MiMiX question

I'd like to pick the brains of the iOS gurus here:

I bought MiMiX yesterday with the intention of trying to use it to 'mix' and mute/solo effects apps with Audiobus:
I used audio share to play sounds and set up a few effects in the effects slot, but with MiMiX in the output slot, I'm only seeing one effect in port 1 . I don't know if this is do-able, just asking if anyone else has experience with a similiar scenario ?

Or am I using MiMiX in a way that was un-intended by the developer ?

  • Hi there,
you are not doing anything wrong. MiMiX can only see the app last in the chain bevor it reaches MiMiX Output.
Thats the last app that the Audio stream is grabbed from, therefore it only shows that app, much like a traditional mixer where the last insert effect would pass the Audio stream to the mixer channel.

  • I'm pretty sure I'm not making the most of this app. I had originally presumed that it was more for live use, but have no doubt other folks are using it creatively in AB...

  • @Igneous1 I don't think you can do what you're specifically wanting to do in Audiobus. You can turn effects off and on via the Audiobus menus. You can send several different signal chains to MiMIx in the output of each individual signal chain and then put MiMix in the input slot of another Audiobus chain and put this combined mixed signal through more effects in the Audiobus effect slot. Alternatively, you could use IAA inside a DAW and multiple tracks with effects apps on the individual tracks and then mix together these tracks..

Here's one way I use it.

  • @TedBPhx Thanks. Going to go and mirror that right now....

  • Assume you know by tapping the ThumbJam circled "i" in the input slot you can select different outputs.

  • Hi everyone :)
Igneous1 - if I understand correctly you can't do what you want with Audioshare, but you can with Loopy. By tapping the "i" as TedBPhx says above, you can have many loops from loopy going into as many effect chains as you want (just create as many channels in AB as you need). Then, have MiMix in the outputs & just mute, solo, etc whatever u want. I just tested this with Turnado & Wow & it works very well!
Many thanks, I wish you all the best! :)

  • @Igneous1 - that's the way Audiobus works regarding FX chains. Assuming You have 3 FX apps in one chain: FX1, FX2 and FX3, the output of FX1 will be the input of FX2, the output of FX2 will be the input of FX3 and the output of FX3 will be the output of the whole chain, thus it will be the only input available to the app (any app) inserted in the output slot of Audiobus. Therefore if there is any FX app in the FX chain, the app at the output slot will only see the output of the very last (rightmost) app on the FX chain and it will not see any of the other FX apps nor any of the input app connected to that chain. No matter what app You use in the output slot, being MiMiX or whatever. But as others said, if You use several chains You can see each chain in MiMiX, and if a chain has no FX app in it, MiMiX will see all connected input apps individually. When You add an FX app to the FX slot, Audiobus will aggregate the outputs of all input apps on that chain to one stereo signal and that will be the input of the FX app. No FX apps can use more than one input signal, since Audiobus always aggregates it. Hope it clears it.

  • Many thanks for your replies (and to the developer in particular !)
It seems what I had in mind isn't possible, but I learnt some new things about MiMiX and AB. I just wanted to create a multi-FX chain that I could play the guitar into and turn solo / mute some of the FX. I can do this in Flux and DFX, so it's not the end of the world. I'm sure I'II find some other uses for MiMiX.

  • @TTrGames Well done. Helpful explanation for us slower kids.

  • @Igneous1 do you mean like this where the microphone is input from your guitar?

  • @paulinko

I'I have to try that, so it's more a 'parallel thing' (than a serial thing) - if that makes any sense !

@Paulinko - now this is something i didn't thought of! I supposed if You add system input on one chain You will not be able to add it to another - but in the contrary, You can! Tried it with my small Behringer UCA222 at hand and it works perfectly! Now this way You can use different FXs on the same input signal and blend/mix them or solo any of these! Pure genius. Thanks man.

@Igneous1 You can have more than one effect in a chain but only the combined effect will go into MiMix (e.g. JamUp and a delay effect app going into MiMix). Another effect app can go between MiMIx input (combined effects from multiple chains) and run it through another effects app (a reverb app for example) before sending it on to Audioshare to record. For the guitar apps you can put them in the input slot as they get input from the mic there too.

  • Hi, about to buy this, since I'm looking to do some quick mixes in Audiobus without having to set up Auria and channel it all into a resource hungry DAW. Does it have State saving?

.....am hoping the answer is in the affirmative :)

  • No. Will also reorder inputs. But it is even so worth it.

  • Shame, well hopefully it will get state saving in an update.... Have bought it anyway, very useful little app. :)
