Music IO vs Midimux vs MIDI LE (no mention of audio to follow)

The ability to connect IOS and MAC via USB is finally upon us! No more bluetooth, WIFI or expensive hardware required. All in all it should simply be the fastest cheapest and most painless way to go and I'm sure it's brought more than a smile or 2 to the IOS music making community. Being a twisted universe it is that we live in, creation has indeed given us all a twist in the tail by providing not one but two options to choose from at exactly the same time. Both promise audio is also to follow via a secondary app or add on so it really is a conundrum to ponder over so which one shall it be? Being a little wet behind the ears when it comes to the tech side of it I'm hoping the community can help shed some light into this debate by clearing up a few things or enhancing the debate with some meaningful knowledge that'll help make people's decisions easier.
USB communication should be fast enough on both apps for MIDI, therefore latency should be irrelevant with MIDI. So what about audio and latency? Music IO says there app is soundflower and will be around 20ms latency for audio and Midimux uses mirrors and virtual ports on the computer and IOS with no mention of latency so how exactly do the mirrors and virtual ports work and what would be the expected latency using mirrors and virtual ports for audio communication? Also which is likely to be the easiest and least painful experience setting it up for the technically challenged amongst us?
Thanks in advance for all the knowledge and help provided.

  • How about Midi Le.

  • It doesn't offer audio, hence why I never added it. I'm pretty sure they'll all cover the MIDI aspect quite well, it's the audio aspect that this post is aimed at. Sorry for not adding it in doing so have I missed a beat? Is there something in MIdI LE that the others are missing? I'f so I apologize sincerely. If there was a beat missed please force it into the debate as as of yet I have bought neither and I am sure there are more sitting on the fence regarding this. Put it this way the one that proves itself the worthiest for me to part with my Babylonian earned credits will be the one I'll by and I'm sure the same will apply to my fellow brethren with splinters in our arses sat on the fence :)

  • I'm not planning on adding audio in the near future. I've talked to Christian from Midimux a bit and been beta-testing Audiomux over the past few days and it just works great.
Adding Audio to MIDI LE would definitely force me to make it a paid app down the road (judging by the effort this would require).

  • However, thank you very much for MIDI LE (plus usb). Works great for me!
