitches at exactly the same time - and some other stuff. It's particularly cool with certain Abu 'drum break' loops that have other sounds in the mids as well as drums in - so you hear the scratch in the tonal parts of the loop. It's on an XY pad which 'snaps' the pitch back to normal when you release your finger - and the rate it snaps back can be set too. The X axis can be set to something like high pass filter too - which works well. Or anything else you like. I also have a button below that toggles every pad to reverse, and button next to it that turns Abu's arp on and off - which will give that CD loop glitch effect. It all works slightly better for Abu, but I have a page doing the same thing for Bilbao.
Then for Bilbao I also have another page that lets you mess with the start and length values of a single sample via an XY pad. Plus a button to trigger the sample. This can produce some nice trippy effects with the right sample - like some vocals. I also tried with start and a chunky BPM delay instead - which can be better.
The last page is individually switching certain slices to reverse while you 'scratch' with the 'Abu Pitch wheel' page at the same time.
Results are kind of varied, i'd say, it really depends quite a lot of the source material as to how good/bad it sounds.
I'm happy to share these if people want them and I can work out (or someone can tell me) how to share them .
When I had time I was also planning to do a video of both the Midi Designer and TC Data Gadget templates in action. Maybe i'll just record some audio and share it.
I need to tidy up the Midi Designer ones a bit. And one slight issue is a couple of controls in Gadget (e.g. the pitch of the 5th pad in Abu) for some reason do not have cc numbers assigned by default. So where i've labelled the cc number in brackets on the template - you have to go and map this manually in Abu or Bilbao.
Very nice! I think you can export the layout, mail it to yourself, then directly upload the file here.
I'd love to see that video too
That reminds me. I need to put a "all notes off" button in.
Ok, so attached is the Midi Designer template...
And here's an audio example of me using the Abu pitch control page to 'live scratch' a loop. The original loop plays for a few bars then you can hear the 'scratching' start - which is all done with the Midi Designer template. This produces completely 'live' cc curves in Gadget - so you can go in afterwards and 'tidy up', getting rid of bits that didn't work out.
It helps that the original break has a bit of scratching/glitching in it already I think.
I also have a basic 2 step kick and snare (on London) going throughout and a low double bass loop I created in session band jazz.

The scratch effect works really well in your track. Sounds great. Thanks a lot for the replies and I plan to check out the template later tonight.
Belated thanks for this by the way @Solador78 - just saw it...
video is most welcome, Thank you Matt!
Ha, I just downloaded the template into Midi Designer. I had Wavemapper on in the background, and a little muckabout with the template was getting some interesting stuff. No idea what parameters had been linked, but it was fun.
Cheers
Ha... @SpookyZoo ... That sounds interesting. Basically modulating 16 fairly random CCs at the same time.
@Kaikoo bear with me on the video. It will come.
I've just finished a MidiDesigner template for Gadget Helsinki which I'll also make into a Midi Designer12 version and post later. I was getting some great stuff out of Helsinki with it last night. Especially with the damper pedal set to full.
