(Tutorial) Record digital audio straight from iPad/iPhone to Mac using only a Lightning cable
For those who aren't aware, here's how to record digital audio from an iDevice (iOS 8) straight to a Mac (OS X 10.10) using the standard lightning cable.
1) Open Quicktime
2) File > New Audio Recording
3) Click the arrow next to the record button
4) Select the iPad/iPhone as your source
5) Select High (mp4) or Maximum (uncompressed aiff)
6) Hit record and start playing audio on your device (You must move the volume slider below to hear audio)
7) Stop when done, and save the file.
Hope this helps, this will record whatever is coming out of your device, Audiobus or IAA are not required.

I do wish Apple could update the 'drivers' so that the iOS device would show up as a regular Audio Input and not just a 'Video Camera'
It would be an absolute blast if there was an option to select how the iPad/iPhone shows up when attached to a computer...
MassStorage for Finder/Explorer access to all 'iTunes Shared' folders from all apps that support it.
(I'm still hoping Apple will provide us with a built-in 'File Provider Extension' that shares all 'iTunes Shared' folders and makes them available thru the standard iOS File-Picker and well, release 'Finder' for iOS...).
Audio/Midi Interface (Line In/Out + Midi Input/Output) for Logic Pro X or other DAWs
This should also be applicable when connecting a lightning cable between iOS-Devices.
When connecting the iPhone to the iPad using CCK the iPhone acts like a camera, it would be totally rad to have it work as a Audio & Midi In & Out too...
+1 on that @Samu and thanks for the post @busker.
That's really cool! Unfortunately the latency is a little too high for real time playing with thumbjam or sound prism. By the way I hear audio while playing when I turn up the volume slider at the bottom, which defaults to silent.
The latency seems to be pretty 'device-dependant'.
I have noticeably lower latency on my iPhone 5 when compared to 1st Gen iPad Mini.
It's the same kind of latency/lag i get when using AirPlay-Mirroring so this can definitely be improved by Apples with better more optimised drivers.
Considering the 'Music Focus' on the advertising lately I hope Apple starts to see the 'iPad' as a real instrument and give it also priority it deserves when connected to a computer too...
Has anyone heard anymore about midimux? It was supposed to be out in a matter of days last week but I haven't seen any signs of it. Supposed to do the same kind of thing with just a lightning cable to a mac.
@Bootsy MIDI LE now does this too (and bluetooth as well); it's available in the appstore for free.
@Munibeast thanks for the volume clarification, I updated the original post with the info.
@busker does midi le have to have ios8 and the latest OS? I'm still ios 7 and mavericks on my mac.
I tried it with my iPhone 6 into a hackintosh. Latency felt pretty high to me. I'll see how it compares with iPad mini 2 and macbook pro.
@Bootsy good question, the app was originally midi over Bluetooth only hence the iOS 8 requirement, but I'm not sure if the USB functionality will work with iOS 7. Might be worth a try.
As far as the OS X side, Mavericks should be fine as the minimum is listed as 10.7.
Thanks@ busker! It's free might as well try it.
Won't let me download the app as it is ios8 only. Guess I wait for midimux.
Latency is still way too high for 'real-time' usage, on the 1st Gen iPad Mini it's close to 1 second while on the iPhone 5 i get around 1/2 second, I'm recording with my MacBook Air...
I know this can be made to work, if there is a will at Apple to make it work, it's not a hardware issue.
You can always download the app to iTunes on a computer and then add it that way...
@Bootsy I noticed the midimux site is down which is strange.
Matt the Midi LE dev is working on an update to support iOS 7. He said eventually he might get a windows version and might even support Mac OS 10.6.8 which would also be super rad! And all of this for free?! Insane!
