Stopped at iPad 4
Thank you Apple for the tech and for all the devs for the last five years, it's been an amazing ride and I'm still cruising. I also bought numerous attachments. I upgraded three iPhones and three iPads over the last five years and I held out to upgrade again but you (Apple) have not given me a reason to upgrade nor have you baited me (iPad Pro?). So, your business model has failed to keep taking my money and it will be another two years before I return to do so.
In the meantime, I will be pouring my money into some other proprietary business model to satiate my needs.
That's my rant.

I'll admit- I entered the iOS music production realm due to it's initial cost-effective nature. However, the idea of having to upgrade my iPad every other year or so has me giving serious thought to getting back into more traditional DAW solutions.
The same thoughts here.
@jackfancy if you can find a used/ refurb iPad Air 1 on iOS7 I think you'll be surprised at the improvements. ...ya know, if you are really looking for somewhere to pour your money ;-)
@Thomas I think the funds/ year needed to replace any system is similar. $2000 every 5 years for a macbook pro or $400 every year for an iPad (factoring in sale of old iPad). Same yearly investment.
A mac mini however... that is a more tempting proposition value, especially finding one that has user-replaceable RAM and hard drive. $800 for a system that would probably last me 4+ years... hmmm
Am I understanding this correctly in that you're complaining about not feeling the reason to upgrade your iPad 4 because it's absolutely fine (which it is)?
Buy second hand hardware... I paid $300 for my iPad3, then more recently I paid $300 for my iPad Air. Both ebay auctions. I bought the first iPad new and sold it for $250 when the 4 came out..
I bought my MacBook Pro with 8gb ram i5 15" for $400. Again ebay..
Sold my iphone 3G for $80 then scored an iPhone 4s.. $100 from a friend that upgraded to the iphone 5
Etc..
Not saying it's the best way but I don't need to have stuff in a brand new box without any wear.. Apple stuff is damn expensive, and it's only me using it, I don't buy apple for a status symbol. I buy it for all these great apps, and I bought the macbook to develop apps for ios. If it's just you using it in your studio than who cares if it's preloved
Also there's no harm buying the previous generation to save $$
I got my three about a month after the 4 released,
I got my air after the air2 was released.
The iPad3 I use for samplr and midi controller apps
The air for gadget and the more demanding apps (and a bit of FTL)
I plan on keeping both as permanent fixtures in my setup now as I'm happy with what they do.
I may buy another iPad in 2 or 3 years.. Secondhand
@Buska good plan. And in my experience gadgets are more "fun" when you pay less for them, there is less expectation for them to perform flawlessly, less anxiety over them being dropped/ dunked/ smashed.
I'm just glad most other people like buying new... that means more used stuff for me and you
Wish, there where more alternatives to iOS for phones/tablets. Especially for phones. Perhaps someday android will get low-latency and better apps.
I like getting new stuff, it smells better
But not for long
True, not after I've had my greasy paws on it and spilled beer all over the thing
I'm with @Buska
At least i must say the iPad Air is very robust. I hit it more than one time.... and once i trough it away. Damn.... this thing will not break
But the Air 2 will break ME if the f*cking fruit company doesn't fix the scrollview bug. This or i will throw the iLemon out of the window. Can a group of air 2 user in the US please start a lawsuit about this? Thanks.
Yup, that's it exactly. The iPad 4 is absolutely fine for what I can still do with it. Could I do more? Do I want to do more? Do I have money to spend? Yes, to all.
I'm also a videographer and graphic designer and utilise my iPad to its fullest.
@jackfancy, iPad 4 is still great to use, it's @Crabman, who has my sympathy, that's our future and it's not exactly all roses!
I don't know that I've experienced the scroll bug. are there sites which are more problematic?
The scroll bug mainly affects Auria on iPad Air 2s AFAIK @Paulinko
Love my iPad 4, don't see it as a revolt against Apple that I have not updated yet, no need to. Just updated my laptop after 6 years, didn't see that as a revolt either, what am I missing? That's one of the things I love about Apple is the hardware works for a long time and performs well enough to survive multiple generations of updates.
the Air1 is the obvious pinnacle of the current iPad paradigm- until a pro with bigger screen and more RAM - I will stick with the Air1 -
Gadget as well.
So if one was seeking to upgrade having a choice of the lot. What is general consensus? Air1 says @SetAl.
@ben yes, air 1, on iOS 7
The fact that there's a serious issue like the scrollview issue on newer hardware that has yet to be addressed by Apple makes me glad I've held off on buying anything new. I'm still on an iPad 4.
Truth be told, I've been spending more time making noise with my laptop, a Thinkpad from 2011. I've got SunVox on my iPad, but I have Renoise and SunVox on my Thinkpad, too, and trackers are so much easier to work with when you've got a physical keyboard.
I think if there's no improvement in the line up this year, or the rumoured Pro is hideously expensive, I'll look for a second hand Air 1 - they seem to be the ones to have.
