4gb vs 2 gb app size

Apple has increased the maximum size of an ios app from 2 gb to 4gb.
I guess thats good news for auria pro, cubasis and the other DAW's?

  • Assuming you want a lot of included content, sure. For people with 16GB devices that don't want the content, maybe not. :)

Cubasis is only shipped as 316 mb so no not really. Cubasis 2 is still only a rumor but time will tell.

  • Even for folks like me who have 32 Gb devices this may be a bad news... Developpers sometimes seem to think that people want musical apps with tons of included loops and sounds that you cannot delete, but I'm not part of these people (mostly because I prefer using my own sounds to make music) and therefore I hope this maximu size update will not give bad ideas to developpers...
    Peace.

  • I'm hoping that this will not result in apps including 3.95GB's of 'loops' or other content...

My personal opinion is that all included content including 'demo projects' should be in form of optional downloads to keep the app-sizes smallish. Prime examples of bloated apps are Cubasis, Beatmaker 2, TableTop, iMPC & iMPC Pro and most other 'Rompler Based' apps.

Best solution would really be if all apps made their downloadable content available thru web-downloads and added support for AudioShare, thus we could keep all content in one place and have access to it from all our other apps.

Sorry to disagree but Cubasis is not bloated , in fact it has a fairly small footprint! Less than a quarter of the original allowed number and we'll under 1/8 of the new allowed number. Yes it has drum loops shipped that I would get rid of but the file size is not large at all for such a massive and important app. The complete package is only 317 mb.Ponies and unicorns? Really?

I just took Cubasis as one of the examples, but if you look at the other apps it's tons of included content while the app could easily be kept smaller. Beathawk is one of the more recent 'bloated' apps.

I have no storage issues myself but I can imagine the frustration of people with smaller storage especially 16GB or 32GB iPads/iPhones especially when there is little to no practical use for the included content.

Most of us I presume already have our own collections of samples and sounds that we simply need a 'host app' for.

I personally prefer apps where I can create my own new samples, loops and sounds to play with.

I can already see companies like IK Multimedia releasing 'Sample Tank Complete' with all content included in the install...

  • I am fairly sure if a sample playing app like Beathawk shipped without samples the complaint departments would all be working overtime heheh. Still I am mystified why some samples are not able to be removed I agree.

  • The apps could on first launch ask to download the content if the user wishes.

I can think of at least one reason why apps can't delete included content and it has to do with the fact that an app is not allowed to modify the content of itself for safety reasons. This is partly because when you do over the air updates only the changes to the app are downloaded, and if content was missing or the apps content is changed the update will fail and would need to be downloaded again.

Thus the only way for an app to be able to delete included content is if the included content is downloaded after that app is installed.

  • point taken, I do like the way you think.

  • I would love a more complete set of accordion and clarinet samples in beatmaker 3. The samples included already are amazing but I'd love multiple layers and articulations.
There's no way I'd want to delete those, they're incredibly realistic... ;-)

  • I know for a fact that johnnygoodyear would like more cowbell samples!

  • Can't get enough cowbell :D

  • This forum really is an amazing gathering place for both users and actual developers of iOS music apps. It seems like the vast majority of developers (from the bigger companies to the indie devs) make at least an occasional cameo on this site. If they've read even 15 minutes of content here, I'd think by now they have to know that: (a) Storage space remains a HUGE problem on Apple devices; (b) Many iOS musicians still use older legacy devices; (c) Excessive file size is frequently cited as a reason why apps are not purchased, or why they are deleted shortly after purchase; (d) Apps that are deleted due to size are less likely to generate future revenue with IAP content.

It should be "bad" news that developers are now allowed to use up to 4GB for an app. To me, it's non issue at the present time, because I've never installed/kept a music app that was 1GB in size, let alone 2 or 4GB. 16GB iPads have like 13GB of usable storage space, and that includes not just music stuff but anything else you might have on the device, like FB/Twitter, pictures, etc. There just isn't room.

    Good point.
