Not trying to pigeon hole anyone, but I was curious about the makeup of my fellow forumites. If you had to classify yourself, where do you fit? I am a hobbyist.

  • I think I need definitions for choices 1 - 3.

especially, whats the difference between amatuer and hobbyist?

  • still dont know how to play a chord so i'm thinking Amateur (is generous).

  • I was thinking an amateur is one who might play some paid gigs, but it isn't really their livelihood.

  • ok. so hobby = non-paid. amatuer = small pay. Pro = this is my main income.

  • Nailed it.

  • Probably not the best terminology, since an amateur would not be paid, but that's still the intent.

I'm the "other" one! I'm working with pro stuff but beeing an amateur hobbyist. Maybe i would call me more sound designer as musician.... not sure.
But i love creating musical stuff ;)

  • So what "other" are you?

  • Other. I'm always other. (sigh).
Professional acoustic drummer, (Studio only now. Used to be a hired gun for live bands whose drummer's had exploded or some such accident). Live sound engineer for local medium sized gigs. Hobbyist EWI player using iOS synths and PC Garritan sample libraries for soundtrack composition. (No you cannot hear my orchestral pieces, because they really are PIECES if you know what I mean). :)

  • If I had more free time I would probably have leaned toward creating sample libraries for world percussion instruments as I have been fortunate enough to have some cool associates with awesome instruments from around the globe. Sort of an acoustic sound designer. That would be so fun.

considering the median age of forum members, it would be interesting to know how many were pro/semi-pro and are now hobbyists.

  • In our new IOS music world, I would consider Doug a professional. Probably not getting the royalties and tour dollars that Keith Richards gets, but IOS apps don't cost $25,000 each either. (I would be a lazy hobbyist).

  • I've always been a hobbyist, since I'm handicapped by a lack of rhythm and tone deaf. It's an ironic curse given my love of music.

I used to be pro, in the fact I played live in bands most nights of the week and got paid. What I do now with the iPad though I wouldn't really class as music, more an extension of my artistic outpourings/attempts so probably 'other/rubbish'

Please, where is my 'other/rubbish' crown?
