A small device that lets me use a USB MIDI keyboard while also charging the iPad?

  • Yes that's the original iRig MIDI which I use to sequence 5-DIN MIDI equipped gear from the iPad.

We need an inexpensive, compact solution for USB only MIDI.

  • I was looking at the irig midi 2 but the not charging put me off. However on the Q & A on ik's website they hinted at a solution for just this and I think more coming in the next few months.

  • Just found an irig power bridge. Looks like it charges the ipad and allows any ik product to plug into it. So coupled with the midi 2 you get full size in out and through and charging for about £120. I'm giving it a lot of thought.

You might want to check out the iconnectmidi 2.

  • I ended up getting iConnectAudio4+

  • As a jerry-rig solution, I just use Apollo Bluetooth MIDI thru my phone while the Pad is charging.

My solution is to use an iPad with an Apogee Duet IOS (which charges the iPad) and take advantage of Apple Bluetooth MIDI with a device called the PUC+ ->

    • $99 USD
      • Runs off of 2 AA batteries or USB power (so, batteries aren't absolutely required)
      • Comes with a OTG cable that allows you to simultaneously connect USB power and a USB keyboard (again, no batteries)
      • 5-pin MIDI port

I am in same boat. Looking for something. It turns out my old Edirol UM-1S USB to midi adapter does not work with iPad & Camera USB adapter- -- and I might be in the market for a new USB keyboard.

My Edirol UM-1X does. I just have to switch the switch that is unreadable to the setting that makes it work.

I love it. I think every musician ever has had one (or 15) of those switches.

I’ve taken a magnifying glass to it, holding it up in the bright grey daylight. I now realise it says “Advanced Driver” and it has to be off. It’s from those stupid days when industrial designers (which is what I studied in the early ’80s at art college) thought it was such a brilliant idea to merely indent typography into plastic moulding. Not if you’re in your 50s, indoors, in the winter, in the UK. Whole categories of products around the house are unusable due to design idiocy.

@shortbus - Having USB-MIDI hosting on a smaller unit (like iConnectMIDI2+) is a popular request, it's just not something we could make happen in the price range/market needed.

Hey Josh.....but you made it happen with original iconnect midi ?

I own a 2 + . Like many others I'm sure , I need a unit with a smaller footprint than the 4 for portability and playing out and don't need all the bells and whistles the 4 has . But I miss the ability to use a USB controller for performance. As it stands one either has to stump up the same amount again for the Kenton USB or jump to the 4 which is overkill. I would have happily paid extra to have the USB host on the 2+ and imagine others would have done too.

Heh. It's ageism, I tell you. Deliberate. It's pretty sad when you have to get a flashlight in the middle of the day to try read some ferkekting fine print somewhere, isn't it?

  • just keep in mind that if you invest in iconnectmidi4+ that iOS9 and ElCap on a mac both want to be the master clock and icm4 use is effected.
