iOS synths with MIDI Out...

  • By the way, I often used NLog MIDI ( the iPhone version) to play .mid files, but with the last update it crashes when trying to load them.

Because I do like to "play" rather than enter things in step by step or by playing the OT chiclet keys. plus, most iOS synths have keyboards or playing surfaces that you can constrain to a particular key which is good for theory challenged people like me.

If this is what you want to do, Jam Maestro is the king at this. MIDI out is extremely easy to use (just load up a midi instrument and select the app/destination), and the playing surface is a lot more practical that a virtual keyboard I find. It also has a lot of music theory built into the playing surface, and is the only app I am aware of that can lock you to not only a particular key but allow you to seamlessly switch to notes in related keys.

There should be some videos that demo this at www.jammaestro.com/videos if you're interested, particularly the last one created by Ryan at iOS MARS.

  • So I could load up JamMaestro, iGrand or Korg Module, and compose/perform a piano part via tablature? Keen!

@JamMaestro, there's seemingly no end to the usefulness of your app. Keep it coming, please :)

  • @eustressor I haven't tested with either of those two apps particularly, but yes you can do precisely that :)
