TB MIDI Stuff all the way. I haven't found anything that I couldn't do with it yet. Even if you don't design any custom layouts, the built-in mixer, keyboard, and drum pads are very useful.
That said ... I hardly ever use it any more since I find myself drawing in cc controls directly in ModStep and Auria Pro these days. It just makes more sense to have that stuff in there with the piano roll notes.
Hmm thanks @AndyPlankton , midiflow sounds indeed perfect to redirect midi from the device, but it won't send a feedback to the minilaunchpad...
I've used most of them. I prefer Lemur, but only because I've spent enough time with it to do whatever I want fairly quickly. I prefer scripting ability once you get beyond basic controller functionality. I also prefer to work on a PC based editor for the speed it offers in putting together complex controller mechanisms - as I've been creating single controllers that affect multiple devices at once. Lemur's not without limitations - and it takes a little dedication to get into, but I haven't used one of the others without really wanting/needing scripting flexibility.
Is Lemur the only one with scripting ? I need scripting for sysex dump processing, but Lemur wont handle the message size I need.
As far as I know - it is.
I ran into that need with TB MIDI Stuff. The dev said its coming in the next major release, although he didn't say when that might be.
I believe TB also has the same restriction of 256 bytes for Sysex (this may be due in part to some CoreMidi limitations). I thought I read a forum post a while back that TB intended to update this - but that was quite a while ago. Maybe they'll include that in the scripting update, as well.
Audiobus 3. Well uh... that's more of a meta controller for controller apps but still, pretty awesome.
...Any release date ?....
Will there be anything in AB3 that might help with or even remove the need for sysex dumps between apps and hardware ?
tell us more
I think he just did...
Hodor ?...Sorry...
Little late to the discussion but here's some simple additions:
(I'm a sucker for these things. Especially because my phone is so small it's hard to knob twiddle )
KnobLab (http://apple.co/1OXxqvC)
Control multiple MIDI destinations from a single knob. Perform complex controls with a single knob rotation!
Virtual MIDI (inter app communication) or with a cable
Control other iOS apps from Knob Lab.
Connect to a PC or Mac using WiFi.
WiFi Connection
Bluetooth Connection
Connect to Bluetooth 4.0 enabled Macs using Bluetooth
MIDI Layering
MidiMe (http://apple.co/1TKUGgN)
MidiMe is a unique iOS midi control application that makes your music more expressive. With MidiMe you can not only simultaneously and directly control many different midi parameters but also record and playback midi gestures or send your instruments bouncing around the room with MidiMe's bounce mode.
On the iPad, MidiMe's novel keyboard mode brings your performances alive with recordable gestures triggered by every keypress.
MidiLFOs (http://apple.co/1WjBd96)
by ART KERNS (NUFF SAID!!!)
PS BTW Thank you sooo much @artkerns
TC Orbiter (http://apple.co/1sA5h3K)
TC-Orbiter is an app that sends device motion control from your iPhone / iPod touch to any MIDI compatible device, and also can control TC-11 or TC-Data with zero configuration. It allows for the iPad to stay put while the orbiting device twists and turns.
TC-Orbiter is a simple utility, designed to let performers add motion control without moving their iPad. By using the large touch screen of the iPad for multi-touch performance, and the small device size of the iPhone / iPod touch for motion, players get the best of both worlds.
You can also send patch changes to TC-11 or TC-Data remotely with TC-Orbiter. Take control of patch cycling during complex pieces, or simply change patches without menu-diving while projecting a TC-11 / TC-Data performance.
@audiblevideo
Thanks ! I love it when someone brings some fresh meat to test
I think I'm gonna give a try to knoblabs...
@j_liljedahl does AUM ignore SysEx in its midi routing? I'm using TB Midi Stuff to map Roland's tricky SysEx on the Juno-106 to standard CC's, and I need AUM to help with some of the routing. TB Midi Stuff Out 1 > AUM router > midi din out, keeps the CC's but drops the SysEx.
Have you considered trying MidiFlow in place of AUM for the outing?
I needed something very simple, and bought a long time ago imidipatchbay , and it's work perfectly.
I don't have midiflow because I have midibridge, and I didn't want to get a new one.
I thought it would simply pass along any SysEx, but I haven't tested this myself actually. I'll look into it when I start with the MIDI-focussed AUM update.
Yes I thought about midi flow but I'm trying to keep total number of apps low. I already have AUM at the core of my set up and I love that it saves my midi routes with my presets. It's definitely dropping the SysEx. Thanks for looking into this.
Related to this topic: does anyone know of a Midi event monitor app that will record events in the background? It's a pain trying to develop control surfaces in any of these apps if you can't monitor the output events.
I've tried Midi Wrench, Midiflow, Midi Monitor, Midi Tool Box. None of them monitor in the background as far as I can tell.
@gburks - take a look at some of the Audeonics apps - MidiVision and GigRig Midi +. They might do the trick.
Also, MidiProbe.
Yeah, I used MidiProbe for this in conjunction with tb midi stuff. Not the easiest thing to use, but it did the job. I think you had to enable an option for it it to run in the background. I don't think it was on by default.
Pretty sure midi wrench will monitor in the background. If not, midivision and it's frustratingly non-rotating UI will definitely do it. Sideways.
I bought MidiProbe, and it is monitoring CC in the background from TB Midi Stuff, but not SysEx. So I bought MidiVision... Same story. Really strange... I am sure that I have both set to monitor SysEx. I literally have two messages on one slider (CC and SysEx). My synth responds to the SysEx so I know it's sending, but neither monitor can see it.
Sorry to say that (but as I don't understand either why you couldn't catch sysex) but did you activate with midivision "run in background" option ?
Just in case...
Yes
Maybe there is an issue with TB Midi Stuff pushing SysEx to virtual midi ports? See my comment earlier in this thread about AUM not passing SysEx through its router.
Strange my synth definitely responds to TB's SysEx when pointed to the physical midi out din port. But none of these apps seem to see it.
@gburks
What's your setup ? Iconnect Audio 4+ ?
Midi over USB break sometimes, needs to disconnect the lightning port, then replug, or a reboot of the soundcard.
Or are you saying that you have just a usb midi interface, and the midi out connects to your hardware, but midivision can't see getting out from your midi out ???
