Jam Maestro V3.1 released - on sale at 20% off
Version 3.1 update just went live on the App Store a few hours ago. Main features include now being able to export your tabs out to PDF or txt file, and also import/export to MIDI file. Full update details below:
- Export tabs to PDF/TXT file!
- Export to midi file.
- Import any midi file as guitar tab.
- New strum speed panel, ability to precisely set the strum speed in the tab manually rather than having to strum the desired speed live. Can now also adjust the strum speed of a group of selected notes/chords simultaneously.
- Pitch bend can now bend up to 2 semitones instead of 1.
- Pitch bend made more sensitive so can perform a vibrato effect.
- App now registers support of file types '.mid', '.jam', '.jamzip', '.jmdzip', '.jmdmidi' - all which can be opened directly from external apps via 'Open in app'. Useful for opening a midi file from within another app, or opening a .jam file from the Mail app that someone has sent to you.
- All files now have a little mail icon next to them so you can email them directly from within the app.
- Can now change between instrument types without reloading the instrument, eg. Guitar -> Midi/IAA instrument while still preserving the created tab. Useful for when assigning instruments to tracks loaded from a midi file.
- Bass guitars being controlled by a midi controller now respond on 1 octave lower (C1 / midi note 24 and above).
- Critical crash bug fixed when using effects.
Also stuck the app on sale at 20% off for a limited time.

Splendid news on the 2 semitones PB ! You know, it actually feels weird knowing that we were talking about the pitch bend thing late last year and now here we are with the update. Thanks so much for listening, I'll be purchasing this and trying it out tonight. Will be in touch with feedback. All the best
Great to have tab export and midi import! A question - when it imports a midi file, why would it choose 13, 15 and 16 on the D, A and E strings, when the usual option would be to be 4, 5 and 6 on the B, G and D strings? Wondering if there is a way to set it to choose the lowest possible fret position? Also, it would be great if there was an option to change the string of a note.
@NathanJonTillett By the way you talked I assumed you already had it! Unless you mean 'update' rather than purchase
@Fitz The question is though, what works best for most situations? There is a series of logic to determine which string to apply a midi note too. Right now the logic goes:
So assuming you never get to step 3, go back and reorder everything, then the original preference will be to start on the lowest string and whatever fret that relates to. The question is, do you think it is more correct to select the lowest possible fret as preference over the lowest string or not? What if there is a song which is really on high frets and the app chooses to put it on lower frets/higher strings, surely the incidence if which is better is going to be roughly even in the wild? Open to suggestions/persuading me otherwise though
What do you mean by option to change the string of a note? Do you mean batch wise, as in selecting a whole bunch of notes and attempting to shift them them up or down between strings at once? Otherwise surely that option is just unselect the original note, then select the new note on your preferred string?
I only tried the lite version but knew I couldn't use it for solos with the existing PB range. That's now solved so It's now purchased and nuzzled in on my Air 2. Looking forward to having a play tonight
Ahhh got it Hope it suits your tastes!!
@JamMaestro - Wow, this update completely surprised me, but is much appreciated! The tab export feature was something I asked about a long time ago but had no expectation of it being implemented any time soon. It's really well done, and has me thinking about how I may use the app as a compositional tool.
Also thought it was cool that it opens MIDI files and converts them to tab - what a cool concept! Free MIDI files are available everywhere if you want a basic rough sketch of a song, but JamMaestro now basically converts them to guitar tab AND acts as a de facto MIDI editor, too.
One thing I have struggled with in JamMaestro - is there any type of quantization feature, or is that counter to the whole logic of how it works with the tab interface? By quantization, of course, I mean a feature where it will sort drum hits (or guitar notes, I suppose) to the nearest 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 note, etc. The drum kits in JM are terrific, but my timing on touch screen tends to be a bit off, and I find it difficult to do things like moving a mistimed kick drum hit to the first beat of a measure. Thanks!
@StormJH1 yeah the midi import actually surprised me how well it worked. It was a magic moment the first time I got it working, I opened up a midi of the James Bond theme and to my surprise the app didn't crash. Then I went into the tab and all the notes were there, and then I pressed play and it played the whole song and it sounded perfect! I was gobsmacked.
When recording, all quantization is locked to 1/16 notes yeah. So do you normally enter drums by recording them in live rather than inputing them straight into tab then?
@JamMaestro - Not necessarily - I do use the grid to program them on occasion, but I'm not a drummer originally, so drum tab is a little less familiar to me. The only other app that comes to mind that uses an interface like that is DrumStudio by Rollerchimp, which is an older app but still one of the better acoustic drum apps, IMO.
So your response kind of answers my question, which is that I'm better off working from the grid as opposed to trying to live tap out the parts.
As for JamMaestro as MIDI player, yeah, I was surprised too! I tried out the Saved by the Bell theme (which I had in AudioShare for some reason). It pulled up probably 10 different tracks and knew that some were bass, drums, etc. One of the instruments sounded off, but that was likely the MIDI file, not your app.
MultiTrackStudio, a $30 DAW for iPad, does a similar thing where you can open up a MIDI file and basically have a ready-to-go backing track (with GM instruments). Pretty cool that JamMaestro does it as well now (and on iPhone!), and it now appears to have the capability to draft guitar sheet music converted from any MIDI file. Brilliant.
great update...
i use your app bittersweetly... while at work, I craft melodies, riffs and ideas only to never complete them due to only 24 hours being in the day... alas i say alas
Amen to that. I think a lot of us guitar players wish it was a DAW with an audio track for creating tracks to "nest" guitar parts into later. Of course, you CAN do that in reverse, by sketching out songs and playing JM into a DAW using AudioBus. But that's not what it's meant to be - it's for creating ideas, much like you use it.
Now that it exports to MIDI file, I do wonder what you can running it into other apps, including the iFretless stuff. I'll probably be re-installing it on my (very crowded) iPhone due to this update!
@JamMaestro. Yes I would assume it's quite difficult to make rules that fit in every situation, and you must find one that suits most. That's why my request for change string (note by note), as in maybe a short cut - up arrow, down arrow.
I tried to import a midi file. Attached are 2 pictures of the first bar. I did redo this (the second picture) but it took some time.
If everyone is fine with the rules as is that's fine, just wondered.
@Fitz do you think you could email me the midi file that created that? Will be useful in the future to use as a test bed if I do some optimizing.
david[at]jammaestro.com if possible please.
Right! Yea i need to upgrade to 128+ something I wait until the 6s or the next iPad to remedy our dilemma
@JamMaestro Well, I had a play around last night and was impressed. Bending strings 2 semitones on the acoustic sounds very sweet and I'm able to pull off some controlled vibrato too, nice job !
Sometimes my right hand palm touches the strum button by accident while playing but that's just something I'll have to watch out for.
I also tried out using Bias and Tonestack as IAA amp effects and the result was pretty amazing, I'd need to spend some time fiddling with this though. One thing I notice is that the 2 semitone PB confuses IAA instruments. I tried controlling Thumbjam (and others I cant remember now) but when you bend past the 1st semitone the note jumps back to the start rather than continuing to bend up. I made sure to match the PB range in Thumbjam.
Geosynth crashed completely, I think Sunrizer did too.
The other thing I notice is that the built in effects don't work once an IAA effect is in use but that's no sweat.
Anyway, thanks for a great update, top job and great value, I've only scratched the surface of this, had fun playing with the soundscape kits too !
Cheers
Nathan
@NathanJonTillett ahh yeah I found that bug a couple of days ago too (the midi pitchbend past 1 semitone one). Fixed that up yesterday so it'll be corrected in the next update.
re: the Geosynth/Sunrizer crash, not tried Geosynth since I don't have it, but I assume its the same problem as Sunrizer. Can't work how to fix it at the moment, theres something about Sunrizer that spazzes out Jam Maestro's buffer size when you load it, causes it to jump between 256 and 512 buffer size constantly until it crashes. A work around for now I have found is just to open up another app before you open Jam Maestro (say, Audiobus) so that the other app is the one that has control of the buffer size (the first app you open is the one that gets to dictate how large the buffer size is). That way when it tries to make Jam Maestro change buffer size all the time Jam Maestro just ignores it. No idea what can be causing this though or why its only Sunrizer that suffers from this issue.
Just checked and the built in effects definitely work for me with an IAA effect connected. What are you doing exactly? I tried connecting EchoPad with a distortion effect applied and activating the Jam Maestro delay effect and both worked fine...
How do you find the vibrato control compared to GB, need any tweaking?
Ah that's interesting about the buffer size control and thanks for the workaround tip !
Geosynth has always been troublesome for inter app stuff anyway. A shame as it's lightning fast and has a really good patch called "Bakers Axe" which gradually drifts into feedback/harmonics if you hold down a note long enough. Only app I know of that does that.
I tried using bias and also tonestack as IAA effects. When connected, I couldnt get the built in delay and reverb effects to work, turning on and off had no effect. Weird.
I found that using the "acoustic" instrument was best for use with IAA amp effects, you wouldnt want to send an already distorted sound like "epic lead" into jamup or bias ! Ultimately it would be cool to have a completely clean/dry lead electric guitar instrument for this purpose, preferably with the natural sustain and decay of the instrument. The "bright clean" was bit too high treble to use although I haven't tried the built in EQ yet.
Vibrato was really good, quite natural to use and I liked the string visual too. Is there a way to turn off the note "wobble" animation ? Occasionally a square note icon would appear stuck "left behind" in its pitch bent position.
This was just my observations on a half-hour play. Need to spend more time with it. I'm in the middle of recording an album with the band right now but when that's done I'll get back to solo stuff. Hopefully I can use this great app in a song !
Rather than turn off the note "wobble" it would be better if I work out how to replicate that bug where the note gets "left behind", I've seen it a few times but haven't been able to work out exactly what scenario it happens. If you manage to reliably get it to do that let me know!
Would be cool to have the dry samples in there yeah, but if I was going to do that I wouldn't want to do it half hearted. Would rather have some proper amping effects in there so someone didn't have to rely on a third party app to get any use out of it. Unfortunately I don't think its too straight forwarding to do your own amp modelling !
Hi again, sorry for the delay in getting back. Haven't had chance to get back on it but I think the "left behind" bug might have been happening when bending a note and accidentally touching an adjacent note (either side) while fully bent at 2 semitones.
Nice, I just worked it out. Its almost what you said, what you have to do is bend the note, then whilst holding the bend touch the position where that notes resting position is. This leaves it the bent note stuck. Will get it fixed in the next update.
