A lot of the problem with western civ is the difference between need and want.

No, the problem with modern Western civilization is dirt cheap money that is being lent out by banks at artificially low interest rates. It distorts peoples concepts of the value of things. You just go out and buy things on the spur of the moment (in the case on consumer products, ipads, or clothes). Or you go out and buy ridiculously over valued things because you think you will not lose value (in the case of real estate). The fact that its being purchased on credit cards and not hard cash that you just got from this months pay cheque or the fact that its being financed by a bank you you wont actually be the real owner for it for another 10 to 30 years is placed in the back on peoples minds and they don't take it as seriously as they should. But I am afraid thats sort of the way the world works today. You don't ever own anything, the bank does, and the name of the game is you hope to reach zero by the time you pass away.

But back to technology. I try to keep the old version and use it as much as its usable but things are done by vendors to ensure you are forced to upgrade. Some of it is justifiable. Some of it is not. I really liked my old PowerPC based laptop setup with Logic 7. I spend a lot of time learning how to use it and it worked for what I needed it for. The iPad has opened up a whole new landscape in both mobililty as well as interface use. No more mouse and clickety click and a new very functional touch screen functionality has made a huge difference in workflow and IMO justified the purchase price of the device. It's not just a media consumption device.

The iCar will probably use gorilla glass on those optical see thru' shields @samu so that the windshield will be lighter :-) (Just watched these videos recently - it's an ad really, but it's quite informative about glass ;-) The second one demonstrates how using gorilla glass on windshields works but it's worth watching both)

On top of personnel debt US citizens have an additional 18 trillion dollar national debt. That does not count outstanding obligations such as social security, Medicare govt. pensions ect.. When totaled the debt outstanding has reached over 70 TRILLION dollars for just the United States alone and it continues to grow! However the banksters and arms merchants are doing fairly well.

Journalist: What do you think of Western civilization?

Gandhi: I think it would be a good idea.

  • Left the iPad hooked up all night long. This morning, was cold. Dead. No charging. I think when the battery drained out completely, It may have damaged the battery all the way. Weird thing is that never had any warning signs. I guess since we never let it drain once it did, that was it. I guess I will have to take it in for diagnosis. Might have to have the battery replaced. I hope that was the problem though. Man one month after the year warranty... Really bummed at apple. But trying to stay positive.

I accidentally drained mine a couple of times, and it seemed to take days to recharge and then only held full charge for about 30 mins before dying again. In the end I did an iOS update which seemed to cure it completely, though I was running a very old version at the time.

Have faith. I got my well over 2 year old iPhone 5 replaced with a completely new unit after the old battery got swollen, it was a 'warranty issue'...

You should be covered anyway even if it's out of warranty, in the UK hardware should work for at least a few years and manufacturers obliged to replace them if they don't.

Hmm, wonder what would happen when the cars front facing cameras detect 'indecent' objects or activity?

    • Extreme detour guided by real-time satellite image-tracking with optional street-view so the driver won't be exposed to bad things :D
    • 'Bad' objects will automatically be masked by the onscreen HUD with a slight risk of peekability (which would not be a problem since it's a 'self driving' vehicle).

This is the best definition of a first world problem I think I've ever come across. Mrs. Goodyear is throwing an accursed Oscar thingie tonight and I shall try this line out over canapés etc.
