Latest Loopy Masterpiece Log: A second design pass

Saw this posted on Tumblr.

Love this process of noodling and explanation. I also like any design schmegegge (technical term) that can go forward and back and then forward again. Too much certainty too soon can be a dangerous limitation (oddly).

Also pleased to learn that the Royal Hobart Show is scheduled for the October 22nd, but far more importantly it looks from the calendar that What the Fuck Day in Australia is Saturday, September 5th this year. Good to know.

Think you might consider posting how many hours each week you spend on the X-Box Michael. Just a thought. Don't usually believe in shame-parenting, but in this case... :)

  • So just a week or two ago, animations were the enemy. Now MPE is being redesigned to incorporate more animations? Moving colors, blurred lights, and firework pinwheels blasting out of tracks? Personally, I liked the simplistic design of the original MPE mockups.

I thought the original intent was to create a tool that people could build a career on? Moving colors, blurred lights, and fireworks might be cool for entertaining an audience, but personally, I am not at all interested in any of these distractions while performing a job of being "the entertainer." The concept of providing a functional tool incorporating a logical and efficient workflow to create music with is what MPE was all about, or at least I thought it was safe to assume as much.

@Ringleader I must say that when I was watching the video I too got my inner grumpus on when talk of fiery pinwheels came up. Perhaps this is one of those things that can see both 'audiences' accommodated by having a simple turn this shit off button.

I am not seeing this ending well...

Next week's MPE tumblr site header will look like this. Fallon will debut MPE with Katy Perry performing a duet of "Firework". The left "Firework" costumed stage dancer will be subpar. Ugh.

@Ringleader little harsh there my friend.

We are watching (helping? hopefully?) the getting dressed in public of an app, the designer of which has a) proved himself and b) is -it would appear- sincerely setting himself the task of making something really good. He's the guy whose shit's already been on the Fallon show and if he's half the bloke he appears to be has aspirations beyond that.

He's earned the rope, let's encourage him to use it :)

I thought the left firework being subpar part would be a dead giveaway that I was kidding with that last one, but I guess I will just stick to my day job of being internet complainer extraordinaire.

  • I think it would be quite funny to take the most rambling part of that video and loop it, keep it going for an hour or so and resave. Though I may be the only person who finds the result amusing, and the only one to watch it until the end.

  • @Ringleader that image is pretty fucking funny. To Mike's defense: you're already seeing some of that stuff in Audiobus 2's design and I doubt it'll be Loopy Fireworks Edition. There's always the problem of limited screen real estate and finding a way to communicate the essential bits of information to users while not creating button soup.

JG sends The Monz off to a cupboard with a copy of vidibox and strict instructions etc.

  • I'm sure there will be a 'lights off' switch.

  • lol, oh man...I saw this coming...when Michael started talking about fireworks and pinwheels I detected an ever so slight mischievous smile... muahahaha

    FTW!

  • Catherine Wheels :)

  • MorphWiz watch out

  • Not sure what I think about the background animation stuff but Michael is revealing his enormous brain here with his thoughts about the UI and the flow. Calendar app is a perfect metaphor for a much better pattern for working with arrangements along with live looping. To be honest, something has been bugging me about LME since the initial videos but couldn't articulate it so I didn't voice it. This video sets my inner not-quite-sure to bed. Hasn't nailed it yet but the inklings are leaning in a direction I like.

And yes, tabs are a cop out! The 'you only care about this at the beginning' sort of thoughts are spot on. Keep at it Michael. And thanks for sharing the process. It will be amazing to watch the videos retrospectively after you launch it (for idea developers in general, even more so than Loopy users).

  • Oh... Didn't I mention to you guys that Katy Perry is sponsoring Loopy Masterpiece? Sure I mentioned that one...

    ;-)

Yeah, don't worry too much, guys - this is still just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. There's every possibility the final thing will look nothing like this whatsoever! Some folks love the idea of some neat visuals, some hate it - maybe that's reason enough to find another Thing. But that's the main reason I'm doing this in the open, for this kind of feedback. Keep it coming! Bring the hurt! I can take it!

    @Michael

As a DJ, I really appreciate the visual rhyming of the spinning donuts in Loopy (and to a lesser extent Sparkle). It'd be awesome if that effect could somehow be enhanced across the background of the new app. I'm thinking of how the dots on the sides of Technics 1200 platters "bend" in response to pitching the turntable up or down, and how even the sticker on a 12" can be designed to play on that circular motion. The lights on CDJs do this too. For me, some minimal effect that conveys the looping of a track—and perhaps how that loop can immediately be altered, like water, by changes in pitch or speed—would actually help me react to what I'm composing. (I love Ableton but watching those bars in Session view is super boring...)

  • I think visuals are good too. But it's gotta be useful, not just eye candy. For me, I'd like something like a " master loop" behind everything, pulsing the beat while circling the longest common loop length so you have a quick visual reference to when the loop will be back at "12 o'clock."

  • That sounds good to me too! I agree it definitely has to be actively informative and functional.

  • @Michael
    Interesting following your developments :)
I can see the appeal of animations in a "performance" mode but I agree it has to be functional in a pro app. I was playing with Gestrument last night and it occurred to me a similar control in loopy would be an interesting looping instrument, perhaps when the loop is touched with two fingers. This could control the ability to trigger other different set loops on the screen (or random) as they are touched by shapes and lines extending out from the current master loop. Other patterns represented by animated shapes could be recorded by finger movements and automated to play the loop in certain ways (reverse, slow mo, sliced etc) so it could be like a love-child of Samplr, gestrument and Loopy :)

Samplr style performance capture in each loop would be awesome...!

  • ....So your selected loop could expand to fill the whole screen, then you could play the sample in different ways with different gestures, recording automations represented by animations and when done it would scale back to it's position so you could do similar things to other loops.

    Here's hoping ;)

The only fireworks I want to see when using Loopy MPE are the ones that are coming from my blown mind because it is so awesome.
    image

  • Nailed. It.

  • "Boom, boom, boom. Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon." Aaahhh!!!

  • Come to think of it, I will probably use sequence tracks to automate everything anyways. So if you are going to turn Loopy MPE into a trippy visual experience, why stop at fireworks? Take it into another dimension like a DMT or Ayahuasca experience.
    image

  • How about a dimmer switch? Let people keep the visuals on, off, and anywhere in between.

I for one like customization like this. So yeah, track color customization, dimmer switch for background visuals...

Different styles of background visuals, subtle to chaotic, applicable to each track...

    Different colors for the visuals...

Different colors for the interface in general...

Bring it all on. I suppose just don't get too carried away, and remember that it is an audio app.

  • Yeah, I'm thinking something configurable, too - definitely not quite @Ringleader's visual concept ;-) - but something that ranges from light controls on flat black for those who like it really simple, to something with a little pizzaz (but not too much. Juuuuuuust the right amount of pizzaz).

  • I should say, I like customizable interfaces when it serves a function beyond just aesthetics. So things like organization, tempo, usefulness in dim lighting, etc. If it is integrated into the design as a function of the overall design, might make it easier to come up with something.

As for the options of subtle to chaotic, well the function there would be ambient versus death metal. :)

  • Could also have different track visuals be representative of different instrument sounds: drum, lead, bass, etc.
